When a super special car like this comes into DK for some preparation for a concours, why not take the time to tell such a fabulous story.... The Ferrari 250LM #6313 - The very car that was NEARLY the last Ferrari to win Le Mans.

This was probably one of the best short documentaries ever made on a Ferrari race car, in fact any race car. This guy somehow packed in an encyclopaedia of accurate race car history across several different makes, models, and personalities in under 15 minutes. He’s a full bloodied enthusiast, from top to toe, and does an awesome job of presenting.

American Ferrari driver, Ed Hugus, ALSO drove our beloved 1965 RACE WINNING #5893 NART 250 LM ( Now ensconed at the Indy race museum...) during the wee hours... Rindt and Gregory had hot dates... Wanting no publicity, he did not go to the podium event... Ed first drove a private 250 TR there in 1958... History! Related to me by my friend, Tony Adamowicz... RIP October, a few years ago... NART driver from 1970 < With Sam, Chuck, and Ron.... I miss Tony terribly.... HERO! I attended the FLA races 1964 -1973 Fell in LOVE with the V-12s! FORZA FERRARI Que bella machina! J.C.

Amazing that I grew up and worked next door to N.A.R.T. in Greenwich Connecticut 🇺🇲 I used to peer into the dark showroom on evening drives looking at these racing cars and engines on display stands. Nicely documented but you forgot a vital and important part of this story. That of Australia’s David McKay and his racing team Scuderia Veloce who also campaigned a 250 LM including his incredible win in a 250 LM at the ‘65 6 hr Le Mans let alone a myriad of hugely important races not only down under but around the world. McKays team supported a raft of highly successful drivers including Chris Amon in wining the Aus and NZ GPS in a Dino 246, right through to the likes of Sir Jack Brabham and even Derek Bell.

I was just about to post exactly this. I photographed David's LM straight off the boat at the 1965 Sydney Motor Show, and followed it through its whole career to its present location (I believe) in the Ralf Lauren collection. I believe it is the winningest 250LM of the 32 cars built, and I have David's two autobiographies (signed), which I'm sure would back up that claim. Speaking to David a year before he died he expressed disappointment that Lauren's restoration had removed all of the 'old girl's' racing patina, and said that had he known that this would be its fate, he never would have sold it. Please, sir, document with the same level of love and passion the story of 'our' 250LM. I'd be happy to provide you access to David's books to assist in this process.

@@paulhall170 Very well said Paul and how nice to have met David. I only knew of him via his and SV’s many exploits. From memory Fangio had a drive (don’t recall if he was racing) David’s LM and ended up crashing it, necessitating a rather extensive rebuild. I recall Sportscar World back in the late 70s or early ‘80s had the story with pictures of this.
@paulhall170
@paulhall170 3 года назад
@@1240enzo Hi David, wonderful shared memories! I think it was Spenser Martin who crashed the car, I can't be sure of the driver, but it was definitely into the Dunlop Bridge over the track at Sandown Park in Melbourne. I was 16 when I photographed the car at the Sydney Motor Show, and at the time David was writing his column "Behind the Wheel" in the Daily Telegraph, so we (my twin brother and myself) wrote him a letter requesting that we be able to see the car. Imagine our surprise when we received a hand-written letter on SV letterhead, stating that he'd love to show us the car but was a bit busy at the moment packing the race team to go to New Zealand for a race series! I still have the letter among my most treasured possessions. We finally got to see the car, and more importantly meet David, in January 1968, at the Tasman Cup meeting at Warwick Farm. David was then managing Chris Amon ("the most naturally-gifted driver ever", he told me later, "but hopeless at managing his money") and also had the fearsome P4 there, later owned and raced by Bill Brown. David had a pronounced speech impediment, which made him shy of personal conversation, and this shyness was often interpreted as rudeness. Nothing could have been further from the truth; he was a charming and engaging conversationalist when he was able to relax. He lived his last years on the family property "Collingwood" at Exeter, in the Southern Highlands, and it was there that I twice met him again and spent some time with him. He was old and quite frail, and his utterly delightful (and very much younger) French wife guarded his time very well, but I was able to get him to sign my copy of the second of his autobiographies, and later, when I purchased a copy of the first, "Behind the wheel", and only a few months before his death, he signed this volume too. He signed the second book "Fond memories of the LM", I swear there was a tear in his eye.
@1240enzo
@1240enzo 3 года назад
@@paulhall170 Hi Paul, ah ok Spenser Martin, I was a bit unclear in my memories of this but yes your right about the incident happening at Sandown. Wow what great memories/experiences you have from your youth. I would have loved to have seen - heard the LM in action. The keepsakes you have, the signed books of David’s are indeed special. As not just a race driver but team owner manager, David certainly would have known so many of the great drivers of the day. It was such a different era for Motorsport. I had no idea of his shyness - speech impediment, and yes I can understand how some might not have appreciated that was all it was. I remember reading David’s articles he wrote on matters that he clearly knew first hand of. I think I might have to see if I can find a copy of his books to read and enjoy. I can only appreciate that how much he would have had such fond memories of the LM. It sure was a successful race car out here and is an object of great beauty. In many ways it’s sad to think that it’s just a part of a large collection of cars owned by a very rich man, never to be driven in anger again on the track. From memory the Sportscar Workd article had pictures of the LM when David had it even driving across Sydney Harbour Bridge !! Imagine being in some ordinary car crossing the bridge and seeing the lithe little red LM coming up behind you and passing. How glorious that would have been.

As impressive as this car is, I personally would prefer to see these treasures left in original condition, vs better then new. Yes, they should be maintained and safe to drive, but the real history of the car is very hard to see when it’s restored to better then it was when it left Maranello.

I have a real suspicion that I met this guy in a motorway services on the M1 last year. I can't be sure, but he was driving a red 275GTB and I went over and chatted to him about it. It's only the second one I've ever seen in the wild (and I'm 53) and I thought how great it was that someone was actually using a £2 million car. What also struck me was how petite the car was. In pictures it looks like a big GT car, but cars have gotten an awful lot bigger these days. Like I say, I can't be sure if it was the same bloke - I was all agog over the 275
