Older video, I know, but I've commented about it before and I'll say it again: There's just something about the 911 GT3 RS that seems like it would be a enjoyable track day car. (I'm a little biased, because on my European vacation, I went to the Nurburgring and the good fortune to take a ride in the 'Ring Taxi with Sabine Schmitz herself, a total sweetheart, and when I told her I was going to be doing a few laps of the 'Ring later on with a rented 911 GT3, she gave me some really helpful tips, like how to take that high speed left hand kink before the almost 180 degree sweeper at the end of the first sector, and where to aim the car to get a good plunge into the carousel and the mini carousel that comes later.) I know both cars are very capable track machines, but it seems like there is more fun to be had with the Porsche, not that I would get out of the Ferrari after a few hot laps without a smile on my face. For the purist, it's definitely gotta be the Porsche. For the occasional track day enthusiast who also wants a car that will be parked near the front of a fancy restaurant by the valet, then it's the 458. Both awesome machines though, as they've shown themselves to be since this video came out.

I take the Ferrari because it's the most famous brand in the planet. I never heard in my country about porsche brand, I only here about ferraris

Porsche and Ferrari really are the two best sports car makers for different reasons. They're also my two favorite sports car makers over all other brands. Your really can't say the 458 is better than the RS nor can you say the RS is better than the 458. They are both amazing for totally different reasons just as Harris says. I would like both in my garage, with a 65 AMG Benz to drive everyday.

I currently drive a Porsche, but the design of the 458 is simply breathtaking and IMHO blows the GT3 out of the water.

I can’t believe Porsche is still the only rear engine manufacturer. Closest thing is the many mid engine configurations from multiple manufacturers.

Just have a look in the minute 4:31 ....... how fast the car goes in the corner and then in the longitudinal acceleration out of the corner....is just amazing, the grip that the car can generate, the precision at the same time, at high speed..... is astonishing !!!

I have been a life long Ferrari fan, but analog supercars are the only way to go. I would happily own either one of these cars, but for my preferred driving style, I'll take the gt3. Kudos to Mr. Harris for another great comparison.

The experts complaining about the lack of a race are probably talking about a dragrace and that doenst even need video proof because the Ferrari has over 100hp more. I havent read about any timed tracktests of the 458 but the GTR RS (450hp) was recently tested by the German car magazine SportAuto which i happen to read and it did a 7.33 around the Nordschleife and a 1.09,06 around the short Hockenheimring. The 430 Scuderia (510hp) tested by the same team did a 7.39 respectively a 1.10,3.

The 'Grand Turismo 4' stat-quoting is just HILARIOUS. JasonLouk is the only one with anything intelligent to say. MX, the Turbo S does the 1/4 mile in 10.8 seconds, how is it slower than the GT3 RS, exactly? Martin, the Noble costs as much and is slower, and the Ultima you have to build yourself. No one with $230k USD disposable income is going to seriously consider building their own. It isn't about being a tenth faster in the 1/4, you'll always be driving the fastest car on the road.

@syxxsyxxsyxx - I've actually driven a few fast cars on a disused airfield, including a BMW M3 with a paddle-shift single-clutch gearbox, and it was nothing like as good as the manual. The Lambo is mid-engined, the Audi RS4 is front-engined, making it entirely different. Are you thinking of the R8? Anyway, I was talking about the Gallardo Balboni, which is RWD, not 4WD.

@jmt6882 it means that they will actually measure datas from the car on the road and circuit. They did it last year but I don't rememer what evo issue was.

The second point about the upper trim 911s and the 458 is it makes much more sense to compare the upcoming 458 Speciale to the GT cars (e.g. GT2, GT3, RS versions). Perhaps comparing the Turbo S is a better comparison. The 911 is a wonderful car, though -- only car that can be supercar AND sports car, IMO. Its build quality is probably better than the 458.

@3droadrunner No, Germany is Ferraris most important export market. And for a fact, the regions where most people buy Ferraris are Bavaria ( Audi, BMW) and especially Baden-Württemberg (Mercedes, Porsche) where i am from.

@gallardogt No , it doesnt need the PDK , its not just about the speed , its about the whole experience and feel of driving a car , standard H style shifter can give you so much more in terms of enjoying behind the wheel than a PDK....

@Leo240sx No the 2-rotor rotary engine has 6 power cycles per revolution. The V8 has 4 power strokes per revolution. So it's a 1.95 L, making 141 hp/L.

@Symbrio to turbo it they would have to lower the compression, but any turbo or superhcraged car requires more maintenacnce then a N/A car. I like gtrs but i dont know anything about the 2011 gtr, have u seen the Lexus LFA its pretty nice and its similar to the 2010 gtr i think

This Porsche GT3 RS needs the PDK geabox but then with a swifter like the WRC rallycars. So just one big shifter for shifting up and down so you can still corner what you want in the right gears what you are used in a GT3. Imagine, this will be a dream come true, just look at the onboards of those WRC rallydrivers. Believe me, this will be thé selling point fort he next GT3!!

I can't understand Ferrari's engine logic in 458. The car has a 4.4 liter engine that produces 562 hp, but under 400lbs of torque. Why can't they step up the displacement to at least 5.0 or 5.5 liters to produce more torque? It's like they're more obsessed with an engine that you can run up to 9000 rpm that makes a great sound. Every time I driven one of these cars you have to run up the rpms up to the stratosphere to get it moving. Still a stunning car.

This is not a comparison. He just reviewed both cars a little bit but did not compare them. Truely great cars with some of the finest technology in the world. Personnaly i'd preffer the porsche,just love the design *_*

When you brake hard, most of the weight of the car is in the front, that mean that there is a lot of pressure between the tow front tyres and the ground, on the oposit there is no so much pressure between the rear tyres and the ground. That's why you can not brake harder in the rear of the car than in the front. When you brake the most of energy is in the front, on the oposit when you want to accelerate the center of gravity moves at the rear that's why high perf car are propulsion or even AWD

@MXdude2793 I believe you are wrong.. The turbo s is half a second quicker to 62mph than the gt3 rs.. also the turbo s is closer to the 458 in terms of power.. And the gt3 rs is in my opinion a track tool despite its friendliness

I like how the 911 GT3 RS is cheaper than a new 458 back then... Now you will never ever be able to afford a used 991 GT3 RS.. But the 458 is waaay waaay cheaper used...

The 458 may be a more capable machine but I would take the GT3 RS over the 458 any day of the week. The GT3 RS is simply hardcore!

@dagnut thats exactly what i thought, considering that every other guy who has driven the 458 was absolutly stunned its at least a possibility. If you like the GT3RS and think a car should be pure you should get an old 911, maybe a 964RS or 911RS, those cars are really pure and hardcore driving machines, comparing them to a GT3RS is like comparing the GT3 to the 458. So there´s not much point in the GT3RS, except you wanna go racing, but the 458 just shows whats possible and therefore wins imao.

Wait, the Ferrari has a drag coefficient of 0.33?! WHAT?! A 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, which is simply a modified version of the least aerodynamic car ever made, has a drag coefficient of 0.28! So you're telling me that even this late in the game, the almighty Italian supercars still have more drag than a Charger with a chunk of fiberglass stuck on the nose? And while we're at it, that nose also made over 1000lbs of downforce. I guess that's what you get when you tell NASA to do your aero.

back in the day when we had the Ferrari 360, the capacity of the 911 was close enough for the cars to be comparable... but now I think the 458 is a little to different to be compared to a 911... they are two of my most favorite cars though

I've been a Porsche man since I first saw that commercial, when I was a kid, of the red 911 winding through the country side, in the late 1970's or early 80's. I haven't liked a Ferrari since the 308 GTS… until now. I'll have one of each thanks, in ash black.

Wer sagt, das die Formel 1 die prestigeträchtigsten Rennliga der Welt ist? In vielen Bereichen der Welt spielt sie eine untergeordnete Rolle. Rallysport und Gruppe C- Wagen, das waren die Fahezuge die in den 60,70 und 80er für Aufsehen sorgten. Der Porsche 917 und 956/62 sind Legendänden. Der Ferrari 512M/S war Anfang der 70er der größte Konkurrent für den Porsche 917. Das widerlegt nochmal das, das Porsche erst in Lemans eingestiegen ist, als Ferrari weg war.

@fifafan1 There's a catch. 458 wouldn't handle forced induction so well. There have been a couple of TT Ferraries in last 15 years (which were N/A original), but most of them are extremly fragile and have to be serviced quite often. Main reason is high compression ratio.Of course there are turboed high compression motors, but are expencive to service and won't handle high boost output. 458 is epic car,in fact,599 GTO and 458 are THE ONLY ferrari cars I would buy.But in 458 vs 2011 GTR, GTR wins

I like Chris Harris been following him for years, all through driver republic days, top reviewer and excellent pilot BUT viewers should know he drove a GT3 RS for Porsche at Nurmburg 24 hours so he might be slightly biased, I haven't driven either so I won't call him out on it..but its possible.

you dont say. its about efficiency on the track, but on the road, you jsut want to feel the car, and you can only with manual gearbox

Porsche 911 has the best chassis ever fitted to sport car. And I don't want Porsche to change the shape of this car, it's perfect. I think Ferrari is for people who don't know about car very much. They saw Ferrari and think it's a good looking car so they love Ferrari, nothing more than that. But if you want engineering balance, engineering perfection go Porsche.

@thestoryteller612 I have, and it's painfully mouth watering. Imagine that slick gated shifter, gleaming in the sunlight coming in to the cabin. The clicks as you're shiting. I can't simply understand why they wouldnt develop a manual for it. I mean, how much can it really cost? They done manuals for more than 50 years...
