That was my thoughts. Much as I love a Ferrari replica - THEY DON'T ... at all. They have a long history of killing replica builders (particularly those that get lots of publicity).
As long as nothing has the Logo or Branding visible on it it wont be illegal copy . If the Horse is visible they can and they will try to sue you or prohibits showing it in videos or carshows
that vid of the lm being driven in the 80's is so so 80's - xmas jumper, slip on shoes... just need a couple of brandy's before you get in the car and a JPS to smoke whilst driving
Would absolutely love to see this happen. Can’t imagine the pride of opening my garage and seeing the 512 and F40 as stable mates! Even if the F40 is a replica. Really hope to see this build come to the channel!! 🤞🤞
Go for it bro you'll never get another chance and you can use the ratas engine and box till you find an engine. wow, imagine that sat next to the boxer. It's a must most of the hard works has been done for you too.
Hey Scott, how's the 512 coming along? An F 40 and a 512 at the same time seems like a long row to hoe. I'm sure you'll finish both but its going to take a lot of time. Looking forward to watching.
You should go for it, building one from stratch will be very satisfying and the result will be a car that can be driven hard. I've seen a local F40 build and it's great to see it come together, some parts aren't that complex to make with today's technology, like cnc routers, pipe benders erc
Sounds brilliant Scott, I love this kind of thing. A GT40 is the next thing up my sleeve. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of hate from the stuffy purists, but I’m behind you 100% can’t wait to see it start coming together
Hey Scott Just bumped into this video, Anyone doubting just how much fun this would be is a fool...If anyone has seen the Jonny Smith video of the 'fake' 250GTO then my point is made. I think you could do it quite efficiently you know enough about the parts to do it well. there are plenty of scabby 328's around that would be perfect donors, and a 360 engine would easily fit the bill for the power train. As long as it stays light and true to the Idea, then you could probably get a few panels done in carbon within budget. If you need someone that is a superb all rounder with fabricating from metal to cloth I have a friend thats a whizz. Just shout. Good Luck
I would never be able to do this there’s so many questions one being, Is it a real Ferrari? I mean subframe and parts and molds from original pieces but at the end of the day, is this worth 100k+ ?
I absolutely agree if you can't afford your dream car but it a possibility to build one for a fraction of the price why not, many kit cars are out there already and most people can't tell the difference.
Someone that lives not far from me, rebuilt a real burnt F40 into a street legal LM replica. It was glorious! It’s since been sold, and I’ve always wondered where it ended up
I like this idea Scott. Think you'll definitely need to finish the BB and the Spyder projects as this f40 will be a monster project.( in time) 100k will be very tight. Unless you use a whole donor car for parts and just replicate the "show parts" like, exterior & Body, wheels, brakes, interior. The engine would definitely have to be turbocharged. You're going to need a genuine f40 for reference & datum points, General dimensions. As long as the body is 100% accurate as in the project you showed, and the interior is as close as original as possible the mechanicals are not so critical (mostly undercover) other than being turbocharged. I'll do my bit and subscribe.
This would pretty much be my dream car too. Even if I could afford to buy an original F40 (and if I could, I would), I'd still love to build something that looked like an original, but used modern components. I know this isn't a realistic (cost) direction for your build, but can you imagine a visually perfect F40 replica with the underpinnings of the F8 Tributo... I can understand the cries of heresy with this whole replica idea; but aren't quite a few of the 250 GTOs that get raced actually replicas? Granted I understand they're replicas where the owner has possession of an original example.
The key to making a replica, I think, is to do it well and generally in the spirit of the original. Replicas have a bad reputation because some are truly terrible, but generally anything with a custom chassis and an engine with similar power is pretty going to be pretty decent (the cost of those meaning its worth making the car look good, even if its not 100% accurate). Ratarossa knows enough about ferraris, and has enough access to ferrari parts, that any build he does will do it justice. I think replicas of super valuable cars are a good thing, as the originals being worth so much means people wont drive them through fear of damage or mileage affecting value. You just have to do what you find fun.
This is exactly the way I'd love to one day build a Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary replica, again like you, even if I could afford the real deal I'd still have a daily driver replica. It would have all modern-day components, Audi 5.2 V10, Graziano transaxle, modern brakes with ABS etc, and most importantly be able to drive it comfortably without having to be only 5'8" tall. Oh, as well as a modern aircon system. Will it ever happen? Not on disability it won't. But damn we can dream huh.
Such an opportunity to build something closer to what the F40 could have been. Could you twin turbo a standard 360 V8? , or squeeze a v12 in maybe. An alternative F40 sounds good. Maybe a roofless rat?
Looks like a wonderful build. I think you might want to take a 348 or a F355 as your base car. The 288 GTO, F40, 348 and F355 all share the same wheelbase. If you alter a 328 chassis to F40 spec and ad a later style engine like a 360, the car can never be road legal in Europe. This may seriously affect the value of the finished car. If you take a complete rolling 348 chassis, ad twin turbos and do the F40 rebody your car will be road legal in Europe too, and may be easier to build. You also get to keep the Ferrari 348 title.
It would be a amazing build. And having watched almost every video you posted. It will look amazing. The 100,000 pound budged will be hard to stay under. But if anyone can do it . It would be you
Scott…. I’m the wrong side of 40 and I’ve never been in an F40, and living just down the road from you in the outskirts of Bracknell I can’t help but say if you EVER get the opportunity to get this up and running, give me a nudge fella! 😉😂
Amazing idea/ project. Only thing may be the fiberglass panels. If you found someone that could make the panels of that molds but in kevlar or carbon fiber would take this f40 tribute to the next level of legitimacy
I'm curious to see where Scott puts all of the cars and parts for the multiple projects. Maybe some Ferraris will be sold? Scott rents a storage facility?
Does the gentleman selling the LM replica still have access to the body moulds? That’s the key question. If so, you might be onto a winner. Would you sacrifice a 308 / 328 as a donor chassis? It’s absolutely do-able.
True. Mind you, I’m sure I saw a bare shell 348/355 on eBay a while back. Starting with a complete car would at least give you everything you’d need to get it running and rolling. My other worry was about availability of glass. The windscreen and that louvered rear canopy in particular. Side windows are relatively simply to get made up in Lexan.
Wonder if you could use something less desirable like a Mondial or 348 ? Bit like some of the less pretty 250s and 330s were rebodied as GTOs. 330s are now going for silly money though so it seems to have stopped.
Definitely agree on the usability of it instead of a genuine one, some nice up to date turbo's and engine management and hopefully sound like the LM in the video 👌
I'm a month late... but, I'm doing essentially this with a 308. Speaking from experience, there's no chance it'll be sub $100k. Unfortunately, that bodywork alone costs a serious portion of that. The parts budget, if all the work was done yourself, would still likely be double the $100k budget.... Maybe more, depending on how true to Ferrari you want it to be, and how much you want to improve it. With that said, it's a SICK project. I considered the same recently... but am terrified by the price barrier. Maybe someday, though.
Yes agreed the price barrier is a big one. Original F40 parts are crazy prices and I would like to keep it factory as possible. Loving the project btw it’s going to be one epic car when you have finished
When your build series begins, please please share the dimensions off the uprights🙏🏽🙏🏽 The technical manual has good information on the chassis, but less so on the suspension.
Personally I don't really approve of recreations or replicas. I think if you lust after the real thing, it's because of the real thing and tribute cars are kind (to me) cheating, diminishing the real thing and are tantamount to wearing a fake Rolex or a toupee, but if it's what you want to do, go for it. I'm sure I'll get flamed to shit for my opinion but there it is. Like I say it's a free country and I'm sure you'll have fun... Although don't you have a 512BBi to be getting on with? :-D
I am interested how much horsepower from that 360 could come out 👀😅 could it go to 1000hp 😏 this project is very cute 😍 and I can’t wait to see next videos ❤️
Am I missing something? The wheelbase of a Ferrari 308/328 is over 4 inches shorter than that of an F40. Wouldn't you need to stretch the 308/328 chassis for the F40 body to fit correctly? Both the Ferrari 348 and the Ferrari 355 have a wheelbase that is .04 of an inch shorter than the F40 (or if you prefer metric, that is exactly 1 millimeter). It seems as though you would be able to use the F40 body panels on one of these without any modification of the chassis (or worst case scenario, extremely minimal modification to the body, which would be unnoticeable).
Im thinking: If you spend yr money buying a car it belongs to you. So, what gives Ferrarri the right to dictate to you ? They should be thanking people for buying their products. I drive Toyotas, Subarus and Nissans. I parked my World Rally Blue Big wing Hawk Scooby next to a Ferrari once at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Guess which car got the most attention.
Hi Scott another great video, I would love to see a F40 with a luxurious interior, one with all the toys, like electric windows, carpets, headlining and all electrics, ie windows, mirrors, air con, but keep the running gear as raw as it should be. I know that doing that is contrary to what the F40 is but it would be a great all rounder and even with the extra weight I’m sure with a modern tuned /built engine that weight would be norhing
I would go ultra modern and drop that body on a Tesla Model S PLaid. I know it’s secralidge doing so but think how much fun that could be. Having a F40 that would even smoke more modern super cars. The looks and the speed combined with future proof driving technology.
i can see you love the f40 scott but a big but it still wont be one as some said down below a bit better than an old mr2........you might get some flack from maranello as well .
@@Ratarossa unless it’s a genuine f40, I don’t think you will ever truly happy. Been such a Ferrari enthusiast that you are don’t strike me as the type to be content with a copy/fake
Where do you find the time? You've got the the 512 and the CS spider builds already. Sure this would be interesting to see, just hope the 512 gets the proper attention. 😉
Could be a real money pit if the bug bites and you try to get really original. Also it could be a real let down after all that work if it doesn't perform well enough to match its looks. Would love to hear it whizzing around Maidenhead though if it was like the one in the clip 👍
True there's always a risk, but stick with the ethos of lightweight everything and a decent engine and setup should perform well. Dont forget i have a slow arse 308 and that still puts a smile on my face with its go kart feel.
16:10 This is exactly why my garage is full of 'tribute' cars (ok, and the purchase prices that I can't afford, of course :-p). The latest is a Porsche 997 GT2 RS 'tribute' based on a turbo. The originals a selling at prices somewhere at 1/2 an F40, but still way too much to thrash on a track day
Few people talked about building a chassis from scratch but as a lot of us know Ferrari are rabid at going after anything they consider a kit. As per Scott's replies above you can get away with rebodying an existing car as it's still an actual Ferrari (just REALLY REALLY modified 😀).
Yes most would say that and i totally get it makes more sense. This would be just about the passion for F40 that I have always wanted one and to make something different would be even cooler and most likely something I will enjoy and drive much more
I had no idea about how much parts overlap there were with other models. Could you make the 360 sound as good as an original F40 engine? That sound was INSANE! Great video. Exciting project concept
Yo be fait the CS exhaust is simply epic, my Ratarossa also sounds great. They all have a unique and amazing slightly individual sound. But the F40 LM build ..... well that has to sound like the clip
F40 replica was available in New Zealand, Lexus V8 powerd. Ask the sultan of Brunei, has 7 of only RH built F40s in varying colours such as black, white, yellow, blue, etc with black leather interior.
Definitely an interesting proposition. Personally I'm more for the 512 project- it's the real deal whereas the 'F40' will always be a Ratarossa type but hey, it should be good to watch which is what these channels are all about!
Go for it Scott! This would be an epic project for sure. I’m not sure you could do it for 100,000 BPS though. You’ll probably be closer to 150,000 BPS, but it’ll be the car you’re dreaming about and completely worth it. I’ll keep my eyes out for parts
