I just love the DC/EJ relationship... its like they have been married for way to long but kinda like each other anyway. And Adrian is my favorite person in the world, so humble and down to earth and yet one of the (if not the biggest) legends of the whole F1
@DaHitch It all depends on how long they play the video before they realize it's old. Took me a few minutes to find out, but it was still a decent and entertaining interview.
Wow! I mean, really wow!!! You were talking about Adrian in the last episode just yesterday and now he's here for a full interview right in the moment everybody is talking about him. You guys deserve a massive applause! 👋👋👋
Not really. There are F1 engineers who were more successful if you divide the number of world championship titles per designed car they were responsible for (i.e. in the position of technical director/chief designer or chief technical officer), which is actually really representative of the quality of the cars they built. Here Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne have more world championship titles per car designed as well as more race wins. So it is by no means so clear or unambiguous if you look closely. Similarly, people like Aldo Costa or James Allison have won more or not much fewer world championship titles in their careers, even if they were not in the position of Technical Director, Chief Designer or CTO at many of them. In addition, it is now known, through Newey's own statement, that Newey was not responsible for the design of the successful RB18/19/20, but only worked on the suspension. Of course Newey is a genius, there's no doubt about that. Unfortunately, however, the media has exaggerated a lot about him, especially in recent years when he was no longer really responsible for the design of the cars. And there are certainly engineers "whose cars" have statistically won more world championship titles per season than Newey's, just as there are other engineers who have also won over 30 world championship titles. Without a doubt, he is one of the best of all time, but if you look closely, there are other engineers who were statistically more successful than him. And ultimately it is the success rate (cars built : world championship titles) that shows "how good" you are. And here Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne actually have a better rate than Newey, which is also shown by the period 1992-2007 (all three were responsible for 2007 cars, which were designed in 2006, when all three were still in a leading position) - here Newey "won" in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, (1994 and 1999 tied as each won a title) and 2005, while in 1995, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 Brawn and Byrne won, which is a 6:8 in favour of the cars built by Brawn and Byrne.
DC's humour is constantly and delightfully dry - had I a hat it would be taken off to him. This channel is a glass of champagne on a hot day in the Med! Bravo!
Obvious that apart from being a brilliant engineer, Adrian Newey is a genuinely nice bloke who is a pleasure to know and work with. As a Ferrari fan, I’d love to see him working at Maranello in the future. However, I could understand him wanting to leave Red Bull and F1 to go off and do something else, even retire. The man has nothing more to prove. My compliments to you Adrian for your superb work over all these years - you’re a living legend!
Salute to Mr Newey he seems to be a class act. Very stoic and studious; a great example to our youth. Any platform that can get him to spend his time with them deserves my subscription. 👍
As a South African fan its makes me extremely excited knowing these gentlemen enjoy south african and especially Capetown and hopefully oneday I'll bump into one of these legends
As much as I want Newey to join Ferrari, and Hamilton to win number 8, did you watch the podcast lol? Newey said joining Ferrari would be like walking out on family (Redbull) the man sounds like he’s retiring
I love your podcast and this might be my favorite episode, yet. I only wish you'd started a few years earlier, so that you could have gotten Murray Walker on. Just thinking about that gives me a warm feeling in my heart and a big smile. Maybe one day you could get Damon and Nigel on and make an episode in Murrays honor. I beliefe everyone would enjoy that very much.
I would love to hear Adrian Newey's comments on Honda. After all, that engine unlocked the RED BULL sledgehammer from 2021. They just do not get the credit they so deserve.
@@GloomGaiGar Mercedes had a 2 year headstart at the beginning of the hybrid era. Honda got involved much later with a greenfield engine which could only be developed in races. No testing. Then McLaren and Honda parted company and RB joined with Honda. The rest is now history.
so great to hear from Mr. Newey. always calm and collected. I hope to speak with him one day. So many questions on how to improve car concepts. I am working on a 1/10 scale RC hypercar right now for a 12-hour race.
Wowww…what a great podcast…genuinely spoken, great stories and great amount of brilliance, experience and passion with these 3 greats. What I also appreciate is that they didn’t push Adrian to reveal what his plans are…they are true friends and give him the space to sort it out for himself…loved the stories…thank you. I hope there will be more of this. ❤
Wow beautiful podcast congratulations, the perfect time to get her out 👏, I hope Adrian comes to Ferrari and helps il Cavallino Rampante back to victory…. Forza Ferrari sempre 🏎️
I don’t usually comment on videos, but this was absolutely fantastic. Three high-level, intelligent, and competitive best friends discussing just great snippets of their lives!
Gosh I just love these friendships. EJ is such a character, which is something I don’t think enough people appreciate. Love to hear anything from newey, I devoured his book last year, might be a quieter figure compared to others but such a great storyteller.
I've always found something quite rock 'n' roll about F1, it's probably why I like it. The story about passing his first interview by having a Ducati fits in with that 😂
The fact he talks about Christian in a good way and still a friend tells me the only reason he left is Marko and Jos. They will no doubt continue to blame Horner completely clueless that we all know what they did.
So it’s clear he wouldn’t be leaving RB were it not for the Horner issue. And it seems clear too that only the excitement of Ferrari could make a switch he didn’t initially want, exciting and motivating.
@@DickTahshon Your "so, it clear" clearly shows you didn't read. You embarrassed yourself big time........ Nobody knows what Newey is going to do next..... wishful thinking, which is ok, but not because of an interview from last year. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
A bit misleading from FFS to not disclose that in the title. People are going to feel mislead. I felt misled clicking on it. I realised it was the replay when I went to the Red Bull chapter and he said “the second year of the new regulations” referring to 2023.
@@frizzyacademic It's disclosed on-screen less than a minute into the video, and the first paragraph of the description is dedicated to explaining it. Perhaps adding "(pre-recorded)" or something to the title could make it more obvious, but otherwise I think it's down to the viewers for not paying attention.
Adrian, your story of the start of your career reminds me of me expecting to get an F1 spot from South Africa and being so disappointed at my response from none other than Ross Brawn saying “ come and be a mechanic”, and I thought, but I’m an Aeronautical Engineer!
18:45 😮😂 am I wrong or is Eddy Jordan giving us (with this in Dec 2023 recorded Podcast) a subtile hint there….Not allowed to tell us directly, but beeing able to release this podcast today?!? That would be a typical Jordan move!😂
Glad you commented. It’s on my mind but don’t understand how ‘podcast release’ works in RU-vid. Can you elaborate? Why the delayed release ? Is it the channel’s decision or ?
@@leechalmers1444 When you post a video to YT you can schedule it to whatever date you want it to go public. As to why, well that's up to each publisher.
Whoever is into F1 lore and reading, read his book, lot of informations. One thing that stood with me is that, had Williams had 2 weeks of development time Ayrton Senna would've been very probably alive as Newey already figured out what the problem with that car was. Stunning piece of read on engineering and vision.
An older pre recorded interview from the end of the 2023 season. Iwatched your last interview where you tiptoed around Adrian's current situation and now here is the most incredibly successful Formula One Engineer and most successful Chief Technical Officer for any F1 Team in the modern era. The guy who worked for Williams, McLaren and Red Bull. To me he is an F1 Immortal. What a coupe, ahhhhhhhh its an old interview, around Christmas, explains a lot.
Eddie Jordan... To me he the best TP!!! But Eddie just a small request: 1)Please take over Alpine 2)Turn them back to Renault 3)Bring the yellow and black back 4)slap the 🪰on the front Would absolutely love to see you back in the paddock like back in the day!! 🏁🏁🏁🏎
I've only just discovered and subscribed to this channel and absolutely love it, I didn't know Eddie was in Capetown, I'm a Londoner but have lived in Capetown for over 40 years now, have been an F1 fan since Jim Clark was winning races for Lotus in the '60s, have done some track time myself at Killarney here in the Cape in the past and am a very keen music fan, lots in common, would be great to get a chance to say hello one day. Quick question for Eddie, I have been a fan and supporter of Radio Caroline since the '60s too and am a regular listener to this day and wonder if you ever had any dealings with the late, great Ronan O'Rahilly?
Newey is the greatest F1 builder. Colin Chapman once held that reputation. It is impossible to be the best forever. Some brilliant, but totally unknown, engineering student is about to finish his PhD dissertation about the mathematics of racecar design. He will become famous soon. Very soon.
38:35 and lets not forget the greatest Irish musician of all time... the man who Jimi Hendrix classes as the greatest guitar player of all time and who thought and inspired Brian May of Queen... and who, when handed a contract from Sony Music (I think) before a gig, stood up and threw it in the bin before going on stage... who bought a guitar in a Cork second hand shop when he was a teen and used it every time he played... the late great Rory Gallagher!
