Ray Ferraro joins the OverDrive guys to give his thoughts on the Mike Babcock story and calls the tactics ludicrous. Plus, the question is asked if this will affect Babcock’s ability to land another coaching job
Props to Nikita Zietsev. Maybe we all shoulda paid more attention to Zietsev's comments in Russia last summer. And it really pissed him off if anyone player kissed up to Babs. There is a reason for him to speak out and you know what, I always felt he could play better. And he barely spoke a lick of English but being labelled a "bad guy"is a universal understanding in the world of hockey. News flash* Mike Babcock was and is a "badguy".
He's a great analyst. TSN is very lucky to have him. I always learn something about hockey at the pro level when I hear him for an extended period of time.
so, this is a bunch of men inside a dressing room. And the message is always to keep it in the room. Hopefully everybody understands that that is the kind of environment that allows for abuse to continue. Young players are afraid to talk. They're afraid of repercussion and so you have the control freaks that take over the room and abuse others. They use their authority to bring harm. Everybody take a long look at this situation and ask yourself why the rape victims don't talk. It's the same psychology only on a different scale. There is a reason why people don't talk after they've been abused and this is a prime example of how teams and their personnel control the agenda with fear and control.
@@709mash Real brave of him after Babcock has been fired and most of the media is pissing on his grave. Real brave of "O Dog". More accurately, he's an opportunist who will draw attention to himself by shitting on people when he CAN. Not when its right.
@@jennyfortuna9696 I completely agree. It seems like he always has to be the center of attention, making the loudest claims, etc. I actually really like listening to McLennan, which is why I sometimes listen to these segments, but I wish the loud mouth in the middle would just shut up sometimes.
I was coached by Benoit Groulx in Gatineau (same type of coach as Babcock) and he literally did the same thing. Made me list players by work ethic and who you liked the most to least and why. Most abusive coach I have ever had.
This is Shanahans mess. Plain and simple. He knew who he was hiring. In fact Shanahan getting getting his position in the maple leaf organization has always been a head scratcher for me.
Indeed people do....unless your coach is the highest paid in history, your son is an adult working towards a multi million dollar contract who's playing in one of the toughest sports on the planet
@@kenryan4224 Babcock knew Mitch's dad wasn't able to be there for that fathers road trip game when it happened. Fuck yeah, he shoulda got dummied for that move. 👊
I was first alarmed by Babcock the way he treated Mark Masters during an interview. Babcock insulted Masters' shoes saying they needed a cleaning and shine ... you could see Mark's face ... upset. People like Babcock are scary ... they get away with it for so long yet in camera are so charming and seemingly clean cut.
I know he's won a cup, but I've always thought Babcock is very incredibly overrated. Hasn't been out of the first round in years. worked well with stacked rosters in Detroit, but give him shit and he can't get it together. I hope he doesn't go into the Hall. Sure he won a couple things but as a person..... leaves a lot to be desired.
Fully agree with you sir. It's one thing when a coach steps in to an organization that has to re-build and start from the bottom. Just imagine stepping in as a coach for team that was built by Scotty Bowman, with so many experienced, hall of fame stars. Yeah, the Ducks did take Coach Babcock to a 7 game finals in "03". But coach Babcock didn't win the Conn Smyth, it was J.S. Giguere. Toronto is a tough market and a true reality check
@@xblackcatx1312 Hello again, missed this, sorry. It means he is calling Babs out in an environment where everyone is. Like I said, before you reach a conclusion, read up on some things the media isn't paying attention to. Start with Mike Commodore' mental stability, as it was he who started this ball rolling. Short version? Every single person calling out Babcock for "abuse" had a beef with him unrelated to "abuse" before this. That's point one. Point two is that many, many respected people in hockey - Yzerman, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Bowman, Zetterberg, etc.. - could have called him out NOW and have their reputations intact. That list is of good people (Shanahan gets a "for the most part"), who have interacted with Babcock closely for DECADES. Not one has piled on. Do the math. Babcock is smartly staying silent to let it blow over. Any response would be twisted against him. He isn't stupid.
@@xblackcatx1312 Agree with you totally on the precedent being set. It would be better if this were handled behind closed doors. As a Wings fan, I can't hate Chelios too much. But he does have a history of mouthing off in not so diplomatic ways when he didn't get his way about something. I recally Gary Bettman briefly obtained personal security because of something Cheli said. Doesn't Yzerman's silence and actions seem odd to you? I mean, if Babcock was a terrible person, Yzerman would have seen it every day. He then goes out and makes the guy Olympic coach TWICE? Who knows whats up, but I smell a rat in these people complaining.
@@111oooo the cynical side of me requires a larger sample size than 2 games before popping champagne bottles and declaring Babcock the isolated problem. Whatever direction the Leafs management goes, the media will uncritically spin it in their favor. A media that has stories from way back, critical of Babcock's character as if it were common knowledge, conveniently leaked right after the leafs fire him, however not sufficient enough concern for the team to hire him in the first place and pay him more than any other NHL coach in history. A vitriolic market indeed.
Mark Saulnier technically there were lots of rumours about players hating babcock throughout his entire coaching career, but whenever people said that nobody would believe them. And for the leafs player, you wouldn’t want to be the one to snitch while he was still there coach for obv reasons. Babcock even admit to it in one of the articles and said that he regretted doing that to marner at the time
Vets have been talking about this for a long time, the spitting chiclets podcast has had numerous guests on telling them horrible stories about him. It's just the fact that Marners story got leaked that this is blowing up on media now
I remember when Miller was on the team, Detroit was playing in Buffalo. Whatever schedule quirks had kept the Miller brothers from playing each other in the nhl, they had about 50 family members there to watch. Baby scratched him, typical move by hi done for no other reason than to say I have the power.
Im sick of hearing how bad Babcock is, yada yada. Totonto knew EXACTLY what they were getting with Babcock. It was Toronto's decision to throw ethics out the window to pursue winning. Everyone in the league knew how Babcock was. Hopefully Toronto is on the right path and have good things ahead. We're pulling for you Toronto. Good Luck
Dan Kelly the “fat guy” Oneil does NOT carry an untarnished name amongst his piers, trust me!! The porn hypocrite spoke more today than he has on the last 40 shows.
If a parent did this to a child we would label it as abusive manipulation. I hope that this will keep Babcock out of coaching forever. Mitch Marner is a class act and I hope that one day he wears the "C" in TO. I am sure he is not the only player that experienced this but I hope he opens the door to other players speaking the truth. Time to end the destructive practice of forcing players to keep these kinds of practices in the locker room.
At first my hope that Babcock would have pointed to the name at the top of the list and said something along the lines of "then you've got to follow that guy's example" which would be a good thing to do. Now I can't help but wonder where would this team be if they had hired Keefe in the off season. Hopefully brighter days ahead.
Babs hurt players like Abdelkader in Detroit w years of slash n bang hockey and leanin' in. Look for the Ferraro video where criticizes Babcock not coaching the team that he has.
Flyin Brian in 2012 he gave Johan Franzen, who has heavy brain damage from playing hockey, a nervous breakdown by screaming at him, that’s not good coaching, that’s just abuse
In fairness though, if you're an in game analyst, you have to have access to the coach to get info. It may not be pleasant, but you have to play nice when you're in his position
The difference that people don’t understand is that Mitch succeeded in spite of babs, not because of him. Mitch is that transcendent of a talent that he’s able to keep producing under a coach that hates him. Keep this mentality OUT OF HOCKEY.
Considering what is going on with Bill Peters, I think that ALL NHL teams will be reluctant to hire Babcock. This is the same as the "me too" movement. People are tired of this kind of bullshit. I was a classroom teacher for 31 years. I made some mistakes very early in my career. But I would never do the kind of crap that these two men are accused of having done. It's a shitty way to live, and when you get more experience, you should realize that there are better ways to treat people. And you WANT to treat them better. It's a win win. Mike made his money. If what they say is true, then he can retire, as I did. Let a new batch of people take over. I think he's through.
I was ready for Babdick to go after the first loss to the Bruins. I couldn't even bring myself to watch any games this season after the second loss to the Bruins. Now that babweiner is gone my interest in the Leafs is back
There are arseholes at the top in every sphere: hockey, corporate world etc. The truth always, always comes out on garbage people. The only solace is that these people have to live with themselves.
Mike Keenan is arguably the most hated NHL coach of all time and 8 NHL teams hired him. At the end of the day, teams are concerned with the bottom line, which is winning games and making money. Babcock is a proven winner and teams will look past any of his coaching tactics as long as the team wins.
glad this is coming out...nice to hear the truth...and no coach deserved this kind of crazy contract...8 years, 50 million..terrible, dreadful contract...not smart at all...keefe will be fine...time to move on, move forward...go get those cups guys...eye on the prize...go leafs go
Jarrod Yeo it’s obviously Babs fault that they failed in game 7 and that Matthews can’t play defence and that they all got overpaid it’s obviously gonna be great now that they can play “loose” and have fun :)
How is it not going to be divisive?? That's the point. It's meant to be divisive and cause issues. He a master of chaos. That's his move to control the team.
Exactly. It's meant to make players scared around him and around each other, thinking it's all in the name of "keeping them on their toes". He got away with it because he has success on his resume, and he has a folksy charm to him in public that makes him a darling to the media.
He'll get a couple more chances. You talk about Mike Keenan. Here's Mike Keenan's career after winning the Cup. He quit the Rangers after winning the Cup because of "contract issues". Joins the Blues in 1994-95, has an okay first year with them going out in round 1 after losing to Vancouver. In 1995-96, they run into the Red Wings and even with Wayne Gretzky, couldn't beat them. The next year, they stunk up to start the year and they fired him because they "needed a change" (Team hated him). The next year, 1997-98, he joins Vancouver, misses the playoffs in the first year, fired after a cold start the next year (Team hated him). Two years later, 2000-01, joins the Bruins, they hate him, miss the playoffs and fire him. The next year, joins the Panthers, has two crummy seasons, he "resigns" after a cold start in year 3. Three years later, 2007-08, joins Calgary, first round exit twice and team hates him, fired. Mike Keenan got several jobs for years until it was proven that he can't win. As long as people think you can win, they'll excuse anything. A coach can do anything because winning is what's really matters. Keenan even won the Gagarin Cup with Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL in his first year there, and the next season after a slow start, they fired him because they fucking hated him.
@@siddiq106 GMs are all about cost-benefit or in this case, wins-benefit. If the team wins a lot of games under a guy, they'll hire him. As long as Babcock can show he's useful to teams (i.e. make the playoffs, win a lot of games), he'll get a job. The next question for Babcock is, will he go to a team that isn't as talent-deep as Toronto? Yes, I know he was a part of the Red Wings during lean years but he won the Cup with Detroit. Hypothetically, what if Babcock joined the Minnesota Wild? A team that has some decent prospects but are on the downturn. If he sucks there and gets fired, teams will be less likely to hire him. As long as a guy succeeds to certain relative degrees, they're fine.
@@de132 That's a good chronology of events. Iron Mike Keenan always had the reputation of being a coach who would not demand of his players any more that he was not prepared to do himself, i.e., he would work harder than anyone. When he got fired in Calgary, one of his players (I forget who) said that he did not work hard enough as coach, and I found that surprising, a damning critique of Iron Mike.
3 years later = I wonder if Jamie still stands behind his defence of - keeping stories in the room. That’s the exact mentality that allowed the Blackhawks sexual assault scandal to occur - unreported. He’s got kids, wonder if his kid is being bullied or harassed = does he stand behind the statement - we need to be careful, about bringing stories outside the room? I’d hope he’d take his defence back and some of his statements back.
I believe the worry is a domino effect of others being under heavy scrutiny and likely fired for being proxy to these tactics for years (directly / indirectly/ knowingly)
@@LuciferMorningstar____ No I get that, but if they were complacent and turned their back to this, why are they being sheltered? If the attitude is to sweep stuff like this under the rug, it will never change.
And those coaches are proboly terrible at their jobs, surprised marner would even want to play their after that 4th overall pick superstar could go anywhere he wanted when he's eligible
Colby Burgesd The best coaches toe the line without crossing it. It does take some extreme measures sometimes- Scotty Bowman threatened time trade Steve Yzerman out of Detroit early on after benching him to prove a point. However management squashed it and eventually everyone was on the same page. There’s a bit of that “break them down to build them up” mentality that is needed sometimes similar to military boot camp. However, a good coach also knows when to stop usually and who doesn’t need that kind of treatment. There’s a lot of issues/questions around Babcock. He was never a players coach (likeable), he would come into underperforming but talented teams and make them win. Very similar to Bowman in that regard. However I also think he’s incapable of adapting his mindset to the modern game at present.
No, it didn't come out until now. But if he's winning and getting the job done, then the sports "journalists" don't care. It's when the overpaid Leafs starting sucking, then they started to care.
Paulafan5 so what’s the deal with mike Babcock? He was abusive? Bad guy? I thought he was a well respected coach and one of the most winningest coaches?
The story should come out! Whenever it needs to come out. But they must come out. In addition lets not tell the young people that it should stay in the dressing room. This is mental abuse and who know what other abusive things have had to be dealt with.
Best move Dubas has made so far. Should of made it last year. Hopefully Leafs make the playoffs now. Babcock has a nice resume but his time was up because of his over the top narcissistic attitude.
Lets turn the spotlight here. Shanahan was the driving force bringing him to Toronto, he should be fired as well because he knew full well the shit going on.
For best on best international hockey, Canada called Babcock 3 times, not twice. 2010 & 2014 Olympics and 2016 World Cup of Hockey. 5 times if you include the World Juniors and IIHF World Championships.
The only problem I have is that Kyle Dubas then Brendan Shanahan are, in typical Toronto fashion, one step closer to getting fired. Steve the dbag Simmons already has that article written and saved.
I’ve always observed that Ray Ferraro is a knowledgeable hockey person, who played at a HIGH LEVEL and he is a terrific commentator. We can be sure that if SO MUCH NEGATIVITY comes out about Babcock from so many players, I can’t imagine that he’s a BAD GUY. However, he didn’t just assume this coaching position. I’m wondering about Shanahan’s decision making process. MLSE DROPS (and continues to) the ball by staffing up with people who are CONTRARY. WTF is going on within MLSE ?
The funniest part of this is that this scheme actually worked. Kadri had the best 2 seasons of his life after Marner listed him last on his list of work ethic. Like it or not....Babcock used Marner to light a fire under Kadri.
I'm wondering if Ray asked his son if Babs pulled any shit with him because Ray would take Babcock behind the woodshed if he did. You don't mess with a former NHLer's son.
If you're in Mitch Marner's shoes, you should confront him and say "...listen, you don't have to scratch me because i'll scratch myself." You either resolve it then & there and find positive resolution. Or wait 3 years when it inevitably resurfaces, which is much worse. Take back your power and find the peace. That is just uncalled for.
He inherited the remnants of the Red Wings dynasty, which was a collection of good veterans, that crap probably works with them but not on a young team like the leafs
Tom Crouchman he made Marner make a list of the hardest workers in the locker room and who he liked/disliked, he then showed it around and caused players to turn on him, also exaggerating about it, causing Marner to break down, in his rookie season
Phil DH it starts off in the middle of the conversation. He had the locker room turn on Marner and spread rumors about what he said like a middle school girl. It just wasn’t true and Mitch has a breakdown because of it. Caused Johan Franzen to have a nervous breakdown in Detroit. Ruined Mike Commodore etc, etc
After this story, it's no wonder Mitch's negotiation was so drawn out. And then there's the whole naming the captain. Would Matthews be the captain of they had just fired Babcock after another disappointing loss to Boston
Yeah, like winning the lottery: Coming in following an unbelievably stacked team built by Scotty Bowman! My chain-smoking, drunk 90% of the time Atom's coach from the 1970s could have coached that team & won the cup.
