I have a vague memory of bio gas dome being built at my home using similar method . That was some 20 years ago. I plan to build a shallower and larger diameter water tank for keeping fish as a hobby. I was looking for a how to video on this subject to refresh my memory and learn more about this method of tank construction. That is how I came across this one. This video is very informative and covers the subject in a detailed fashion. Thank You for your effort.

Thank you so much for posting. I live in the united states but I am wanting to create a water catchment system so that I do not have to pay for or depend on municipal water systems. This was a very comprehensive , well spoken, very informative, and well thought out video. You have answered my questions of being able to build my own cistern and how to Seal it. Thank you again. All love and God Bless

Charlie Chong - Cement dust is one thing, cured concrete is something else. Totally different and inert in most cases. Analogy can be made for example between fresh paint or cured paint. The first can be full of nasty vapors from thinners, etc. in it's dry form you use it on tables chairs, etc. where you can have direct contact. Hope it helps. :-)

Awesome that you've done this for these people. May I suggest using metal fittings for a remote village that has no home depot. Pvc is total poo. Those fittings will be destroyed within year or so, that ball valve is not serviceable if it needs maintenance.

Rebar and mesh can be substituted with bamboo, it's remarkably resilient. Thomas Edison had a bamboo reinforces concrete pool that held water for 90 years
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 7 лет назад
Can you make a hope out of bamboo? With real thin strips? That would seem like a lotta lotta work. The rebar really doesn't contribute to the strength of the structure. It just helps to create the form. The strength comes from the tensile hoop strength of the mesh.

Right...they drink cement-washed water...pretty toxic. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15448758

@johnlee7085 7 лет назад
The cement is inert once cured. Not toxic at all. There are cement lined pipes in some municipal water systems, and not a problem. There are regulations in many places about rain water harvesting, especially for potable use. It can be very onerous if allowed at all, though not necessary scientifically. Just political.
@withwingsaseagleeyes
@withwingsaseagleeyes 7 лет назад
+Charlie Chong, That is talking about Cement Dust. Where would this Cement dust be after the cement is cured? Added: "Cement industry is involved in the development of structure of this advanced and modern world but generates dust during its production" So after construction is done, rinse the dust away, no dust any more unless someone grinds the hard cement.

@dantemalit1744
@dantemalit1744 Год назад
yes, they would rust if theyre not galvanized then exposed to oxygen
@buzzwerd8093
@buzzwerd8093 8 лет назад
Some time see if a couple of layers of welded-wire metal fence can do for the rebar. Just for kicks, try a model with local fibers weaved into a wire basket frame and concrete that up. If it works, it will be cheaper than all metal.
@buzzwerd8093
@buzzwerd8093 8 лет назад
***** With fibercrete they mix fibers with concrete, usually fiberglass. Anything you can make a strong lasting rope out of should do for fiber. Chop into short pieces and mix. Look up papercrete on RU-vid, so many lbs paper ground into water mixed with less weight of concrete makes papercrete. Stronger fibers should make stronger results?
@buzzwerd8093
@buzzwerd8093 8 лет назад
***** You could weave thin bamboo or splits into a thick bamboo frame and fill with concrete or small-fiber fibercrete. Suppose you made a boat hull and filled the weave with canned foam instead? It would need a stronger skin at the least.

Looks like a wonderful idea for people in remote areas without access to clean water but wouldn't the water be a little toxic to drink if the inside of this tank isn't lined with a protective material?
@johnlee7085
@johnlee7085 7 лет назад
Once the concrete cures (mostly in 7 days, compete in 28 days) the material is inert unless you introduce some really strong acids, which would be far more problem than the concrete that is being degraded. In fact, some pipes in municipal water systems are cement lined and not a problem.

Are there any health risks using the water stored in the cement tanks?
@crpth1
@crpth1 5 лет назад
There´s always risk of water contamination in any kind of tank. Reason why regular testing and filtering. Is a wise, or at least advisable condition prior to use. Cement tanks are neither better or worse than other types. Although have one feature that can be an advantage. They keep the water cooler, than a comparable plastic/metal tank. ;-)
