That right diagram is a perfect drawing of Skull Rapid.

The right rapid was based on Double Drop on the Selway. This is what a lot of Class IV Rapids look like.

First comment? Heck yeah! Thanks for the video Zack, great info! Your videos are a big part of my family's journey from flatwater floaters to class 2 boaters.

This video is perfectly timed! I just came off my first multiday raft trip where I "discovered" some of what you covered here through trial and error. I started out trying to use primarily upstream ferries in the class 2 and 3 rapids, but by day 3 I was using way more downstream ferries or pulling 90º to the current. For the mellow stuff, I found that I didn't need to slow things down with the upstream ferry if I set up earlier, and pulling against the current is hard work. I also discovered the limitations of pushing; It only took 1 or 2 times where I tried to push to avoid a rock, realized last minute that I wasn't going to make the move in time and had to resort to a last-second pivot to avoid hitting it to start doing away more pulling! Your video gives additional context which is super helpful, especially adding in the content about which methods are best for piercing laterals rather than getting funneled by them. Keep making videos, love the content!

Pulling away from the line towards danger is freaking genius. Going over 90 degrees is great for a few reasons. I feel that theses types of moves are made in the moments you’re pulling and over 90. Its all about the angles. Less about power input. Also really enjoy the spin! Once you’re aware that you’re going to make the move, the bow is (usually) in faster water than the stern. The river will bring the bow around nicely for a smooth line.

I’ve been using the line to danger and setting up above a rapid at 90 degrees with my friends getting into rafting this summer. So much better ideas than simply pull away from danger that I was initially taught with.

I have some friends who recently bought a raft and know nothing about it. I am sending them here as I don't have time to teach them some of my 30+ years of rafting and guiding. What I have watched so far of you is spot on.

Another great video. The instructional part was particularly good. "Danger Line" is great for teaching. The downstream ferry has been my favorite move this summer! Can't wait to try some class 4 water.

Thank you! I didn't understand what lateral waves were, so your blossom bar video makes more sense now.

2 videos, 1 day....I must be living right I like the way you said "the line". I think that's the key, read the water, follow the line with your eyes, and angle away from the line leading to the hazard. Not always directly from the hazard.

Any chance you could put together a video on basic boat setup and outfitting for day trips? Safety gear. What lines (bow, stern, flip, etc.) need to be rigged. Etc. Basically, what do you need to be safe above the boat, frame, and oars. Coming fro the fishing world, some of us are a little behind on this stuff when transitioning to heavier whitewater.

I like how you are trying to turn rafters into kayakers with these techniques. ;) As a kayaker I was always thinking how to catch eddies to make a cleaner run of a rapid, but that can be harder with a gear boat raft.
@GearGarageTV

It's harder with a gear boat but totally doable
