The rate setting needed can vary with your spreader as well as your gait. At a 6 setting on my Scotts, I would run out of product before covering the prescribed area footage, so I use a 4 setting, and MY coverage is spot on. As they say, "Your mileage may vary". Also, my motto is - Get some weed control going before first fert application, so we don't "Feed The Weeds'".
Great information. Thanks for educating us on Centipede Grass. I Live in SC and have centipede grass for a new house bought in Feb 2024. So far I have been only watering the grass as you had recommended about 1-2" per week. Did my soil testing and found out that my soil is low on Phosphorus, Potassium, magnesium & Calcium, PH is good. Planning to do following, let me know if I am in right direction 1. Put Sta - Green 16-0-10 as per your instructions in two phases and also use Sta-Green lawn Multi nutrients to improve the soil health. 2. I havent mowed my grass yet, there are some brown patches and some weeds around, but not so bad. The grass is still very much green but uneven. 3. When should I use the Preemergent and weed killer? Any particular product you would recommend? What should I start with now and how should I go about in coming months. Thanks!
Sounds like a good plan. Be careful with overwatering it will promote fungus this time of year. Also may want to do an insecticide app. For weeds I recommend Celsius or Fertilome Weed Free Zone. Preemergent recommended is Gallery. See latest video for reasons why. Thanks for watching

Just put this stuff down at your recommended rate after a bag of humichar two weeks ago. It honestly felt like I should be putting more down but that will wait a couple of months. At least now I dont have to buy multiple bags this year for my lawn!
Can you tell me what should I do to kill crab grass? My lawn is full of them plus I have some bare spots. I’ve done a liquid detach about a month ago and I do see some new light green stolons spreading. My yard is a mess and I don’t like it. I wish I could add a picture
I think the best product to kill crabgrass in a centipede lawn is Celsius. It’s expensive up front but lasts a long time. For the bare spots just keep mowing, don’t use pre emergent, and keep the areas well irrigated
Almost 2 weeks since i applied the fertilizer. I I did a setting of 4 on the spreader. Its looking really nice.. I just noticed Some weeds coming out now. What is the next step and when? Thank you for your vids and knowledge, very helpful. Grass It's been cut at 21/2 inches.

Looking for your opinion: i used this fertilizer last year once, and it worked well. I have to reseed some bare spots and plan to used this organic fertilizer at the same time. I followed your advice with the half setting last year. Should i set the setting to 2 instead of 3 on my edge guard or keep the 3 and fertilize again in August? I only fertilized once in may last year. Also when should i hit the weeds with atrizine after seeding?
Fertilizing twice at that low rate won’t hurt anything. With seeding you may need a bit of Phosphorus so the seed germinates well. Maybe look at something with a low P number like 7-1-2 or 5-4-0 for the seeded areas but it may not matter.
Since atrazine has preemergent properties it would affect the seeds from germinating. I would stay away from atrazine for at least 2-3 months. Maybe you could just use a post emergent that wouldn’t hurt the seeding germination process
Good video. For some reason, Lowe's does not market that StaGreen product in Florida. I need to call the gardening manager of the store to find out why.
The immediate results looked fantastic but as a result I had an infestation of spittle bugs which suck the nutrients out of the grass and cause dead/pale spots. They are attracted to the excess nitrogen. Just another example of what makes centipede so tricky.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Now if you said you were getting an abundance of disease pressures from bombing nitrogen I could get behind that statement. To directly correlate spittle bugs and the use of high nitrogen, leading to attracting them that’s a bit of stretch. 🤔
Thanks, The Fertilome is a good product - it has iron and micronutrients- however its form of Potassium is a chloride Muriate of Potash which is a harsher form of K. I prefer the StaGreen because it has SOP sulfate of potash and kelp meal/Humic as well.
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Thank you. This is my first time fertilizing my lawn since I purchased my house this past December. I already cut my Centipede grass twice at 2 1/2 inches, since my lawn is bumpy and I'm afraid that cutting it 2 inches would hit the ground with the blade in certain places. So far, the lawn looks good, and I have been watering it 2 to 3 times a week depending on the weather here in South Carolina. I will set the Scotts spreader at 4 and not at 6 as recommended. Thank you for your advice.
I have to disagree with this theory. You also get crappy coverage not using the bag rate, based on the granual size. Now if you had smaller particles then ok go that route. Bigger particles and sparse coverage is not the best thing you can do for the lawn? Youre only getting fertilizer placed in small areas that probably dont all match up. A low nitrogen program is not a bad thing but if youre not getting equal coverage across the board, don't do it. Just my 2 cents.
If you want to go with a half bag rate, get something with a lower nitrogen/potassium rating and smaller particles size, then when you reduce the bag rate you still get sufficient coverage.
Fair enough, this is kind of a test to see how it responds with the primary goal of keeping N in the right range no matter which fertilizer one chooses.
It's a good test but I would still recommend making sure you have adequate particle coverage. Milo and PGF Complete are great options to still give great coverage while cutting the application in half. Now, I live in the Florida Panhandle where our soils are naturally phosphorus deficient so I need what I can get.
That bag should cover 8,000 square ft. at 1 lb. N per 1000. Especially if it’s slow release. Not the recommended 5,000 square ft. that the bag recommended.
