Centipede grass has it's own personality. In this video I provide centipede lawn care tips for topics such as weed control, fertilizer and mowing. Hopefully this will help you put together a great centipede lawn care program for you lawn. There are a few mistakes that people commonly make with this type of grass. Over fertilizing is one mistake. I also address a proper mowing height and frequency. Weed control can be tricky, especially during spring transition. Learn these tips and more in this video.

Have to agree. I'm one of those no treat guys. Cut it, feed it and let it do it's thing. I love centipede and the lawn it makes. I think it's the easiest most care free lawn you can have. It chokes out just about anything and always looks great. Just enough weeds left in for the bunny's to come out and pick through in the evenings. :)

I just moved into a subdivision in lower Alabama. The home builders put in centipede grass. This was very helpful! I want to have mine lawn as green as possible. Thanks for the tips!

@@TheAustinMarcus unfortunately, after 8 months of moving in to my new house, my previous job cut our department's pay severely. So the lawn had to take a back seat for the time being so I can make my mortgage payments without losing my house. As of right now, it is getting better but is going to take some time.

How do you kill spurge on a centipede lawn. I heard bad things about atrazine being that it may be an endocrine disruptor.

Hi Jason, you call it field matter weed and I have some that look very close and my iPhone info app thinks it's broadleaf carpet grass. Maybe it's related or the same. I live in North Carolina and this weed grows mostly in our swale where it's a little more moist than our centipede lawn which now in May is very green. Can I use change-up to just kill the broadleaf carpet?

1.5 inches on exmark isn't really 1.5... do you go off of the deck measurement or do you just know the true height for your decks?

You’ve helped me quite a bit mostly with chemical control issues and turned me on to the product podium a few years back, which is really really been awesome during the growing season. I’ve got a backyard putting green Bermuda grass in south Florida , selling my home and moving to North Florida, where I have found centipede grass growing pretty much wildly without any chemical control and thriving quite well in areas under trees and places you would not expect grass to grow well. It’s basically in the middle of a forest. I was going to put down Bermuda grass here in the new location in north Florida but after seeing the centipede grass growing pretty much wildly without any maintenance fertilizer, chemical control, or anything it makes me change my mind now I am definitely leaning more towards the centipede grass, for the obvious reasons

Which harrells fertilizer do you use? And would you be willing to explain best fertilizers for centipede or do a dedicated video for it? I’ve read ammonium sulfate is best for centipede but I’ve also read it’s much easier to burn the lawn with it. Would like some guidance before frying my lawn. Thanks!

Steve, the 18-1-9 Harrell's Centipede blend Jason mentions is only about 25% Ammonium sulfate of the total N and the rest is slow release in nature. I think large amounts of fast release N from ammonium sulfate in hot weather is where the "burn" trouble lies. I suggest getting a blend that is high in slow release percentage to spoon feed the Centipede. Don't exceed 2 lbs. /1000 sq. ft./year of actual nitrogen. Hope that helps. So do a pre emergent or atrazine which i believe is the same thing ? And this is to be done typically between Jan/Feb , Can you do it during transition time ? then once the grass is all green you can get the fertilizer ?

We’ve had a huge Dallis Grass problem come into our centipede lawn. I’m using Celsius WG to spot treat but wondering if you have any other recommendations. Should I start overseeding with Bermuda and make the transition to another grass? Thanks for any help

Celsius and certainty is probably the best combination I know for that situation. I would not overseed with bermuda, unless you want to completely kill your centipede first. Dallisgrass is difficult to kill. It may take several applications

I just purchased my first house 2 years ago in Florida and I’ve got what you would call yard salad. 3-4 different types of grass and just about every weed you can think of. All I’ve done the last 2 years is now it at 1.5 inches (at least once a week but I try for 2, especially in the summer) and put sunniland weed and feed on in the fall and spring. I now have huge areas of centipede but still all the different grass and weeds. How can I kill the other grass without hurting the centipede? Between the atrazine and maybe adding in a spot treat post emergent I could probably get on top of the weeds until the centipede starts to take over, it’s the other grass I’m not sure about

Try spreading centipede seed. Also any centipede clippings you have. Dump the clippings over bare spots. It will help fill in the spots & maintain the moisture for the seeds the grass naturally produces. My grass is now encroaching in my neighbors yard & he asked me to spread the clippings in his yard to help it spread. It's working nicely !

Eastern NC, driest April on record, still waiting to drop fertilizer, just following the neighbors, new home owner. Hoping to drop some fertilizer soon, no where near green up, i don’t even know the window for atrazine, any tips? Got some sandy spots where I want grass, thanks in advance!

I currently have quackgrass taking over my lawn in the front and sides. I live in NC and want to use a treatment now. What treatment can I use now for the quackgrass; I do have centerpede grass. Would the atrazine be a safe treatment to use? Thanks.

You can use atrazine on centipede although I doubt it will kill quackgrass. I'm not familiar with that weed.

Quack grass is a night mare. I was infested with it last year I live in South Georgia. Number 1 I cut every few days very low. number 2 I used Atrazine and it did killl some and knock some back. then the Tenancy I used a month later really knocked it back but then the rest of the summer I spot treated it with Tenacy and I had on 3 small spots this year

Hey Jason I have a weed that I am not sure about or how to treat I think it’s some type of wild rose. It has purple/red leaves with a thorny stem it is scattered in small patches in the lawn. Any ideas?

Jason, through the summer my biggest weed issue is nutsedge? I think that's what it's called it has these little balls in groups. It has shown up in my good lawn and on the slopes and bottom of my swale. What can be done? Thanks

Sounds like kyllinga. I use products with dismiss to help with kyllinga. Prosedge works good for nutsedge

No. Only use atrazine on Centipede and St Augustine grasses. It will definitely stunt your Bermuda

@@lawncarelife thanks for your quick reply. I am thinking of carefully attempting to spot spray them with a quinclorac-24d mixture. The violets are not completely out of control yet. I would like to avoid that situation. Centipede grass is frustrating. Any suggestions?

@@lawncarelife In case, if you were wondering, it appears that celsius did work on the wild violets. I did two applications, at max rate, two weeks apart. Once in the last week of August and once in the second week of September. Hopefully, it has killed it to the roots and wont come up next summer.

Jason, Is there any truth to the fact that centipede lawns last about 16 years? After 18 years, our lawn that always looked great now shows signs of dying. Bare spots all over etc.

My centipede is going on thirty five years old and still doing fine. Late in the summer I stop mowing and let it do some reseeding before the first frost.

@@Blackash77I've been reseeding my patchy bald lawn with centipede seeds and keeps failing. They say to spread the seeds when it's warm in summer and to keep it moist at all times until it germinates....Keeps failing😢...So you're saying that you just leave the seeds drop in late summer and it'll come back (grow) without any effort❓😯

Yes. Once it was established my stand hasn't needed any additional help. I'm in SE Oklahoma and we normally have hot and dry Julys and Augusts. Some years I will go from July to September without mowing. In bad drought years the centipede will go dormant until a decent rain and I will mow again in the fall. It will make plenty of seed if you will allow it.@@sangueguerriero9538
