Lately I have had a lot of people asking me what I use to fertilize my garden, and while I’m always happy to share that information, I also want people to understand why and how I use this organic fertilizer, and also learn how to find the best fertilizer for your garden.
This video is not sponsored, but I do love thus fertilizer so here is a link to where you might be able to find it:

Super appreciative of the hard work that goes into this content - and not just the garden, though that's tough work as well, I'm sure! There's a tremendous amount of care in each production, from camera angle and mic placement, to editing and minding the Sacramento sun. Not only that, but I can tell that you've thought through what you're going to say... it's not just rambling disconnected thoughts. It makes for much clearer instructions and a jam-packed session of information to digest. There's easily 30+ min of content in this clip for a lot of other creators, and those of us looking to improve our gardening are appreciative to get so much information in half the time. Bravo, Kyle!

Hey Matthew, thank you so much for taking the time to share this detailed feedback and for your recognition and appreciation of the work I put into creating these videos. We’ve all watched plenty of those 30 minute videos that offer 5-10 minutes of valuable information, so when I created this channel I wanted to be sure the videos I create are succinct and quality. As a new creator I’m still learning a lot and hopefully improving a bit with each video. Thank you again for your encouraging words, they mean a lot! -Kyle

Here in Rancho the soil is heavy with river rock which is from the days of river dredging for gold. We have built very tall raised beds and fill with native soil on the very bottom. The top 6 inches to 1 foot with Mel Bartholomew's soil mixture. 1/3 each of Perlite, organic compost and peat. It has been a great medium.

Hiya, just stumbled upon you and your video and both are fantastic! I, like every other person on the planet, have taken up the hobby of gardening and didn't know squat when I started. But now thanks to generous souls like you who share knowledge I feel like I've taken some summer coursework at my local community college! I see my mistake now of using a fertilizer too high in nitrogen. 😣. The Hubs keeps NOT buying tomatoes at the store bc he knows I'm growing them but I seriously can only offer the family about 1 per week. It's so bad! 🤣 No salsa in weeks... 2021 will be better. In many ways. 🍀🤞 Keep in doing what you do! Thanks for the help!

Mary Madigan Hi, thank you so much! I love that so many people have taken up gardening this summer! It’s definitely a Learning process and like anything else your skills will improve every year! My first experience growing tomato plants was a complete failure but that was about 17 years ago and I’m still learning so much all the time. We are all very fortunate to have many good resources to learn from on today’s internet.

You do an awesome job explaining things! I've got some experience in the garden but there's always something new to learn, (like tomatillos)! A beginner must find your help priceless. In Canada I use Gaia Green organic fertilizers. GG 4/4/4 All Purpose and GG 2/4/8 Power Bloom will cover you for the season. A bit of extra bone meal for tomato and peppers when transplanting seedlings. Some worm castings. Sea Boost Kelp liquid. Sheep manure compost all around. A lot of our 'tips and tricks' are very similar! Beautiful wormlings @ 7:35!

Just recently found your videos, and glad I did! New to gardening here, and am always scouring Internet for information. Something I’ve been learning a lot about by experience... are pests. I’d love a future video from you about how you deal with ALL the pests and still manage to keep your plants thriving. I’m in central Texas, so I think we have similar weather and pests. Specifically, I’ve battled SVB this summer, loopers, and am currently in the middle of another wave of some type of caterpillars, and aphids. I’ve tried made-at-home sprays, and just tired some bt for the worms. We’ll see how that fares. I’m curious to know, with so many plants to care for, if you’ve ever lost any to pests, and what you do to prevent

Heading to the nursery to get what I need. I have been using that fertilizer from Miracle grow, that attaches to your hose. It works great…… for growing leaves but not fruits and vegetables! Apparently it is high in nitrogen!

Hi Kyle! Great Channel! I live in SD and your channel is perfect for me. I manage a large elementary school garden and my own home garden (all raised beds) I'm looking to covert my front yard from lawn to garden. How do you handle foreign tree and shrub roots? My beds always get overrun by foreign tree and plant roots. I feel like adding nutrients to the soil just encourages foreign plant roots to invade my beds and I end up just feeding the neighboring plants. The number of amendments added to the soil to feed the vegetable plants can be costly. I don't have a youtube channel to subsidize the costs of my gardens. I notice you have a large hedge and two large trees on the other side of the fence. How do you feel about the amount/costs of adding amendments to your soil and the roots of invading plants in your garden? Thanks! Great Work!!

Thank you for that, I've been using organic fertilizer for the first time this year and I think I'm using one with too much nitrogen, which like you said was good early in the season, but now I think I need more calcium as my tomatoes are showing signs of stress and one plant is getting some blossom end rot. Also my cucumbers did absolutely nothing this year and I've never had issues growing those before. I'm going to up the calcium in my garden and see how my succession crops do. I'm in Michigan zone 5.
@urbanfarmstead
@urbanfarmstead 3 года назад
Debbie Bell it’s my pleasure! That’s great that you’re switching to organics! There there are certainly sone things to consider when switching from chemicals to organics. One is that the concentrations of nutrients are usually smaller, and the other is that the results/reactions will be slower and less pronounced. Over all the results are better but not seeing that instant gratification that we see with chemicals can often be discouraging. And if we use the same amounts as we were using with chemicals, we’re often not apply enough. It’s a learning process but you’ll get there and you plants/soil will love you for it! Happy gardening!

Thank so much for your videos! I'm here in Sacramento also just started gardening in June with grow bags. Now I'm getting into ground planting. Curios as to what kind of woodchips your using. I heard some woodchips can take nutrients from your plant. Not sure if thats true. Thanks again. Always looking forward to the videos. On side note thanks for your service in the community with fire season. Be careful out there. Prayers to all of the fire fighters!
@urbanfarmstead
@urbanfarmstead 3 года назад
Aisha Cervantes thank you! I actually have a full video and a follow-up video about my wood chip pathways if you’re interested. It’s true that too much woody material in your soil can hold up nitrogen so it’s less available to your plants but that’s usually woody compost and less likely with pathways or mulch.

I've done everything wrong fertilizer wise for my tomatoes. I just checked my liquid fertilizer's "NPK" and the nitrogen is 14, phosphorus 4, and potassium 8. I probably won't get any tomatoes this year. I appreciate the info so I won't be ignorant next year about NPK for productive summer tomatoes.

Hi Kyle, Your doing an outstanding job! my question is do you prune your tomatoes? They look so awesome.

I have a small 70 ft square garden in an urban 6a setting and i’m on my second growing season. At this point, my bigger challenges are: - tomatoes splitting (we don’t have a drip irrigation system yet, and even though were very thoughtful about watering consistency, we still have most of our tomatoes cracked) - peppers just starting to set fruit, after 10+ weeks from transplant (i almost lost fate there but they’re coming) - diseased cukes; we’ve harvested quite a few but now they’re yellowing and drying up before fully growing (we had some cucumber beattles, might have something to do with that?) - zucchinis just dead; first powdery mildew and more recently the main stems were just completely eaten by some sort of pest/larva until the plant died. :( Definitely have still lots to learn. Any advice is welcomed!! :)

Amazing garden. What do you do with all those tomatoes? Do you all can them? Sell them? or give them to friends and family. I can't imagine having that great of a crop! Thanks for sharing your gardening skills with us.

I mixed a 5 gal bucket with liquid fertilizer to apply the following day. This bucket also acted as a weight to hold one corner of plastic covering down/ ( raised garden.) Each corner had a 5 gal bucket. The only bucket with Ice the next day was the one with fertilizer. The 3 with only water did not freeze. May be best to hold off using fertilizer until threat of frost has passed.

Those are great looking tomatillos. The beat thing about growing your own is they are just better, more meat, more sweet, and more healthy. Once you go homegrown you can’t go back.

Hi Kyle. LOVE YOUR VIDEO!! VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND DETAILS. I heard you mentioned in the video that this "raised row bed" from the ground was temporary because you are going into the "raised bed" way of gardening. Is there a reason why you are switching? Is one way better than the other? I'd like to start with the best way. Linda from southern border TX

Hi, thanks! Yes I’m building raised beds to grow in this summer. In grounds rows are affordable, effective, and easy, but raid beds will our preform them every time.

In your last answer(but raised beds will out preform them every time)to my question, can you answer as to why and how will raised beds out perform "raised row beds"? My biggest appreciation for taking time to answer questions.....not too many people do this. Linda from southern TX

Great video! I’m still learning more on fertilizers. Would it be wise to change fertilizers? I just started my veggies last month and I used a 5-7-3. They are growing well. Some of my tomatoes are starting to grow. Since it’s been a month can I re-fertilizer to a 4-9-3 fertilizer? I’m using organic ones. I don’t want to over use nitrogen but knowing the phosphorus is more needed for the flowering stage. Or is my 5-7-3 one still acceptable? Thanks
