A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1989 NES game, Fester's Quest. For the full review, soundtrack, and screenshot archive, be sure to visit www.nintendocomplete.com/feste...
Fester's Quest is really fun game that get's absolutely blasted for its difficulty level and it's bizarre weaponry. The criticism about its weapons is quite appropriate, but for those that read the instruction book, the secret to making the game MUCH easier (and to play as it was apparently intended) is highlighted on page 12, where it reads: "The use of a 'Turbo' type joystick with rapid fire feature will be quite helpful." Indeed, it turns them game from something that would likely cause nerve damage to one that's still fairly difficult, but much more fun and less frustrating.
Just saying, before someone decides to blast away with, "Nah u cheat bro, turbo is cheats, u didn't play it write til ur tums are bleedin, ur mom is fester" or some other nonsensical, internet-sloppy drivel trying to pass as criticism and/or trolling. :D If you hated this game, try it with a turbo controller. You might find it completely changes your opinion.
This upload is intended to replace the old playthrough I have posted on my channel. The original was only 30fps and SD resolution and missed a couple of things. This one is far more complete and better played, and at better quality. So yeah. Better.

This game (unsurprisingly) gives some really heavy Blaster Master vibes but at the same time feels a lot more technically impressive. The music, though I don't enjoy the soundtrack as much as a whole, really is more impressive and has more depth, especially with all those DPCM samples. A lot of sound effects are the same too and the frogs are literally Boss Fred.

Who would've ever thought that Fester's NES outing would be sooo much better than either Gomez or Puggley's? ...oh, that's right. Anyone who saw that Fester was the only one who got the Sunsoft treatment.

I remember watching the 1991 Addams Family movie on VHS, and it contained a portion of the Victor Mizzy-composed Addams Family theme song arranged by Marc Shaiman and conducted by Hummie Mann. IIRC, both the original TV series and 1991 film were filmed at Hollywood Center Studios on Las Palmas Avenue!

It's not a bad game .. it's just that they made Fester too weak and slow. He should move just a little bit faster and maybe have three or four life bars instead of just two... With the possibility to get 2 more as it is in the game. Then the game would be much better.

I always remember grinding to the 8th/last blue gun before I leave the streets. This game was crazy hard. As a kid, I would get to the 4th boss or so then die… never finished the game until years later when roms came out with save states

I remember getting this game on my 15th birthday at a game store back in 2006. other games I remember getting that day were Stinger(NES), Spy vs Spy(NES), Duck Tales(NES), Cool Spot(SNES), Beethoven's 2nd(SNES), and Mortal Kombat 2(GENESIS). looking at this game now though, it brings back awful memories of how life was looking for me before 2007 came and made me forsake 2006 for good.

Hmm, this seems like a rom, better graphics than original nes uploads. And it is satisfying to watch it played with turbo controller rather than single press buttons. And it is nice that you show all the houses and messages. Very nice.

This game took weeks for me and my brother to get to at least as far as the first boss. This was years ago when we were kids and a lot of writing down and saving passwords and stuff.. who ever made this video is a wizard.. I seen a lot of reviews of this game saying it's hard and stupid but I know now that it's bullshit. Because this player owned it.. That's like the game river city ransom also one of my favorite nes games and someone post a video to show how you can breeze through it in minutes.

I did play it with a turbo controller (I had an NES Advantage as a kid). My problem with this game is I didn't think the graphics and sound compared favorably with Sunsoft's other games. It just seemed kind of an average effort from Sunsoft, though to be fair that's still a whole lot better than most NES games.

The game that my uncle broke an NES out of rage once when he was a kid and started breaking the door of it by punching it. I also remember him punching a Gameboy whenever Terminator 2 pissed him off. And when i was born years later in 1999 and when my dad showed me a open world game on the PS2 called GTA and i was hooked ever since since i thought the game felt like real life and i thought i could throw out all my other games because you couldn't free roam and do whatever you want like on GTA. And when i got addicted to GTA, that's exactly when I became my uncle and started my gaming rage when I was a teenager when I was in junior high and started punching shit such as TVs and controllers whenever I died or got busted on GTA for no stupid reason or a pedestrian doesn't listen to me for some shit or a cheat doesn't work when I type too fast with my controller or when a mod doesn't work.

considering how many times I got my butt kicked that was very satisfying. it didn't help the matter considering I was an 80s baby and that made the game seem even more impossible for me. I wish I had that "auto fire" you were using

It really depends on the game, how hard it is, and how familiar I am with it starting out :) I know this game really well, so this recording I did after one quick run-through just to make sure I remembered where everything was. Some games I end up probably playing all the way through near a dozen times before I feel like I'm good enough to present it. Occasionally I have to do more than that, but thankfully knowing so many games so well sets me up for many of the ones I don't know well before I try to learn and tackle them.

Hey NintendoComplete, you should update this one again, but play also the PAL version (top-loader) to compare them. The PAL version got released later and demonstrates some measure of self-awareness. It does not require a rapid-fire controller or extreme precision with footwork because the buckshot is made of metal and goes through walls. Also, the first version did not need a rapid-fire controller, it needed the player to be move around heavy enemies instead of trying to kill everything before getting a whip. Oh, and a color TV just in case you want the weapons to stay sharp.
@zitherq5761
@zitherq5761 2 года назад
Lol yes on color TV. Could someone tell the difference between the blue and red ones in monochrome? I bet sunsoft made it hard lol. And if Mario 1 and 3 was seen in monochrome, you'd probably take any mushroom you can, 1up or powerup lol Now Mario 2 Lost Levels, which has posion mushrooms... hmm I have a feeling you could tell. Although It's been awhile since I've seen the original version of Lost Levels haha

@NintendoComplete

starofjustice1 Yeah, I don't get it. They're instructions lol. I don't see the point in getting frustrated at a game and being critical if you couldn't even bother to try to learn how to play it first. I guess some people will go to any lengths to defend ignorance, though :)
@starofjustice1
@starofjustice1 6 лет назад
I mean I don't hold it against people who prefer to just pick up the game and figure out how it works from playing around with the controls. But they make instructions so you can use this thing you bought from them with your hard-earned money. Maybe if we were talking about Earthbound where the manual was just the strategy guide with all the maps, enemy stats and spoilers for everything in the whole game. But a tiny quick reference? Srsly?

@elwoodjacobs4353
@elwoodjacobs4353 Год назад
The only way to make this game even _remotely_ tolerable is to play it on an emulator with Turbo controls enabled & to input cheat codes so that Fester starts with the best gun & whip, so that the red gun & whip boxes don't make you lose ypur upgrades, & so that he has an unlimited supply of money, keys, & lightbulbs so you don't have to spend an *_HOUR_* grinding for them. That's what really kills the game in its purest form for me: the *slow, tedious, **_PAINFUL_* farming you have to do before you can even _start_ the friggin' quest. By the time I've gotten the best gun & enough supplies to get by, I'm so burnt out from the farming that I don't even want to continue onto the rest of the quest.

It's great music, no question, but so incongruous to the license (beginning and game over aside) that it makes the Addams Family association seem that much more tenuous. Blaster Master 2? Nope, you're an Addams Family game now!
