Episode 45
Uncle Fester's Quest : The Addams Family is well known for its difficulty. One wrong move, and it's back to the beginning! If that sounds unappealing, don't worry - with tricks in this video you'll never die!
This game was made by Sunsoft, one of the best developers of games based on licensed properties for the NES. They made Batman, and Gremlins 2, but this game actually came before all of those, and was their first foray into the world of licensing.
So how did Sunsoft lock down the license for such a big property with no prior experience? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the game play where we'll learn:
* The best way to POWER UP FAST! Don't be stuck with bad weapons, and items!
* Where to find the HEALTH CONTAINER UPGRADES - Max out your health!
* The location of every WEAPON AND ITEM - Where to find everything!
* The SECRET GLITCH that will kill bosses in a single hit!
* Find ALL of the Addams Family members - Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsly, Thing, Mama, and even Gomez!
* MAPS for every building maze - never get lost again!
* How to beat the UFO - You can do it!
* The ultimate strategy for defeating EVERY BOSS, even the ALIEN LEADER... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

@@UCanBeatVideoGames there's a really good video by explod2A03 talking about the sunsoft bass! the gist is they went about it by using dpcm bass samples instead of the NES's usual square/triangle waves, giving it that deeper and more "punchy" feeling.

The Addams Family was popular in reruns and advertising at the time, geared more towards the younger generation. Same reason why the movie ended up getting made, why the original Star Trek got more popular, and why Gilligan's Island became popular again, it was cheap rerun content for TV stations to run.
@SamtheBravesFan

Agreed. And that's fine. Sometimes things get popular through reruns.
@shabmaster7128
@shabmaster7128 3 года назад
@@SamtheBravesFan it was really a response to the rise in independent TV stations and cable networks that exclusively existed in the 70s and 80s that allowed this to really happen. We saw a mini version of the same thing with the rise of streaming, but the time frame was more condensed. No one back when these shows were being newly produced expected anything like that type of content market to exist.
@dark14life
@dark14life 3 года назад
Exactly. TBS back in the 80's would air reruns of Gilligan's Island and The Addams Family. Which my sister and I watched a lot. My dad was a huge Star Trek fan so we always watched the reruns of that, as well. Reruns really helped those shows gain traction with my generation and resulted in The Addams Family movies and TNG being created.

Your comment about it being a nightmare for color blind people really struck home. I am not color blind, but my parents would only let the nes be hooked up to an old black and white television for awhile. Not sure how I ever reached the 4th boss without knowing if each gun/whip would level me up or down. Later when hooked up to a color television, it was so much more enjoyable.

A childhood favorite of mine, and still a strong title in my NES library! Just a note about the story: the aliens abduct the townspeople, not Gomez. Gomez stays at the Addams' house to protect it while Fester and the rest of the fam take on the aliens. That's why he's in that cutscene when you get the 4th health box. The story is in the manual. I can send a link to a site that has scans for most NES manuals if you'd like it. Also, the dot after you get all the clues reveals the location of the final boss. It isn't really helpful either way, but that's what it's supposed to do.

Numerous design flaws aside it's... well it's actually still pretty bad. It enjoys a peculiar scenario in which it's both iconic and utterly abysmally bad. Worth playing but don't get your hopes high for this one. I did a video on this one too, but it's a review, not a playthrough.

This game was my first experience with "Game Engines." When I was a kid, I couldn't help but notice it was very similar to Blaster Master. Little did I know that both Blaster Master and Fester's Quest shared a lot of the same code and had basically the same game engine.

I feel like the red gun downgrades in this game are just more honest versions of the crappy weapons in games like Ghosts 'n Goblins, which pretend like they are legit weapons, but are totally not.

When I first got my NES I of course got Super Mario Bros as it came with the system, as well as Duck Hunt (I got that pack with the zapper). That held me over for quite a while but of course aøø my friends played Zelda! So I wanted that, and asked for it. Apparently though, Zelda was too expensive while this was under half prize so this is what I got. I never finished this one, and I think I traded it in with a few other games to get Super Mario 3 later. Which I sometimes regret because I can still remember every morning before school trying to get a bit further the twenty minutes I had before I had to leave the cozy kitchen to get outside and leave for school. And of course I played it a lot after too, but oddly it is the morning runs I did that sticks more strongly. Of course I knew that I would NEVER finish it in those twenty or so minutes but I got further and further and became an ace at clearing that first part of the game. ;-)

I remember this game. I was too young at the time to understand it was an Adam's family game. I never knew of the show. It was never a hard game, just a tedious one and poorly laid out. You spend so much time grinding power ups and items before wandering off aimlessly trying to figure out where to go next and having zero clue what the items did. I remember playing this game with I think was a Nintendo Power walk through. Knowing where to go helped a lot, and after a lot of grinding, I finally beat this game. Satisfied, I took it out of the NES and never touched it again.

If there was ever a genre for "chore games" Fester's Quest would have to be really high on that list. I mean, they obviously went out of their way to give all enemies so much HP that even the term "Bullet Sponge" doesn't really cover it. Was interesting to know that the PAL version of the game is arguable a lot more playable/enjoyable of an experience.

This was the game that my uncle rage quit on when he was a kid back in the early 90's and he broke the door off a NES due to this game by punching the top of it because he kept dying over and over again. My dad also remembers my uncle punching a Gameboy whenever Terminator 2 pissed him off.

Instant like and subbed. sorry if i sounded like a tool here but I really like this channel alot so far :) This is like "Until we win". Didn't grow up playing most NES games so I've never played this game but I did grow up playing the 16bit era addams family games which were enjoyable rentals back in the day, the movies and cartoons were really great and the movies still hold up which I don't say so often about most old media.

Some huge notes from yours truly regarding the mothership maze: You can spawn up to three of those Mr. I (those small, bouncy pink guys). Then, you shoot each Mr. I twice with your needle gun to make them move faster. Use the square room you started at to pull all this off. That done, let them follow you and remain visible at the screen at all times. When you get to the waving hallway, you can use its design to bundle the three Mr. I together, making it supremely easier for you to keep your eye (haw, haw, haw) on them. And finally, while you are babysitting the Mr. I triplets, navigate through the mothership maze from start of finish. My point with all this? Well, due to this game's sprite limitation, you will never suffer the major nuisances that are the other enemies, because the three Mr. I keep on blocking the others from spawning in, granting you a far more safer advance. Just don't run into a dead end, as that will most likely result in you losing a block of health from colliding into the Mr. I bunch, as you U-Turn back. Though, that's more on you for not memorizing the maze right. And yes, that means that you don't have to use a single noose when inside the mothership, though the small island before it, you can use a few of the nooses, to keep the Big Mouths and their downgrading drops away from you. Oh, and did I forget to mention that the Mr. I trick can fully prevent you from seeing those dastardly drops at all? On top of all this, you have a far easier time of dealing with the final boss, as you can keep all of your ten potions stacked up and ready. You don't even have to utilize the going-to-very-right-after-destroying-the-turrets trick, though you have to destroy the turrets before you can do some extra damage to the final boss with your needle gun, while your missiles are buzzing all over, praying to hit the target. You also have to find both of the health upgrades, time your missile fire so it won't get interrupted by the orange projectile, and utilize as many seconds of your invincibility buffers as you can, to defeat this equivalent of Mother Brain with brute force. Proof of all this is in my playthrough of this game, so do check it out for visual proof if you find this comment of mine to be utter gibberish.

The game that my uncle broke an NES out of rage once when he was a kid and started breaking the door of it by punching it. I also remember him punching a Gameboy whenever Terminator 2 pissed him off. And when i was born years later in 1999 and when my dad showed me a open world game on the PS2 called GTA and i was hooked ever since since i thought the game felt like real life and i thought i could throw out all my other games because you couldn't free roam and do whatever you want like on GTA. And when i got addicted to GTA, that's exactly when I became my uncle and started my gaming rage when I was a teenager when I was in junior high and started punching shit such as TVs and controllers whenever I died or got busted on GTA for no stupid reason or a pedestrian doesn't listen to me for some shit or a cheat doesn't work when I type too fast with my controller or when a mod doesn't work.
