I will be honest here, the descriptive information on development ie... where it came from, how it got started and other interesting articles of note that the general public typically would not be aware of unless it was being studied is why I watch you. I still feel it was a lost calling of mine.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Hey man I love these! Any chance you can tangent from Nintendo games and start doing full in-depth reviews on amazing 80s games like the Space Quest series, Kings Quest, and Police Quest? That would be exhaustive but so cool! 👍👍
The battle of Olympus is a Japanese game developed by Broderbund and Imaginer. This game Broderbund's Kid Icarus is by Nintendo partner. The classic game Castlevania Clone name (River City Ransom), Mega MAN and Ninja Gaiden.
Thank you for doing this one especially! This was my favorite game back in the day. It really got me interested in Greek mythology, and every chance I had I would try to buy a book about them. The music just brings me back lol. I remember my mom sitting behind me on the couch, watching me play and trying to help me out with the puzzles lol
Artemis actually makes sense to give the moon pearl, as the moon is one of her symbols. She was often associated with Selene, the goddess of the moon. Apollo instead symbolized by the sun as he is often associated with Helios, the god of the sun.
I learned about this as an adult, it really does seem like a refined Z2 (also, more fun)! Also, I guess I need this, because clearly all NES games with Dolphins are God-Tier! Man, those skies in this one are amazing! This game was truly a labor of love!
This was, and truly still is, one of my all time favorite games. I'm a big fan of Greek mythology, so as you can imagine this game appealed to me as a gamer & as a fan of Greek mythology. It's actually impressive to see someone playing this game with some skill. And the game developer is right, this game wash hard as hell. I loved it soooo much, despite how frustrating it was. I can't remember if I beat this game or not, but I am pretty sure I did because I remembered that ending image. Edit: Also, I never realized that Hermès temple use the Toccata & Fugue organ music by Johan Sebastian Bach. That was interesting to note.
Ummm, why would Apollo give you the Moon Pearl? Artemis is the Goddess moon & the hunt... makes sense she would have the moon pearl. Apollo was the god of The Sun, Arts & music.
This was another game i played a lot as a kid but never could finish it, just didnt really know where to go or what to do as a kid. Pretty cool to see the ending finally
I always loved this game as a kid. I was a huge fan of reading Greek mythology when I was young, and I played both Zelda 1 and 2 frequently (I honestly liked 2 better) and my favorite Castlevania game was Simon's Quest... So this game was just super fun to me in so many ways. With that said, late in the video you said "you'd think that Apollo would give us the Moon Pearl, but nah, it's Artemis" But no, the 3 devs did their homework correctly. Apollo is god of the sun, and his twin sister Artemis is goddess of the moon. 😉
Now you've done Zelda 2, Faxanadu, and The Battle of Olympus. Maybe one day we'll get to see you beat Rambo on the NES, which is also pretty similar to these games.
Great video, I love this game so much! I know this is pedantic, but in case you wanted to know, "Eurydice" is usually pronounced "Yur-ee-dee-see." Some people also use the ecclesiastical latin pronunciation "Yur-ee-dee-chee." If you REALLY wanted to be authentic you would use the greek pronounciation of "Yur-ee-dee-kee."
I’ve attempted this game far too many times over the years. I tend to get so lost about 1/3 of the way through. Probably the closest I got was as a kid with a buddy of mine but…. We never completed it lol.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames The commercials at the time made it seem like that too. When I got and beat the game in 1990, I actually though I was playing a Zelda offshoot sequel along with The Gaurdian Legend. Too bad that marketing didn't work out better.
How did it appeal to you? I tried it because of all the hype and felt really underwhelmed. I only rented it and had it for 5 days and was like... ehhh... makes me wanna play Zelda 2 What did you enjoy?
@@brittislove I love Zelda II and have played it many times, but Battle of Olympus is so much better. The story, colors, graphics, creatures and music are all superior.
It also goes to show how rudimentary games can be pulled together with very small teams. I know a lot of guys who are slaving away making games in their spare time that they've been working on for years. If a handful of them got together and promised to work on all of their games until they were complete, they'd probably be able to complete them. At all let alone faster, and they'd probably be better too since it would be more than just one guy working at it and overlooking problems other people would notice.
Battle of Olympus, Adventure of Link, and Simon's Quest were the three that really got me into gaming. I've always remembered Zelda and Castlevania and, a decade later, I bought an NES from Funco Land hoping to play BoO again. Except I had forgotten what it was called. I bought Rygar the same day and was convinced for about 5 minutes that it was the right game, but I came to my senses. Too much red and orange in Argool. I bought Blaster Master, figuring that my memories were maybe just warped from playing that. Of course not. It took probably about a year before I figured out the Battle of Olympus title. I got a cart and it all came rushing back: The music in the starting forest area, farming snake skins, riding the dolphin across the sea, finding the hidden doors. I got pretty far, but never did finish it. This is going to be a great watch. Thank you!
This game is a hidden gem. I loved it as a kid, it brings chills to me thinking about it to this day. Tears to my eyes how it brought our family together each playing certain parts. It took my cousins, brother, even grandma to beat this game back in the 90's. I want to see them do a sequel to this game so bad...
@@capitalistpigsa1 Guardian Legend is amazing. Unfortunately, I don't know how well he could do a walk-thru of that game since many aspects of it use RNG(one of the first games to do that, which is what makes it so epic).
Oh snap, I had requested this. You actually seen it. Finally someone with expert gaming skill tackle this game. I could never beat this game for the life of me. Ever since I was a kid. Still to this day due to not knowing where to go. Man, I'm on the verge of tears that you did this. Wow. You got a subscriber for life, bro
Thank you so much, Dickens! I found my old passwords for this game from when I was a kid, but this is one I have no idea how I was able to figure it out with almost no Nintendo Power coverage, and no internet to look stuff up. I must have spent a ton of time with this one back then, I definitely remember grinding for Salamander skins to get that shield.
When I was a kid, I vividly remember a commercial for both The Guardian Legend and The Battle of Olympus. I remember finding it strange that there would be a commercial for two seemingly unrelated games at once! At the time I didn’t know they were from the same publisher!
I remember it. Whenever I see this game it pops in my head. I remember one part in particular where the announcer loudly proclaims "BATTLE OF OLYMPUS". I did not remember the Guardian Legend part tho.
Sadly I never even heard of the battle of Olympus. I would love to see you play Guardian Legend as well as a rather obscure favorite of mine the magic of scheherazade.
This was one of my favorite games. Bought it when it came out. Still have the cartridge. (Wish I still had all my old games! lol) Thanks for your videos. Love them!
1:24:10 "One last time, we'll pass through Argolis. Past the setting sun." This is the kind of colour that I love that you bring to your commentary. And is part of why I enjoyed watching this entire video beginning to end. Thank you for making it.
Great intro, man. I always thought this game's history alone deserved it more attention. I had no idea that Infinity was still around, and the president is still programming no less! That should be a bit of inspiration for any game developer.
On the olive strategy, you can cluster them better in the area leading to Algoris and go back and forth between the open area and the trees on the left where you would emerge from the door the old lady warns you about not having the staff. I just discovered it a few minutes ago as of this writing. Cluster them like you would on the right side and take them out. Then, move a bit off screen until you see worm sprites on the upper right corner of your screen and move back right and they'll be on the ground instead of on the treetop. Kill those and move about a meter or two from the door. If you head back to the left, the same cluster of worms will spawn on the ground. Just be careful with the spear bear guy. Try it out! Here's a short video of me pulling it off ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2LX2PB56XGY.html
I was lucky enough to have this one as a kid but I never managed to beat it. I think I got as far as Crete? Last year I started re-collecting all my lost NES games and I made pretty good progress on this one but I need to go back and beat it for real this time! Thanks so much for covering these amazing games with such depth. You're my favorite RU-vid channel right now!
Me too. I played this game one year ago, and it gave me a lot of struggle. However I could beat it and I'm happy about it. It is actually a really good game!
If they had achievements 1% of people would have the “land your plane for the first time” achievement. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XS7AvmHAk6o.html
24:23 Nice throwback to your Zelda video and keeping it fun. Great job as usual! Really enjoying the history, review and gameplay all in one. This game got lumped in as a Zelda 2 kind of knockoff and didn't much attention.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Of course, got a chuckle from that one! You have a good sense of humor about things, and keep your content fun and interesting at the same time.
24:22 LMAO I remember. ALSO! Arcadia is the name of the bar I go to in Portland, ME and I would recommend it to anyone who might be visiting. Real cool place with arcade machines and pinball and skeeball and great cocktails.
Hey man, great run. I always heard of this game but never checked it out until now. Looks like an interesting game. I got two noteworthy ones I'd love to see you tackle down the road. The two Golgo 13 games for the NES. Both of those, especially the first are some of the hardest games on the system. The first one is Top Secret Episode and the second one is the Mafat Conspiracy. Both of those have some crazy twists and turns. I'd definitely recommend getting the manual pdf's if you do so, for the mazes BOTH games have. Keep up the great work.
Wow, Ultima IV is such a cool game. I beat the NES version, and that's the one I have nostalgia for, though the pc one is free and is pretty cool too, just harder to get into. I like how you correct "poisonous" to "venomous" lol
Fun fact on Phyrigia; Phyrigian scale is one of the Greek modes in music, and is the scale you'd naturally play if you played the white keys on a piano from E up to the next E. The musician on this game was clearly a music dork like me, because the music that plays in this region uses Phyrigian scale, which is rarely used on its own.
This Game Reminds me of the 1ST Clash of the Titans Movie' oh and the WAY i can Finish OFF Hades' is to Throw Bolts at his FEET' you Only Take him out the LONG Way' and That Takes Forever' but Anyway' i Also Know some Tricks on This Game That you Dont even Know About.
I love my dog so much - he's a really good boy. Would you believe we got him as a puppy for free? A 90 year old couple adopted him, and just couldn't handle the energy of Golden Retriever puppy. He needed a new home, and we got to the lucky family that took him in.
Most people don't know how to pronounce 'Cerberus'. Because the letter 'c' in Greek is never pronounced as an 's', 'Cerberus' is pronounced "KER ber us". As a matter of fact, the Roman spelling is 'Kerberos'. This is the same reason why the Greek name 'Icarus' ('Ikaros' in Roman) is pronounced 'ICK er us'.
Battle of Olympus, modeled after Zelda II, uses both an ocarina and a lyre, which they call a "harp". Zelda: Ocarina of Time uses an ocarina (modeled after the "whistle" in ALttP) as well as a lyre, also called "harp" and of similar design, for it's musical instruments. Coincidence?
My mom bought this game off the home shopping club back in the day. I remember calling Nintendo Power and asking how to get past the Cyclops, it took them 30 minutes of looking to give me an answer!!! :|
I don’t understand why this game wasn’t more highly regarded. It honestly is one of the best looking and most polished NES games. The tile set and graphics work is phenomenal, the controls seem tight and responsive, and the music is really good.
Oh dude absolutely-this & a game called Guardian Legend (oh well…he just brought it up) These 2 games were the most immersive I had ever gotten from these games; & I couldn’t find it again till…hell long time. Maybe even Demon’s Souls I dunno Tough games that took actual time & thinking-loved this
rough rough rough rough rough rough rough MEOW! :) thanks for the videos - they are fun - I beat this on a ROM in late 90s on a computer with a controller with all those pins on the back for an old computer lol - nice to rewatch and see what to do in order instead of wandering not knowing at times - olive collecting is a pain in Azz in this game :)
I remember unplugging my new Sega Genesis to hook the NES back up to play this when new. Totally agree with your thoughts here. Great game, good times!
my cousin had this game. id play it every weekend a this house and tell everyone at school about it... they for years told me i was an idiot and making it up. whos laughing now toby?! your mom and dad got divorced!
33:43 well, olives were something of a luxury item in Greece, even to this day, and high-value items are often granted as offerings to divinities of the culture who considers it such, so aside from being able to eat them, the Gods probably valued them as a measure of their followers' sentiment and faith towards them.
