Good Question, you shut off the inlet water, open the spout till empty then with a carafe under the unit you slowly loosen the solenoid screws to allow water to pass into the carafe. Do this till the tank is empty.
I think the tube you are referring to is called the overflow tube. If you have water flowing out that, then your fill valve is not shutting tight and should be replaced. Do you agree with that? let me know what happens either way.
