Don' do that. The Clamp-screws, driven in the end grain are not at all stabile. The speed is not about a quarter as recommended for router bits. The bit is not fixed strong enough in such a machine. There are some more points... THIS IS DANGEROUS! Kick-back, losing bits at full speed . . .
Very clever project. However, drills and routers have different kinds of bearings. Routers always have bearings designed for lateral thrust. Plunge routers also are designed to resist linear/axial thrust, the same way drill motors are designed. Most drill motors do not have bearings which are designed for lateral thrust. If you build a router using a drill motor please be careful of the load placed laterally on the shaft. Otherwise you will quickly wear out the drill motor bearings. Unfortunately, crafts people learn this lesson on drill presses which are used for drum sanding. The constant lateral pressure can ruin the drill press’s runout if the bearings are not designed for lateral thrust. Good quality woodworking drill presses have bearings designed for both lateral and linear pressure. Many metalworking drill presses, especially inexpensive ones, do not have the lateral thrust bearings and are subsequently damaged by lateral thrust applications. I’m in my seventies and have witnessed this firsthand.
Drill chucks are only designed for axial loads. They are not meant for side loads and can easily fail when such a load is applied. Routers and end mills need to be secured in a collet to be used safely.
@@xfhghe : Great comment! The drill chuck incompatibility with side loading will likely cause a failure long before the drill’s bearings. Please notice the rarity of a drill chuck being used on a milling machine for any purpose other than drilling, reaming, or tapping.
Bearings, chucks and safety aside, its still a very clever piece of engineering. Ive never routed with a drill, but we've all used them laterally at some point to widen out a hole or something
And yet, He achieved the result he needed. These videos are about resourcefulness, ingenuity, and sharing ideas (things that build nations by the way), not about reaching the best result or even about achieving the same result as a purpose made tool.
A durabilidade é mínima.
Coat both mating surfaces and let sit for maybe 5 minutes. Then apply another coat of glue especially on the end grain. Let stand a fee minutes to allow glue viscosity to increase. Then join. Doing so allows the glue to be absorbed into the wood grain creating a stronger joint
Next, coat your hands and arms in glue and apply liberal sheets of carbon fiber, for when, not if, this contraption decides to buckle and tear a hole in your wrist.
Router involves higher speeds and hence it will result in a fine cut. Drills do not provide that much of speed and hence the cutting/grooving will not be smooth enough.
That’s true, but in situations where you might want better control of the situation the lower speed might come in handy. Also, if you do not have a router. This would help you greatly to have a conversion kit for your drill. I have a conversion kit for my dremil and use it quite frequently. Of course as you say, the dremil does have the higher speeds.
WING NUTS... Thanks for the video I think I am going to try it I was just going to say, have you thought about using wing nuts for the depth adjustment? (...just thinking it might be easier than using a screwdriver...) (but I think a hand-held router would work just as well?) ? Again thanks for the video- it looks like it works well!
A drill for screws. And drilling small holes. A router is for removing larger portions of material ( mainly wood) at higher rpm’s and much sturdier. The right tool for the right job. You can use a screwdriver to drive a nail but it doesn’t mean you should. But you got an a for effort I guess
I worked with industrial woodworking routers wadkin bursgreen machinery the speed needs to be at least 15 to 20 thousand rpm at the bit to be safe and accurate.
Google says "Drills lack the power and speed for effective and safe routing. Routers and drills both work by rotating a bit secured in a chuck, or collet, but that's where most of their similarities end. ... This mechanical difference, among others, makes a drill unsuitable for use with a router bit."
I was thinking this would be a great option if you have a small job to do and cannot justify the cost of buying a new tool that you won't likely need to use again. Not as a permanent replacement that would get lots of use.
What a truly hideous idea to adapt a drill for a router, why?? Not enough rpm, timber and screws as an adjustment clamp 😳😳totally dangerous in every respect!! . I'm a carpenter of 25 years and it goes to prove the safety standards and thought process difference between the UK and certain European countries.
Hmmm - novel idea, but I think I'll stick to my router table. Drills don't have the necessary RPM - somewhere above 20K as I recall. Mine's close to 30K RPM from memory. The neighbours love it when I fire up that sucker early on a Sunday morning. :-)
But also pretty dangerous, its a fact that you can take any motor and adapt those cutting tools and do the same, you hit the nail, buy a router that is built to not destroy your fingers
Totally agree, a spinning motorised tool can be used and adapted for a range of purposes but why?? this is hideous and clearly not safe, anybody who thinks these wooden deathtraps adaptions are a good idea needs to seriously get a grip. I'm a carpenter of 25 years.
@@buster8015 I wish I had seen this a year ago before I spent a lot of money (I could ill afford) on a router that I use periodically. I don't see how using this device is more dangerous than using the drill to drill holes in a wall! It's probably safer.
@@josephwalsh3401I could not disagree more, hideous makeshift tools are not a substitute for approved and tested equipment. Not to mention the time and effort involved to produce these devices. To endorse such ideas is as idiotic as the concept itself
