FFXIV - The Tank experience 

If I'm not making the healer cry, am I really tanking? If I die than...uh...guess I'll only pull 4 groups instead of five.

@@Jian13 personally i prefer tanking, though i have all jobs maxed out. If im (rarely) healing a dungeon, I will only cry if tank pulls less than w2w without good reason or if the tank has no stance on. so when i tank (and i tank well) I have certain expectations for healer and wont feel bad if I die because of them not doing their part

@Doppelganger I play DRK, which, at least last time I played, is the squishiest tank, so just constantly at 10 to 50% hp. I just imagine they wish I wouldn't aggro the dungeon.

​@@DoppelgangerTH For me a good reason to not wall-to-wall is if you're not comfortable with tanking or if the dungeon is below level 30. As a RPR and DRK main I really appreciate when tanks pop their mitigations properly and pull big because it makes me less conscious about wasting my CDs, and also makes me less worried as a healer that I am not doing my job correctly. I did duty roulette once as Sage and was wondering why my heals weren't going through and lo and behold the only mitigation the Tank was using during any of the trash pulls was TBN.

Was in Akadaemia Anyder and Heals said "Run" so I did and pulled everything. I never felt so free with 100 monsters chasing me.

​@@BirdCyclops 10% of 90% of the time I do know which of the two tanks has aggro so I can mit the gigabuster that's coming out next. And the one after that when I forget if I'm supposed to voke or shirk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why Rampart first when you got Arm's Length, though? When you got the second group, hit Reprisal and wait until it runs out, then Rampart :D

@@xiaocheng6643 because you'd want to use Rampart at the start when there's more enemies and Reprisal later when some have hopefully died since Rampart will come back for the next pull anyway. Definitely remember Arm's Lenght after Rampart though yeah. And maybe stun some big enemies if there's no White Mage since it comes back so fast

That's surprisingly accurate. I main healer, and even though light parties basically wipe if I die, I feel *even more pressure* tanking. Am I making my healer burn GCDs? Did I bork my mitigations? CAN MY DPS AOE THE PACK CORRECTLY?! Don't call me out like this. I've been tanking since I started when 5.4 came out on paladin. I know what I'm doing but it's so scary half the time..I really do feel like a Pomeranian with all my tankxiety

Been tanking in mmos for 20 years, some healers in FF14 managed to make me doubt myself, until I saw them doing nothing while the whole group is taking unavoidable aoe damages, not even healing themselves nor doing any dps ... and then complaining about dying first ... Yeah, sometimes it's rough ...

As a tank main. The second was 10,000 percent me. But now after Warrior I finally feel confident I’m taxing my healers as LITTLE as is possible! Additionally, when you are in a voice chat with your healer…. Bloodwhetting. Wait to run out. Arm’s length, vengeance, reprisal. Wait for low health. Thrill of battle, Equalibrium, Shake it off. rampart. Wait for the last moment. Holmgang. Then by the time Holmgang is about to run out Bloodwhetting should be back, and healer spent the WHOLE time doing nothing but damage! And since you only need your aoes and inner release on your “Dungeon trash” bar. It’s borderline effortless! That all said though. Never. Let. It. Go. To. Your. Head. EVER. A tank needs their healer for the group and themself when they inevitably make a mistake. Your healed keeps you and your team alive. The DPS make the content go faster, a good dps can and will make any fight infinitely less of a chore. The faster it goes, the less mechanics you need to do. And the less mechanics you do, the less healing, tanking, and mistakes you’ve got to worry about. Every role has it’s place holding the group together. Unless you have a team of eight warriors spamming Nascent Glint. Honestly I’d love to see an all warrior team just regening to fast for the boss to do anything. All of them then pop their inner release at the same time and have the legendary EIGHTFOLD FELL CLEAVE!!!

Bonus Points if it is for the Dungeon Boss and not a trash pack!

First time I did that as a tank was pain, along with Aurum Vale

​@@delilah9252 the main issue with the DPS running ahead and actually pulling is that there can be a lot of reasons why a tank decides to take things slower and someone else forcefully pulling a bunch of stuff makes aggro management a pain in the ass. Sometimes I'll pull less if myself or the healer is under-geared, if I haven't played in a while so want to ease back in while picking up the pace later in the dungeon, healer asked me to go slow for whatever reason, or I'm just not feeling 100%. While I get that people want to clear as quickly as possible, it should be the roles most effected by pack sizes that have the biggest say in how much the group should pull

@@earlknit5372 ???? What aggro management now? aggro management is so easy now, literally 1 aoe takes agro off of anyone. Whether it's wall to wall or single pulling your rotation as the tank is the same and by default the game is designed to be tanked wall to wall from heavensward onwards, excluding some spicy pulls in Bardam's mettle and Mt Gulg. Literally the only time you'll want to slow down is if the healer can't keep up with the healing for whatever reason.

​@GuyHero Don't be a try-hard, jackass. If someone wants to take it slow, take it slow. Don't assume everyone wants the same level of intensity. A slow dungeon is better than no dungeon.

why is it always the NINs? Whenever I see that kind of behavior, it's a NIN. Are they just addicted to going fast?

Had bad anxiety tanking earlier on Grab a usb keyboard if needed but mostly people can read the tells and synergize really well... most times...

Can you use macros on controller? Maybe entering some common phrases you'd use would make it easier. :) Sometimes emotes can also speak volumes lol. Ultimately I haven't seen a need to talk much more than usual as a tank though, with some situational exceptions.

Well, I've been in a few dungeons with paladins who healed the group through an entire boss 'cause the healer got OSed by a mechanic we warned about before the fight, that was fun ( only once the healer warned us at the start it was his first time, and he was apologizing so much we couldn't be angry at him )

I'm newer to tanking and I appreciate a good DPS who can do this. The only time I have gotten annoyed is when they aggro packs and don't bring them to the group I'm currently aoeing. I had a SMN kite around us with the trash pack, and I couldn't for the life of me understand why they didn't just run to me.

I'm both, I don't want people pulling before me if they're going to run around like a headless chicken going "I'm getting hit, keep agro D': bad tank" and making me chase them down for something that was their own fault yet they blame me for. If they wanna bring it to me, all for it, it's why I don't care if healers pull more if I'm not getting the hint they wish to continue (As long as they can heal through it because I'm usually not pulling more because I'm out of good mits).

Maining DRK for so long, with the jankiest invuln by half, leveling PLD and being able to just invuln wall to walls twice per dungeon is so... relaxing.

​@@DoppelgangerTH Yeah, I feel that. I use macro with auto translate to tell tanks to use aoe attacks. If I'm lucky, tanks would communicate back. I remembered I once tanked the whole duty while the astrologian kept healing me.

Warrior’s probably right up your alley, if you’re looking to play at some point. Great tanks, relatively easy to learn, and a LOT of self heals and sustain

@@empressmoni5381 Counterpoint: As a still learning tank with heaps of tanxiety, please try to avoid doing this. And if you pick up aggro, bring it to the tank. Yes it might be 'easy to manage aggro in FFXIV' but you are effectively making the tank's main purpose harder. You have your job. Tanks have theirs. Healers have theirs. We work together but all have different key roles. And personally I don't get upset but I do think this sprint obsession is whack when someone is still learning or is not confident yet - for whatever reason. I know a couple of new players tanking as their first job who have been put off the game, because DPS or healers are being plain impatient. They get told the community is wonderful only to have people making the chosen job harder almost immediately (and often being a bit rude too). Even after communicating the fact that they are new. That's a shame imo. I think if someone signs up to do a duty it will take as long as it takes. Tanks should set the pace in communication with the healer. Not because they are better but because their main role is about getting and keeping aggro. Which is easier to do if they get to mobs first.

i think that is mostly due to being a DPS main, Tank mains doing alt jobs and Healer mains will more readily notice when a tank is bad at what they do, specially in on ShB and EW dungeons cause as a DPS you only know a tank is bad if you are paying close attention at their cooldowns, and even then thats a maybe

As a machinist main, I know when the tank is bad quite easily, wait until the flamethrower is enough to take aggro from the tank ...
