Fibber McGee & Molly Episode Titled Christmas Gift For McGees Nephew. Original Air Date Was 12/20/1938. Unfortunately, Marian Jordan {"Molly"} was off the show during this period, as she was trying to conquer her alcoholism [which she did, returning in April 1939]- that's why the show was billed as "FIBBER McGEE AND COMPANY". Guest star Sam Hearn often appeared as "Schlepperman" {"Hello, stranger!"} on Jack Benny's "JELL-O PROGRAM" at the time.

I wasn’t born until the mid 60s, but I love these radio shows so much. What a way we’ve come, but today, 2019, TV is a real mess. Maybe go back to more radio. Gather the family around for appointment radio! That’s the way it used to be

Crazy times and glad these shows are getting some play again! Turn off the tube and listen to more radio.

I was born in the same era, and it's funny, but my family, like many at the time, had only one tv, and we watched together, kind of like how families gathered to listen to the radio. Back then, tv was a communal activity, and children watched what the adults chose and there wasn't a lot of violence or vulgarity. (That was for the movies!) These days, everyone goes off on their own . . . it's kind of alienating. I appreciate the range of entertainment options we have, but I miss the sense of togetherness we lost.

Does anyone know the subsequent life of Marion Jordan as she overcame her alcoholism? Did she ever go to A.A. ? I have been in 12 steps 35 years but it was quite different then; Women in a 12 step group were largely unheard of. And being famous in show business must have been dreadful. I certainly hope she found a group of A.A'ers to share and care. It's priceless. 🔺 m

From Wikipedia - In 1938, the show and Jordan would both suffer major changes. During this time, Marian was drinking excessively. She entered a rehabilitation center in suburban Chicago and tried to get sober. The Jordan children were in high school and college. "Molly" was written out of the radio show, and the program was renamed Fibber McGee and Company. Those who knew Marian doubted that she would ever return to radio, especially after the show moved from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1939. However, Marian astonished everyone by travelling alone from Joliet, Illinois to Pasadena, California in March 1939. She was able to return to the character of "Molly," and some listeners considered her better than before.

Fibber and Molly were two of the biggest and most talented comics in radio history, and thats according to Bob Hope. In a rare radio reunion on PBS in the early 70s Jim Jordan brought down the house with his opening remark, "Did you ever see so many old people?!"

Great show. This was Fibber McGee and Company. Marion Jordan (Molly) was off the show for 17 months due to illness. It is speculated that she was battling alcoholism. She would return in 1939 when the program moved from Chicago to Hollywood.

Sounds like the conductor was Harold Peary... soon-to-be Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve.

Marian Jordan was in rehab again in the 50s, right?

Think that's when she became really ill and cut back from performing.

@@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE I've read articles that claim she was in a treatment for alcoholism, but I've not found conclusive evidence that was the case. Her health certainly did begin to decline in the '50s and contributed to her early death.

It was very sad, because her husband Jim Jordan lived into his 90s I think.
