Build Montage of preparing a plaster mold of an RC sailboat to make a fiberglass hull.
Steps:
- build box for the mold (use sealed wood or it will warp)
- fill some voids in box with foam
- wax boat hull plug
- position hull in box
- fill box with plaster and allow to dry
- extract hull from plaster mold
- polyurethane plaster mold and wax
- apply mold release
To much work... not worth the time... turns out the sailboat still is available for purchase and is worth the price given how labor intensive this was just to make the mold.
The second part will have laying the fiberglass and joining the halves.

Thanks! I am working on my presentation. its hard to edit such a long video. I did the project 6 months ago so have forgotten a lot of the important things to say about the build. Second part coming soon!

Step 1. Have boat.

haha yes. good point. Ever watch RamyRC channel? maybe I'll 3D print my next mold like he does for his planes. I have a pretty cool Riva Aquarama I started scratch building out of wood years ago that I may revisit.

Really are you kidding me!?... as a journeyman boat builder of over 30 some years I can't believe you remade the plug that you had sitting right in your hand! All you had to do was add flanges to the hall and the deck and the small parks do a little Bondo filling create some radiuses Sandahl down to at least a thousand Grit... clean of course... wax wax wax... and then start laminating... I'm guessing about three layers of cheesecloth for what you were doing would have sufficed. Add stiffening gussets to all mold parts... glass them in place also... then separate the parts from the mold Lala you're done! Short-term maybe tweaking the mold... hand waxing waxing waxing... you are now ready to lay up your next parts.

That's what I wanted todo but the part is ABS and I cheaped-out on the resin and got polyester resin instead of epoxy resin so the curing temps would have melted the plug. Surprisingly this is the most popular video on my channel so I intend to revisit and make another fiberglass boat. I will be trying to 3D print a mold for next time. Like what RamyRC channel does for the airplane parts. Thanks watching and commenting!

haha it was also my first time doing fiberglass since I was 13 when I repaired a tiny old outboard speedboat I found abandoned in the woods.

Nice video. Polyester resin will not attack ABS and if you were to put a few light layers of glass over the hull after prep/waxing (as DANIMAL suggested) let set before applying a few heavier layers you would have been fine with no heat issues. By the way that’s boat is a Victoria and they are readily available as a fairly complex Kit less electronics for about $210. Again good video except for the music was a bit loud.

Thanks! I get this a lot. Wish I saved the original footage to re-edit!

If you had made the model/plug/pattern upside down it would have been much easier to cast the mold of it. Nobody squished the pattern into the mold material . Was that a Victoria rc you were copying?

Agreed! But I totally would've misjudged its buoyancy on the first attempt.

I get this comment a lot on this video. I wish I kept the original footage to re-edit. I apologize, It was one of my earlier videos. I may end-up redoing it. Thanks for your comment.

Agreed. unfortunately I have deleted all my original footage. There is so much I would do differently now. The issue with my boat videos is that I edited the footage so long after filming I forgot what was where. In the end I just sped-up the pace and overlaid music. I apologize for the inconvenience. I should probably do a recap and lessons learned video for the boatmaking stuff. Or redo the videos; I've been watching RamyRC a lot and have been itching to try making a 3Dprinted mold... But, I'll probably recap before outfitting the hull... too many projects!

Thanks for the response. If you do a 3D printed hull, please spend some time (maybe a separate video) on how to the design work in Fusion 360 , assuming you will use that. Actually printing and assembly is fairly easy, designing and making the stl model is the difficult part. Plus watching it print and doing the final assembly would be rather boring.
@RandomProjectswithSam

@@FoamCrusher agreed. though I do have octoprint with octolapse running on an intel NUC controlling my printer so it does those nifty time lapses of the prints. I have some example print movies posted but nothing serious; I thought I'd use the movies in the videos more when I set it up. Nonetheless, regarding the actual boat, I would be learning the fusion 360 myself... Don't get me wrong, I have a few attempts already at a decent Riva Aquarama that I have plans for. I have a wood skeleton of it I built years ago; Lofting it in fusion is tricky though.

I filmed the footage so long ago I forgot what I said where and didn't have the time to wade through the hours of footage to find the few good things I said. :) So I sped it up and used the free soundtracks RU-vid makes available. I wish I had the time to do cool edits and awesome tunes. As is, I'm sitting on a ton of footage I need to just edit and get out. Thanks for watching! :)

@@RandomProjectswithSam Please just leave the music out if you're not going to fine-tune with editing software. It severely interfered with the parts where you say something and besides that, it was just bloody annoying. I quit looking after just minute or so and looked for someone else's video.

@@jakke1975 Thanks for your comment! I am getting this sentiment a lot for this video. I truly regret deleting the original footage making a re-edit impossible. If I make another fiberglass boat I'll pay more attention to the audio. I do have a 3D printed jet-boat episode(s) coming up where I'll be more judicious with the audio.

@@RandomProjectswithSam Thanks. I truly appreciate people putting useful content online so others can learn from it, but I also get increasingly annoyed by people not paying attention to audio. There's an estimated 130 million people living with ASD in the world who have real trouble dealing with loudness, noisiness and sounds that do not fit in the environment. It really creates a sudden stress that makes them run away from such situations.... probably why I responded a bit harshly, sorry for that. I'll be watching out for that video, even though my interest was really learning how to create a mold for a hull. I'm more looking to make my own DIY fibreglass boat, a small one but not a model.
@RandomProjectswithSam
@RandomProjectswithSam 2 года назад
@@jakke1975 I can relate regarding the noisiness. A lot of the reason I have to put music on in my videos is because I usually have two kids running around yelling / laughing / carrying-on. By the end of the day I am spent and usually just sit in my quiet workshop. Nonetheless, I watched a ton of videos in preparation for the boat. I don't think my method was optimal... It was fast and relatively inexpensive but I dont think it would scale very well. I think to make anything much larger, the mold should probably be made out of fiberglass. I also had issues because I didn't seal the wood used for the box around the mold. Over-time the wood warped and bowed. Personally, I've always wanted to make one of those miniature Americas Cup-style monohull sailboats you sit in with just your head popping-out where the cockpit usually is. I'd try to make that mold out of fiberglass.

music sucks. makes it hard to hear what seems like a well presented, knowledgable video. What the hell makes creators think we want to experience their questionable music?
@RandomProjectswithSam
@RandomProjectswithSam Год назад
Would you rather hear children screaming? I was heavy on the music because there was a ton of background noise. A lot of people don't like the the audio but I tossed the original footage so cant re-edit. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt regarding my knowledge. As with everything its a learning experience; I know now to go with less background audio.

ya, about a toss up with screaming kids. On second thought, did that, done with that... well, at least it isn't german techno-pop.
