watched again and found it very informative. thanks. the info and some pics were good. I'm been researching the fiber hdmi for an a/v job and could not find a video to cover as much as you were able to do. doing electronics since the 70's so I've seen alot come and go. long way from radio shack days. lol. The other videos out there are all still confusing and plagued with mis-information. From other videos It's my understanding the fiber is only used for the audio. Yet we need a solution for longer video runs over hdmi. I've been using the hdmi/cat5 extenders for years, but looking for some better options. I thought the fiber hdmi would be it. now not so sure. I'll be checking back on your channel.

I just bought a 50 ft optical HDMI cable for $69 dollars, so it didn't take too long to be cheap enough for home use. And that was for a 48gbps cable, if I only wanted 18gbps I could have gotten it for $30. While 50 ft is doable with a regular HDMI cable, I plan on having wall plates and an additional 6ft copper HDMI cable on either side which would further reduce the signal strength.

Wow, long time getting to the point, which was sorta glossed over at the end. Anyway, if you are calling an HDMI to Ethernet converter a Balun that is not correct, the term is short for Balanced/Unbalanced referring to a device that converts a discreetly wired multi conductor data cable (balanced) to a coaxial cable (Unbalanced) or visa-versa. Both an HDMI cable and an Ethernet cable are both discreetly wired multi conductor data cables, so there is no balunning going on there, and I don't think there such a term as a Balbal, it's just a media converter.

I'm running 2 large floor standers a large centre, 2 side surrounds and 2 rear surrounds and a large sub. My AV is on the far opposite side of a large room to where my TV/SkyQ box is. Due to this I have always run my sound through a 15m optical lead. After seeing a few different videos on the subject though I am probably not getting the full sounds from my viewing, how can this be rectified without having to move the AV near the TV which will also bring with it a nightmare of rewiring all the speakers. To set up the AV and speakers I had to temporarily run a long hdmi lead directly across the room to join the AV and TV. Which means every time I want to adjust the speaker set up or AV settings I have to stretch the thick hdmi lead out again.

@TechManPat
@TechManPat Год назад
Unlikely, fibre optic cables can withstand extreme heat and cold, you will be fine, but the plastic housing could be an issue. If normal HDMI doesn't melt then the Fibre one wont.
@phweakwilled
@phweakwilled 21 день назад
Fibre cables contain electronics in the connectors which could be more heat sensitive than simple copper pins in copper cable. However I doubt a projector HDMI connector would get that hot as it would fry its own electronics too.

I use a 12 metre HDMI cable. Xbox is fine. Satellite box is fine. Blu Ray player flickers. Sometimes only flickers on the menu screen and once the disc starts it settles down. But I think it’s an issue because of the distance. I changed from an Onkyo amp to a Denon a few years back and the issue stopped. I’ve just upgraded my amp and went back to an Onkyo and it’s doing it again on the Blu Ray player. Sometimes there was no picture at all but sound. Sometimes nothing. Sometimes just flickering. Wondering if I should upgrade to a fibre optic cable or just upgrade the Blu Ray player 🤔

One thing to note; being fiber optic cable you need to watch the bending of the cable or you will have light loss. Also the the Fiber HDMI cable requires 5v, that is available from the HDMI port. There are some instances as the length increases that you may need to use a voltage inserter, which supplies a constant 5v to the cable, and is inserted between the cable and the HDMI input. Also note you pay for what you get! Don't cheap on on your cables.

@Khans0120
@Khans0120 3 года назад
@@Natza09 its directional meaning that one end of the optical HDMI cable has a booster chip stuffed into the tip to turn the digital signals into light beams. That chipped end then would be going into port of the source outputting the signal, but if you're upgrading to next gen consoles the optical cables are still worth it because they are less prone to interference from other sources and if the standard "high speed cables" with the consoles are of cheap quality(which they typically are to save money) the upgrade will be worth it in the long run regardless of the fact since these AOC HDMI's can be bought on Amazon for $15 a piece at bare minimum for 10 feet and at that price what do you have to lose? $15 is nothing in comparison to spending $500+ on a next generation console and games to go along with it. I bought one for my One X and in comparison to the image while using the standard cable which came with the One X, I did notice things like better black levels and colors with a bit more depth plus better HDR imagery. So by seeing the difference I came to the conclusion that either the One X 7 foot cable isn't capable of delivering the full 18Gbps throughput or that the cable was starting to show its age as it introduced artifacts into the final rendering by the TV

OH my god. So many missinformation. Fiber HDMI is a nightmare for anyone who worked in AV industry. All serious companies use AVoIP (extenders via Cat cable). HDMI fiber have often problem with reliable edid/HPD resulting in no signal. You will need external power for 4K content usually. You should use it only for Point-to-Point connection, otherwise you wont get 4K60Hz, you will get into "HDMI no signal" loop etc. And about copper HDMI - 15m?! 5m with certified HDMI 2.0 cable at best. Everything more is usually fail at 4K60.
