This video demonstrates the start to finish for air layering a ficus elastica plant. This is a method to grow roots while the plant is still attached to the mother plant before you make the prune to propagate.

I love air-layering! It's more full proof and I find it's faster! I know some people use perlite to air layer but haven't tried that yet. I also can't stand spagnum. I recently air-layered my monstera and it turned out great. I chopped my ficus elastica Tineke because it seemed to not grow and just stuck the top in leca and they turned into established plants! I didn't even think about air layering it, but I think I'll try that next time! So fun experimenting with plants! 🙂

Thanks for watching Jasmine. I really liked this method of propagation and really should have too much difficulty since it has already been rooted in soil. I have a rhaphidophora decursiva currently airlayering as well so stay tuned for that!

I don’t know why it never crossed my mind that you could air layer with soil🤔 I’ve only ever seen it done with moss but if you can prop in soil why couldn’t you air layer! Great video and thanks for opening up my eyes lol 👀💚

Nice video. Thank you for posting. I’m surprised that you cut it with so few roots. Thought you would have waited for more roots before cutting it. I’m interesting in seeing how the cutting progresses after being cut for the mother plant.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
I think it will do well in a larger pot. It really didn't really have much more room to grow in the little container. I will keep everyone posted! Thanks for watching!

I believe if you propagate on the lower, older trunk it should work as well as rhe younger trunk coz you'd be peeling the bark anyway. That's how they multiply ficus elastica trees back home. These grow like actual trees everywhere. Great video, Jeff. 👏

Great video. I've never seen an air layer being done on that type of plant. I would suggest putting the rooting hormone above the cut in the bark rather than directly on it.

@@EverythingPlants it may help with the issue where part of the trunk reverted. It also may not because air layering is tricky business.

Great video Jeff! How often did you need to water the air layering? When it dries out or keep it moist? Going to try this method.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Hey Angela. I didn't have to water at all over the two months. This container kept the humidity in and did its job. I have another airlayering project going and it looks like that soil is getting slightly dry so I'll have to add a bit of water in there.

I air layered my monstera albo, still haven’t worked up the courage to cut it tho
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
That one would make me nervous but the good thing with airlayering aroids is you don't have to make any cuts, just add soil around aerial roots. How long have you been rooting yours? I am currently airlayering a rhaphidophora decursiva and it has roots already.

This was super helpful! I have a Ficus Burgundy that was getting way too tall. I was scared to death to cut it but I did and put the top in water. I wanted to layer it like this but was so afraid I’d mess it up and kill the plant. It’s been about a week and I haven’t seen any roots starting. I didn’t know if something was wrong because when I root Pothos this way they are fully ready to pot in two weeks. I guess Ficus must take longer. I am saving this so next time I can try this method. Does the milky sap in the water cause any problems? Thanks so much. 💚🌱🌿🪴💚
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Ficus do take a long time to root....usually around 2 months. I have never had any issue with the sap in the water, but maybe change it out after a week or so. These typically root well in water so don't worry too much!
