CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As part of the wedding festivities, the men perform a traditional bottle dance.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1971)
Cast: Roy Durbin, Ken Robson, Robert Stevenson, Lou Zamprogna
Director: Norman Jewison
Producers: Norman Jewison, Patrick J. Palmer, Walter Mirisch
Screenwriters: Sholom Aleichem, Joseph Stein

I love the cinematography of this film--for which it won a well deserved oscar--but if I had to pick a favorite moment it's the first couple of "steps" they take after kneeling. The way the camera moves in sync with them is mesmerizing and brings a completely new level of engagement to the audience. Love it.

I was 9 and in the orchestra pit with my dad in the West End run of this. When they come in and break up the wedding someone hit a pillow and a billion feathers landed on me my dad and the sax player. He couldnt get the feathers out of his bell but because i had tiny hands i could and he was screaming at me to get them out quick cos he had a solo coming up. We just made it in time. Afterwards i was helping my dad pack up and some members of the cast came up. The leading lady (Golda) - i cant remember her name she was very well known- took one look at me and burst into hysterical laughter. Without saying a word she picked the biggest and loveliest flower from her boquet, gave it to me and walked off. I treasured that flower and pressed it but it got lost over the years. . It was one of the strangest things that happened to me sitting in the pit from being about 3- 10.
