CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tevye (Topol) dreams of fabulous wealth.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.
CREDITS:

This was my wife's best movie of all time. I can probably count more than 100 time she watched it in our 42-year marriage. She made me watch it with her a couple times and it grew on me! I wanted to tell my wife that he died yesterday but she already knows because she is up there with him in heaven because she passed away 10 months ago. When I saw this on the news that he died I cried so hard. God bless them both.

We used to sing this during school days 1975 and became my favourite song... used to sing this when walking to school, college, work.. dream because we were simple folks had to work and go to college in the evening, difficult times But even now I sing as I'm not still rich no money to spend etc. But. I am very happy with family. And I feel this is richness.

3:07 making such dramatic, yet effective, use of the first 3 notes of that Phrygian Dominant Scale!! That Augmented 2nd is so deliciously defining!!! Love it!!

In the 1980's as a little child in primary school, our teacher Mrs Lempert (and one of the best teachers i ever had), put this on for us during one assembly, and i remember it even to this day. We used to emulate this song in the playground :D RIP Mr Topol

If I were a rich man lyrics: [TEVYE] (spoken) Oh Lord, you made many, many poor people. I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor, but it's no great honor either. So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune? If I were a rich man Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum All day long I'd biddy biddy bum If I were a wealthy man I wouldn't have to work hard Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum If I were a biddy biddy rich Idle-diddle-didle-didle man I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen Right in the middle of the town A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below There would be one long staircase just going up And one even longer coming down And one more leading nowhere, just for show I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks For the town to see and hear Squawking just as noisly as they can And each loud *bird noises* Would land like a trumpet on the ear As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man" Oy, If I were a rich man Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum All day long I'd biddy biddy bum If I were a wealthy man I wouldn't have to work hard Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum If I were a biddy biddy rich Idle-diddle-didle-didle man I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife With a proper double-chin Supervising meals to her heart's delight I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock Oy, what a happy mood she's in Screaming at the servants, day and night *Screaming* The most important men in town would come to fawn on me They would ask me to advise them Like a Solomon the Wise "If you please, Reb Tevye..." "Pardon me, Reb Tevye..." Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes Ya-da-dee-da-da, Ya-da-dee-da And it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong When you're rich, they think you really know

Today is the 32nd anniversary of my brothers death . This was his favourite song as a little boy. He loved the 3 staircases and the biddy biddy bum . I write this with tears in my eyes thinking of his chubby little legs pretending to claim stairs and dancing like Topol. ❤❤
