CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tevye (Topol) and Golde (Norma Crane) grow wistful at their daughter's wedding.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.

Motels smile at the end just melts my heart. You can tell he has true love for Tzietl. He doesn’t want a woman to just raise the kids and take care of the house. He genuinely loves her. ❤️❤️

Seeing Tevyes face 0:54 when Motel puts on the ring always gets me. If it hadn’t occurred that his daughter was now a woman, it did now. Such a beautiful scene. I just finished a high school production of this show at one of the greatest high schools in the country (I was Perchik) and Chaim Topol, had died on our opening night. It was a very emotional show and the memory of Topol will forever live on

I love the way Tzeitel clutches that same, simple bunch of lavender that Yosel gave her when they got engaged. It truly captures the depth of their simple, uncomplicated love. It's these little details that make this movie a true love epic.

I felt terrible for Lazar. Being lonely for so long, then his new bride is taken away at the last minute and given to another man. Tzeitel is much happier with Motel though, so that's a better outcome.

It’s important to remember that good films inspire directors to bring it back to forefront and remind people of how great source material. Will they miss the mark? Probably but I can’t question their motivations. I would love a current version or another bway revival since anti Semitism runs rampant with a lack of positive Jewish representation. I know growing up with this film helped keep me from falling into that pit of hate.

Until today this still remains one of my favorite movies. I chose this song for my daughters wedding and it still brings tears to my eyes. I would love to watch this movie over again but I only have it on VHS and unfortunately I don’t have the video machine anymore

Director Norman Jewish, Editors Anthony Gibbs & Robert Lawrence, Cinematographer Oswald Morris and music adaptor John Williams achieve a quiet genius here, taking what is (or could be) an incredibly static scene and imbuing every Fram with energy and emotion (with no small contribution from the actors and extras, of course). So many details: Schprintze and Bielke like statues, the girls on the stairs with the wax of their candles melting on the bannister, the light thrown onto the little boy's face at 2:43, Lazar Wolf's shimmering anger and grief...and so much more.

Sunrise Sunset, such a beautiful and moving song. I never get tired of watching Fiddler on the Roof and the beautiful music. Years ago, I saw the play at the FL Tupperware Center, starring Theodore Bikell. The words are more poignant, of course, these days, with the terrible and brutal war between Israel and Gaza. I prayed to God for peace, in this region. 🙏😢

Surprisingly, I actually first heard of this song in The Lion King 1/2. Also, really appreciate that this song has different variations for LGBTQ+ weddings. Edit: Say what you will of Lazar Wolf, he sure is ultimately accepting of all this despite his initial disdain, especially to Tevye. Oh, and he sure has that "Awesome McCoolname".

The line: "they look so natural together, just like two newlyweds should be" is very powerful, especially now; today, in these times, when so much has been turned upside down and done in a unholy, un-natural way. Why? It is their tradition, regardless on how the 21century looks upon older males and younger brides, that is how they were accustomed to. he was promised by the dad, plus was already highly involved thanks to yente. He is an older lonly person trying to find love before his time is up, he was kinda backstabbed by a slightly more progessive and yet frowned upon individual. I feel bad for him. he deserves love to.
