Very sad day for me.. i grew up in Penketh and these were part of my everyday.. should have kept them as part of Penketh / Widnes. History gone in 10 seconds..
Yeah I went down there myself today really early to get good spot and still didn't see it, its frustrating because normally you can't miss fiddlers ferry in Halton no matter where you are you can see them haha... at least we have one more chance with the others
This power station has been in my life since i was born my grandad done some work in there we would spend hours talking about it when he came to visit i am saddened by this i really am absolute waste just like the other person said history gone and it will be forgotten for ever the new kids will never even know it ever existed and lets all remember this power station was used in the winter in the end for use to help the power demand in the winter so to demolish it is a silly mastake rip fiddlers ferry i will never forget 😢
Grammar is not only the word for your grandpa’s wife, you know By the way, it was decommissioned completely in 2020, so it certainly wasn’t used this winter
I work on The Railway and The number of Coal Trains that we used to send into there was just astronomical, most of it was imported into Liverpool docks. It certainly was a busy place and gave a lot of people employment.
@@pauldurdin6163if that is so! You are complicit too as unless you live off grid and you are typing this comment on a none electric powered wooden PC on a you have used the power some where some how....who has blood on there hands now😮
@@frederiquerijsdijkMuch of my career has been in power stations, coal and nuclear. There have been good times and bad times, but they have been a major part of my life, so yes, I am sad to see the demolition.
Padgate also here Peter.. . weather made me stay in bed too... me and my daughter was going to go up to Fox Covert but glad i didnt freeze to death now
they started by deactivating the electrics near the first 4 towers, then went through with demolition, i can only assume they’re gonna run the same course with the other 4
It really is a sad moment. Could see them clearly in my flat in Denton Manchester When i lived there years ago. But times are changing and like it or not we do have to move with them.
This is very short sigthed. When it is realise renewables (wind, solar) cannot supply the electricity we need, they will be rebuilding these cooling towers
There is zero chance of a developed European country returning to burning coal to create electricity. Zero. Gas maybe, coal, no. Nobody would be prepared to mine it in this country, it’s a barbaric job which led to early and painful death. And the cost of importing massive ship fulls of rocks - fiscal and environmental - is simply mental You probably think steam engines are making a comeback
Or you could just build hybrid adiabatic condensers, which are 10% the size of these towers and more effective at cooling, commonly used at CCGT stations.
Times have changed, Peter. Coal is a relic of the past these days. It'll only ever be used again to rebuild after a complete societal collapse, which most likely won't happen.
Great work on the demolition but a disgusting waste of engineering and architectural history. It should have been preserved and kept for if we need it in an emergency. A shameful waste lack of respect for history and lack of foresight. The sky line won’t be the same again and no reminder of the once great coal areas of Lancashire which has been a significant part of the areas history and existence. Now I suppose someone can make a profit and knock up and other poorly build housing estate with another Tesco express and another Kebab shop. What a waste.
It's a sad shame. But there are many stations like this one. So nothing engineering to note about it. It's more sentimental for us that grew up with it in the back drop.
Wow. We live in NE Cheshire and if we walk up the hill behind our house we can see FF on the horizon if the weather is clear. We knew it was coming down today but sadly the weather was too misty to see it. I'm not sure blowing down these old coal-powered plants is a good idea. Without them on standby we could find ourselves in trouble.
Utter disgrace. Just like the foolish demolition of nearly all the beautiful brick chimneys loved by Lowrey, that used to cover the landscape. These cooling towers were iconic monuments - industrial art. We are living through very foolish and naive times.
I wonder what the workers who toiled in those mills think about that 😁 There's enough old chimney's around the North to give a thumbs up to the past you don't and can't keep them all
