Several on the channel have asked why, instead of 19...Nb8 (covering the d7 square), Karjakin didn't play a rook to the d-file. Let's take a quick look. 19...Rcd8 20 Rd7 - attacking the b7 pawn. If 20...Na5 21 Bxf7+ Rxf7 22 Rxd8+ wins a pawn. If 20...b6 21 Rc7 Rxd1 22 Kxd1 Na5 23 Bd5 dominates (or 23 Rxa7). 19...Rfd8 20 Rd7 - attacks f7. 20...Rxd7 21 Rxd7 Nd8. Black is not losing a pawn but is completely passive and White can start the kingside squeeze with 22 h4. Conclusion: by this stage, Karjakin's position was already difficult, and whichever way Black chooses leaves him with a difficult position. Improvements need to be found earlier.

Carlsen stood by watching when they were finishing this game and when Karjakin resigned he instantly approached Duda and shook his hand. Great sportsmanship & great tournament by Magnus and of course congratulations to Duda, he has really shown what he is made of and played beautiful chess. Thanks again for the immaculate coverage Dani, I do hope you find time to cover Carlsen -Fedoseev, it was an absolutely crushing game. Have a good one.

Ke2! was the most interesting move of the game -which is damning with faint praise I guess lol.

Kings weakness is that he doesn't get very excited unless it's a Carlsen game ....
@Cyst11
@Cyst11 3 года назад
@@je9625 Strange take on an ellipses..... and also not a fair or representative comment on GM King's content. He gets plenty excited in a bunch of games, as well as doing the constant work of covering important games with a certain depth and clarity. Personally, neither Carlsen nor Duda are my cup of tea - but I very much appreciate the coverage and there are usually aspects of the games that I like.

@@Phurngirathaana Duda would beat Capablanca, but not because his a better player, but because theory has advanced a lot since the days of Capablanca. If you analize Capablancas games you see that he's weakness is dinamic chess.

Excellent video, amazing game. Duda may some day replace Magnus as WC.

Great coverage - one of those strange positions where it looks ok from the black side but it's lost - highlighted by the long term weakness of f7. Reminds me of a Magnus game.
@paulgoogol2652

Yes it is difficult to understand but Mr King pointed out that is the effect of having opposite color bishops but blacks bishop had no target. I'd like to know why black didn't trade rooks on the d file. Too much pressure? Got to look again.

When a gm says the king is perfectly safe on e2 and I as a viewer just nod knowing that I'd be in a mating net within 5 more moves.
@Cyst11

@Justin Vaughan Yeah, without any engine analysis - block with the rook, queen has to go back or is relegated to an awful position and you've wasted a tempo. Not sure what you're working out.

Why did black give away the d-file. He could have played rook d8 on more than one occasion. Okay, f7 is weak, but if white goes for it black has chances for counterplay against the white king.

I didn't like Nb8 by Karjakin. Instead, Rfd8 would have forced the exchange of rooks and neutralized Duda's powerful rooks on the d file

Instead of Nb8, why not simply Rcd8? How can white avoid the trade of rooks ?
@gregtechno506
@gregtechno506 3 года назад
Rd7, threatens to take b7 and ties black down to defending the f7 pawn, the only possible continuation for black is to take the rook on d7, allowing the second white rook to enter on d7 which forces the Nd8 move and black's pieces are paralysed.

Great game, but basically opening prep. Once you hit top 5 people spend more time countering your repertoire, so something else is needed. Unclear whether Duda has enough of the something else. Seems younger people did better this WC because they improved under the radar of others preparing against them.
