Daniel King is who you turn to when you want more, much more than just entertainment. He will not be the first to upload within minutes of the actual handshake, but, unlike on channels with sadly many more subscribers, who even openly declare that they are clicking through the moves for the first time, at PowerPlay you get well thought through analysis, eloquently presented. This is why I think this is the definitive chess channel on YT and the reason I choose to pay the monthly Patreon.

I followed this game on Sesse yesterday full of wild swings. Congratulations to Duda and Karajakin a magnificent effort. I think we can see that the only player who can beat Carlsen is himself. Your analysis made this complicated game more understandable. Thanks Daniel and keep up the good work.

I didn't understand where and why Carlsen went wrong, till this video. Once again, Daniel explains the thinking behind GM moves so clearly. Duda did to Carlsen, what Carlsen had done to so many others. Snatch victory from a drawn position by probing and shuffling around. I saw Carlsen leave the board hurriedly after the game. He must have rushed to the computer to see where he went wrong. Fresh blood in the candidates!

This is one of the worst games I saw (live) from Carlsen, even that Duda also blundered several times in the endgame (1st Kf8?), there is hope ppl ;-)

Some people are already proclaiming the end of the Carlsen Era. What is your stance on this topic @PowerPlayChess?

@paulgoogol2652
@paulgoogol2652 3 года назад
Based on a rapid game this assumption is ridiculous. He clearly avoided to show his prep. King said that he usually plays mainlines and this variation is well known to be bad. Duda on the other hand played nearly flawlessly. For a rapid game anyway.
@pawn4129

@@paulgoogol2652 I share your opinion and I am not jumping on this overly sceptical bandwagon. Still, I find it interesting to discuss this question. :)

One bad game, and a rapid-play game at that, and some are proclaiming the end of the Carlsen Era? Cmon... And by the way, that takes nothing away from Duda who created and seized his chance well.
@pawn4129
@pawn4129 3 года назад
@@PowerPlayChess Exactly! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I believe people are announcing the end of the Carlsen Era because he is not the unstoppable force he once used to be (even though he is the clear no. 1 without any competition). Also, never have I doubted Duda's skill and talent, especially since his victory against Magnus in the Caro-Kann. :)

You're famous for playing/propagating the Najdorf, but would you really consider 3. Bb5 such a side line? I mean, it used to be Carlsen's main reply like 6, 7 years ago and lots of other people played it with some Maroczky like set up in mind. Also, it should be pointed out that if Black ever trades bishops "in a bad way" and goes after the b6 pawn for example, I think there is f5 and e6 next move, no matter what, once Black has taken on b6, and White queens and wins despite being a couple pawns down. Great video :)
@ShamaiOfer
@ShamaiOfer 3 года назад
instead of 47..Rd3?! the simple 47...Rxa3 48.Rxd5 Rd3 and with the a3 pawn gone this looks like a simple win. Anyhow, this ending is with an extra pawn compared to the game continuation.

11:37 in this position white could also play Ke3, which defends the weakness on f4. Then white basically continues shuffling the bishop between c5 and d4, because as long as this bishop is on this diagonal black's bishop cannot invade and a3 is safe. I don't think there is even much black can try in this position. b6 would stop white's shuffling on d4/c5 but shuts down black's bishop as well and once black plays b4 white can continue shuffling on d4/c5 again. Maybe black could try bringing the King to b5, but this looks very slow

I don’t understand A) why Magnus went into a position with bad bishop versus good bishop, and B) why he didn’t exchange those bishops when he had the option. I know that Steinitz thought he could beat God, but that was when he was a very old man. So I think it’s too early for Magnus to start believing he can win such positions just because he’s Magnus.
@mauropetrolo1236

I cannot see Magnus allowing Bc3 in this bishop ending. Magnus did you meet Simone Biles recently?
@luigi777aa
@luigi777aa 3 года назад
Perhaps it would have been worthy to explain that Bd3 (at the place of Bc2 - the last move of the game) would have been losing due to the storm of white pawns. Anyway, thanks a lot, Mr King.

uncharacteristic of carlsen to force a position like that.

Excellent play by Duda and he took the advantage of Magnus playing for a win in a drawn position. Whites moves looked so artificial and on the other hand blacks play was very natural. Also I did not see how White could have dreamed of a real attack when black was simply dominating the c-file and all the pieces on excellent positions.

It takes two to make a game of chess, if a player makes it interesting they can lose, as with Fedoseev. You need interesting players, like Nepo did, to get in the candidates tournament to make it entertaining.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Duda is champion material and he's strong in all time controls. I can't imagine Magnus losing to Ian, but I can definitely imagine him losing to Duda, if Duda powers through the candidates, of course.
@Electronite1978
@Electronite1978 3 года назад
This was pretty much self inflicted by Magnus. Going "all in" or for a win in a drawn position. Magnus evaluated the position incorrectly and Duda exploited Magnus's artificial play superbly.

This might be controversial as I've only been following chess again since Nov/Dec '20 but I can't say Magnus has blown me away as a superstar champion. Have I just picked up at a fairly ordinary period of his career? He occasionally wins a tournament but nothing like the dominance I expected, given his reputation. Does Ian have a chance to topple him?
@maciektrybuszewski9964
@maciektrybuszewski9964 3 года назад
He may be bored. Nothing surprising in this. He still has the career, because this is the profession he has chosen, but in this age things no longer amaze you.
@starrynight1657
@starrynight1657 3 года назад
Unlikely. A long classical chess match is different than World Cup knockout. And if the title goes to tiebreaks think it's best of 4 (not 2 as here). Of course if he's off his game it's possible, but I expect him prepared. Covid has shaken up chess, with a great deal of blitz and less classical. That may have impacted form.

It’s obvious you haven’t watched chess for much time. Just have a look at Carlsen’s results from 2019 and you’ll see the superstar champion you were looking for. This last year hasn’t been great for him but I think if he takes the WCC seriously he’ll show his class.

Duda was pressing Magnus all the games (in first game easy draw with black), and fully deserved for victory in this match. I think, Daniel King should be more objective.
