Hullo! I don't if you ended up mentioning it, but during setup each city gets a Garrison and a fortification (page 6 of the rulebook). That frees up Ney to move initially, but it makes taking other cities that much harder.

Having now played this campaign myself (and lost due to not protecting Berlin enough) I've noticed a mistake in set up. Each city on the map should be allocated a fortification and a garrison. French if French-only-occupied, enemy fortifications and garrisons in other cities. This makes the campaign much harder. You can't just stroll into empty cities or 'envelop' a single weak force. Every city will have a defensive force of at least 9 (Fortification 4 + Garrison 5). To avoid the defeat conditions you need to spend the majority of your supply points in the first two turns on forced marches so that you can reach Warsaw with a sizeable enough army. This is what makes FC:N a good game - each campaign needs some kind of thought-out strategy and not all campaigns can be approached in the same way.

I've finished watching. And despite the many posts pointing out rules corrections I have thoroughly enjoyed this playthrough. It has inspired me to get out my own copy and play through a couple of campaigns - making rules mistakes in both! (There's a lot to remember and some rules get forgotten or mis-remembered until too late.) Hopefully some of my comments are helpful to other viewers. Thank you for posting this video!

at 2:53 - setting up a battle. If the French forces are intending simply to hold and wait for the enemy to come near, then a) Morale is not a good choice of Insight because inc/cav forces automatically fail shock rolls if they are in their own approach or reserve and b) the forces are better in line (allowing them to 'Fire') without a roll rather than in column (allowing them to 'March' without a roll)

at 2:47:50 - one (damaged) unit remaining, one French battle plan to be selected, one opportunity missed. The battle plan to select is 'Prepare' placed on the foremost cavalry. This will allow that cavalry to act before the enemy. A simple 'March' order will do it. Cavalry advances. Enemy automatically fails the shock check for two reasons - it is an inf/cav in column and it is an inff/cav in it's own approach or reserve. No-one escapes.

Flank Battle Plan: (at 34 mins) - Edward says the distance is "Only 2 or more". Where does the "or more" come from? It says "Only 2" - i.e. the Battle Plan will not activate if the closest enemy is at distance 0, 1, 3, 4 etc. It will only activate when the closest enemy is at a precise distance of 2. (And if I remember the rules correctly, any unit with this Battle Plan and not at the correct distance from the enemy simply does nothing. Given that the enemy act first, it can be a bit of a gamble as to whether the Flank manoeuvrer will be a master-stroke or a dud.

I've reached 50 mins now and Chris has been trying to tell you in the comments what I've just said above, but you haven't registered. It can't be easy tracking the comments and playing the game and teaching the game all at the same time.

Overall a very well done play through. Thanks! I think at about the 3 hour 7 minute mark you had one of your infantry execute a battle plan but they are in the reserve region, which means they cannot attack. I don't see any exceptions to that rule in the rule book, so I think that was done in error.

2:55 I feel like you missed a trick holding. Your troops are just so much better. Play a charge, a flank, an engage, and then just a march on the last cavalry (march on cav gives two advances, not one). Enemy generally advances, fills their approach and has like 4 in front. You trigger 3 shock rolls which they auto-fail, then die because they can't retreat. Then follow up with the engage which gets at least one shot at the potential remaining guy. Had the potential to remove 4 enemy in your first turn, assuming you survived the counter-fire, and assuming enemy battle plans didn't cause chaos.

Round about 1:34 mins - when chasing routed troops don't forget the 'March' battle plan allows cavalry to advance twice, not just once.

Another useful tactic using the March battle plan is when the enemy is distance 1 from the cavalry. The cavalry can advance, check for shock, then retreat back to safety.

One way in which you made the game harder is by randomly assigning Battle Plans to the enemy. I have made a careful study of the rules to see exactly what points I can make meaningful (bad) choices on behalf of the enemy. For example, when enemy orders tell a group of forces to advance towards a city or a French force, there are certain priorities - first to the closest, then to the weakest - but if there is a tie (e.g. two equally weak forces or two shortest routes) then you as player get to choose. When it comes to assigning Battle Plans, you are meant to draw one at a time and assign it before drawing the next. But within the imposed restriction that it must go to a force with the highest skill level, you can assign it to any force *anywhere* on the battlefield. In other words, with multiple options you can place it where it does the least harm. Sometimes this makes for a tricky decision. Maybe you have two BPs to draw and only two forces (of equal level), say one at range 1 and the other at range 2. Placing your first drawn BP on the closest may not be ideal, but if you place it on the furthest then the nearest one may get a worse (for you) BP. Part of the fun is trying to control and predict as much as possible the enemy activations (though the die-rolls mean you can never be sure what will happen.)

I think that the rules mean that you have to first chose the (highest skill) enemy unit to assign a battle plan to before you draw the actual battle plan. So you chose the force first and the battleplan after. This should prevent the player from placing enemy battleplans where it does the least harm.

Thanks for the gameplay! Question: Do you remove INSIGHT after you activate it and use it?
@mathmethman
@mathmethman 4 года назад
At 3:04 - agonising over whether you want your infantry to implement the 'Engage' battle plan or not - My understanding of the rules is that if a force has a BP assigned to it (whether French or enemy) then it *must* execute that BP (beginning with checking for activation of course.) The only exception is if the force is in melee and then any BP other than Square or Prepare is discarded. If the force has no BP (because it never had one assigned or because it was discarded because of melee), *only then* can one of the default BP be chosen. Giving instructions to your forces is often a bit of a gamble. You might instruct them to do something which in the event turns out to be a really bad move. That's war for you. Also, I don't believe there is a 'Hold' BP (which Edward keeps deciding to do) but no big deal because Pivot can be chosen and the force put in the same line/column formation as it already is. Call it 'hold' if you are not a pedant like me.

various melee attacks round about 3:15 - you remembered to add +3/+3 to French attacks in melee, but you forgot to apply the same bonuses when the enemy were attacking. There should have been two further hits on French forces (which would have defeated them all and left Napoleon alone - and hence game ends in 'Defeat')
