I've found something rather interesting in pruning pines in the landscape here in Knoxville. Loblolly pines can be induced to push out a second flush as well and because they grow so vigorously I've been able to get very dense ramification in a very short time. I think even possibly more quickly than with Japanese black pine. They also transplant into pure pumice really easily in the spring.
@BandiHegedus
@BandiHegedus 4 года назад
The question is whether this is reproducible in a container, and whether it will happen every year. Even scots pines are capable of pushing a 2nd flush when they are in the ground, and are super vigorous. Move them in a pot - nada. Sometimes JBP and JRP might not push a 2nd flush if they are not vigorous enough in a pot.

I'm super curious to know how do you go about bringing a tree that has grown in the field for a few years to a pot. I imagine the root system it builds over that period is extensive. How do you know how much to cut and still keep the tree healthy?
