"Hey Dad, can we have a catch?".... seriously, should be titled: "how to make grown men cry," it's not even fair. I, like too many others, lost my father before I realized that he wasn't a monolith but a human being.... years later as a father myself I can finally see just how beautiful and wonderful that man was... I only wish I could tell him that I see him for the amazing person he was, and to thank him for all he's given me and all the dreams he had to sacrifice for the so many that depended on him. Just the thought of having a moment with my dad in his prime, before life had beaten him down makes my heart swell with empathy and admiration.

The great Burt Lancaster & James Earl Jones, lend a element of elegance to this movie.
@blaseblah204

'The Voice' is listed in the credits as portrayed by "Himself". The Voice is actually Ray's. It's his inner voice that's telling him, driving him towards what to do, to ultimately ease his own pain from long ago. It's a metaphor/message to all of us in the audience to listen to our inner voices, so we can have the courage to pursue our dreams. This was the great Burt Lancaster's (Doc Graham) final film. His character was actually a real player, Archibald Moonlight Graham, who only got to play 1 game in the majors, and never got to bat.

One Father's Day, I selected "Field of Dreams" as the family movie. It was an interesting, magical evening. The fact that this movie continues to influence/touch people is something wonderful. Both at the movie site Baseball field and the Major League-level field built nearby.

Playing catch with my father is one of my favorite memories from childhood, and like many American men, I bawl my eyes out every time I see the ending because I'd give just about anything to play catch with my father just one more time.

I relate to this on a few levels. My Dad was a baseball lover all his life. He played for 20 yrs on his company softball team. He coached my older brothers' Little League and Babe Ruth teams. He would watch any game on tv, no matter the teams from MLB to girls college softball to Little League. Like Costner's character, he was 40 yrs old by the time I was born, and by the time I was 12 I was so sick of hearing about baseball that I looked to playing ANYTHING else...hockey, tennis, golf.. 😀Fortunately he lived a long time so I grew to appreciate him as an adult as well.

The amazing thing about the last ten minutes or so of this movie is how it hits you with one thing, then another, then another, and culminates with "Hey, Dad...want to have a catch?" Most of the reactions show the viewers clearly thought it was over after Doc Graham saved Karin, but that was just the appetizer. I've watched about ten of these reaction videos over the past two days and break down every single time I hear that line. As close to perfection as a movie can come.

This is the one film that breaks me at the end. Not many movies get me crying but this one is the main one that does. At a very young age, when I was about 4 or 5 my dad taught me how to play baseball and we'd play catch many many times. As I got older those games got fewer and far between until we just didn't play catch anymore. We were always close and on good terms, but those games of catch just stopped for whatever reason. My dad passed last August and what I wouldn't give to play one more game of catch with him. In glad you enjoyed the movie.

something I found quite amazing in relation to this movie(and it really IS one of my all-time favourites, which is incredible enough seeing as I'm British and dont really "get" baseball, although I certainly do "get" the sentiment and the magic of this movie)is that when they are talking to the older folks about Doc Graham, who really DID exist, and who actually was as they describe him, those people talking about him are not actors, but real townspeople who knew him and respected him, and they were simply reminiscing about him, and recounting their own personal stories about him, he really was the kindly, generous character they tell about, and you can see how genuine it is as they are talking......that is just a wonderful touch

And, having lost my dad this April it hits just a little harder now. But it is still awesome and amazing and a nearly perfect movie. And James Earl Jones is so awesome in this. "You lied to me!" I've been there 3 times. Every year the league plays a real sanctioned game there. They built a second field on the other side of the corn so as not to disturb the original movie set.

Other movie connections: - Actor Art LaFleur plays White Sox 1st baseman Chick Gandil. He would go on to play the ghost of Babe Ruth in the 1993 film The Sandlot...which also starred James Earl Jones as a former Yankee who played with Ruth. - Frank Whaley who plays young Archie Graham would later portray young Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, which starred Kevin Costner. - Timothy Busfield would later play fictional Minnesota Twins all-star 1st baseman Lou Collins in the 1994 film Little Big League - Here's a stretch: Dwier Brown (who plays John Kinsella) had a minor role in the ice skating movie The Cutting Edge, which starred D.B. Sweeney. ...who portrayed Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out.

Who would pay 8 players from the Chicago White Sox to throw the 1919 world series to the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago was heavily favored to win the series. When the head people of Major League Baseball found out that it was lost on purpose. The 8 men were kicked out of the majors for life. Never would be able to get into Baseball Hall of Fame. The theory has been floated that the Terence Mann character had actually died sometime before Ray knocks on his door to ask Terence to the game and just after being dropped back home; when Ray turns his VW minibus around and Terence is suddenly in his headlights, it isn't Terence standing there, but his ghost. It explains why Terence was invited back into the cornfield. It's foreshadowed earlier by the newspaper report of Terence's father in Baltimore being unable to contact him by phone. I never saw this film when it was first released; I never cared for baseball, so it had no appeal for me. But I've seen it on TV now and several times in reaction videos, and it has become a favorite. I have a hard time thinking of any normal human being not being moved to tears and/or thinking of their dad when Ray finally meets back up with his father on the Field of Dreams. Those who have lost a parent can't help but regret the time cut short with a parent. You did a lovely job keeping up with the story and responding to it honestly. Thank you.

Personally I think the voice was Ray's own subconscious telling him how to call his father back to this world so he could not only ease his father's pain but his own as well. In my mind this is what Shoeless Joe meant at the end when he said "No Ray, it was you." On a related note, the actual identity of the actor who did the voice work is apparently still a mystery... some people say its Costner, some say it's Ed Harris, others say it was the director Phil Robinson.. the actual cast who would know refuse to say😏

Thanks Tara, this was another Fun time today! As promised, here are some suggestions for your Sports Movie Polls. . . (Footballs) "Little Giants / Remember the Titans / The Replacements / The Longest Yard" ('05 Remake preferred) (Baseballs) "Rookie of the Year / A League of Their Own / Angels in the Outfield" ('94 Remake preferred) I can also recommend "Teen Wolf" for Basketball, "Rocky / Real Steel" for Boxing, and "The Mighty Ducks" for Hockey! Oh, and just one more: if you haven't seen "Ice Princess" yet...You really need to. It's about Figure Skating, and it makes even Me cry everytime I watch it!

A theory- maybe Terry Mann has been dead, a ghost like the others, since the middle of the movie. I love this movie- if's so much fun watching Burt Lancaster and James Earl Jones turn on the charisma and sreal every scene they're in.

The book is absolutely wonderful, more detailed and more fantastic than the movie, a Canadian classic.
