From a man who has spent more of his adult life in a sleeping bag than in his bed, he had to learn the best way to spend time in the backcountry. His journey brought goats into his life and he has never looked back.
Meet Marc Warnke. A hunter who specializes in the use of goats, the greatest backcountry animal on the planet. He has been in the industry for over 30 years and is known as the Goat Guy. He sells goats, goat gear, provides goat training, and even offers guided trips into the backcountry with his own personal goats.
Step into Marc's shoes as he gives you an inside look into what gives him the advantage when in the backcountry.
We sat down with Marc for a podcast that you can listen to here:

@@yagami1134 I don't think the goat/big dog niche is active combat, but rather the trecks in between. A robot would be more robust than a goat. Damage to it would probably be more than could be fixed in the field or easily ignored. Goats would be squishy by comparison, but way cheaper and a wrecked goat could become a hearty meal. If you can't fix your expensive pack robot in the field, your gonna have to abandon it.

Haha this happened with my Dad and I. We were hiking in the backcountry and stopped to catch our breath, and we heard this weird jingle coming towards us. It freaked us out because it was like nothing we had ever heard in the country before. Then one by one, five goats carrying packs came out of the trees and passed us with this guy right behind! It was definitely a motivator to keep going and one of my favorite memories while hiking.

My sons have the same philosophy; oddly my daughter doesn't and works 60 or more hours a week. My sons and I want to work to earn enough so we can have time to do what we want. I've said it many times, "I don't live to work, I work to live." Living below my means has given me ample opportunity to spend time doing things I love: hiking, boating, fishing, camping, gardening. We have our own herd of goats. I've always wanted to try them out as pack animals. While I knew goat's milk was good for humans, I didn't know it was that good. Thanks for the wonderful images. 5 am here, been watching mark for a year since we got out first goats. My husband first saw a goat on a neighbors farm and convinced me to add a few to our homestead. Since then i have found goats to be the perfect pet and super easy to train and care for. Mark has convinced me, i may end up only owning goats as they can provide milk and meat for free or super cheap hay at least in comparison to other feed. Pigs can be free if you have space and ability to rotate them through seasonally grown fields. Horses and cows require special feed and hay and many acres. Being such big animals, they eat a lot. When it comes to packing, not needing to carry hay on you for the trip is huge. Being smaller goats that are more agile with toes instead of hooves they can navigate through areas a horse can't.

As in the above case, competent ninja, even if they have accomplished the extraordinary, make no sound, leave no smell and get no fame or honour for their bravery. The results they have brought about look as natural as if they were being created by nature itself. Universally, in spring it is beautiful and trees and plants grow and flowers bloom. In summer it is hot and trees and plants grow luxuriantly. In autumn it is cool and trees and plants turn their colours and the leaves fall. In winter it is cold, snowy and frosty. Trees lose dead leaves and plants return underground. As well as the four seasons, during one day, so many various [and natural] things take place, but nobody knows who is doing these things." -Bansenshukai

I think his preference towards goats is more one of convenience than an actual "like" for them. He chooses to spend 1/2 a year, or more, in areas that are hard to keep a dog, therefore, to lighten his burden, he sought out a four-legged companion that was naturally built for that lifestyle. Dogs have other purposes, and being a pack animal is not one of them. Aside from that, much props to him for living the life he chooses to live, and not trying to adjust his life around his "job".
@ktimmer2

Dogs are very much, naturally pack animals. Just a different type of "pack". Lol! The goats are much more advantageous for his needs, for sure. If you spend any time around goats, it's impossible to not like them. They're hilariously funny to watch at times. Great animals!

I'm a dog owner and definitely disagree with him on the dog bit but I think his reasoning for his relationship with goats is great and makes sense for his mission and purpose. Dogs are a fantastic companion for a whole lot of people. I don't necessarily want to carry so much shit into the back country that I need 10 animals in tow. But I'm also probably doing shorter trips and bringing less shit.

Of course I need no shit walking my pup in the Central Park or back roads. Well, at least I know that one of the dislikes just surfaced.

Great video! Goats are fun. My sister-in-law had fainting goats. They kept us laughing like crazy. 😆 She got my sons each a Nigerian dwarf. They are really sweet. My doctor just took me off of regular dairy and onto goat's milk. I thought it was going to be toi weird. In the past, I'd had goat cheese and that was it. But, damn, the butter they produce is fantastic! The yogurt is great too. It is expensive as Hell though. $16.99 a gallon! The change isn't because I'm allergic. But, he said cows milk can cause inflammation. I was in a head on collision years ago. And he said this should help with the arthritis. Hey, I'll try anything at this point. Too bad goats wont eat people. I'd love to feed the guy that hit me to them. 🤭

Love this video. I appreciate your respect for the elk you shot for food. Goats are incredible animals. I have a dairy goat. The cats dog chickens and pigs all love goat milk. It can save any baby that has lost it's mother too young! I have been wanting to do this for some time. Also, train my goat to pull a cart if hiking becomes too diffucult! I have packed my goat around the yard. She took to it no problem. Where do you get your packing supplies. I agree goats are very low maintenance. I have only camped with horses. Tie out with highlines. Graze with hobbles. Experienced horses do not usually run from danger they stay with the herd or leader. Yes they are higher maintenance but carry much more weight and are much quieter than goats. They would definitely be a plus getting that elk back to camp! If you haven't seen it yet, please watch War Horse
