Fierce Female Initiations: Claiming Authority & Selfhood Through Trials

Mythological Paths to Personal Potential
Myths and fairy tales depict women’s initiation into authority and adulthood. Hades abducted Kore (maiden) into the underworld; Snow White choked on a poisoned apple and lay in stasis; Aphrodite punished forsaken Psyche with arduous tasks. As all were blossoming into the fullness of their beauty and fertility, all were also in thrall to innocence complexes that blinded them to realities of envy, aggression, and power, imaged as rapist, step-mother, and mother-in-law. Women’s initiation into adulthood and authority involves encountering shadow, finding inner fire, taking action, and wielding power. Kore became queen of the underworld; Snow White metabolized the poison and revived; Psyche reclaimed her mate and ascended to Mt. Olympus. Female initiation involves relational trauma and the sacrifice of a naively romantic and other-oriented stance. This mythological pattern points to the potential for finding clear-eyed selfhood, life direction, and the will to achieve goals.
HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"I was playing a concert with a famous elder statesman of bluegrass. We play a funny song about a cat that travels with its owner in a semi-tractor trailer, across the USA. The song begins with me playing the bass and with the cat making some kind of meow. My cat (all grey, yellow eyes, born without a tail) was lying next to me on stage, curled up on top of a stool.v The cat's presence gave me comfort, humor and warmth. At end of song the lights went dark. A spotlight forms above the elder statesman, casting shadows across his features. He turns to me and gets very close to my face. I feel pressure at being the focus of attention. He produces a large stack of cards below his chin and starts showing them to me, one by one. At first the cards and numbers don't make sense. He draws 10 then 13 - maybe he can't guess the numbers my mind is picking. All of a sudden the "trick" begins to work. He picks 24, 48 and 72. He is drawing the cards I’m thinking of and from a very large stack. These numbers are bigger than a deck of playing cards, yet they are similarly designed, quite intricate. I’m shocked, not afraid, that he knows the numbers. The elder smirks a slight, knowing smile."

An important book I found that illustrates the female consciousness process is “ The Women Who Runs With the Wolves”...

Wow what Joseph said about true concious power of feminine sexuality protecting a girl . In comparison to it being something which would make her predisposed for being raped was just liberating to hear , thank u

Amazing conversation and I also agree with Joseph. The feminine sensuality is one of the most powerful tools a woman can know how to use, and I see it as very important and a natural power tool. However, nowadays many women are dragged into the victim "box", suffering - among many other things, repressed sexuality and a traumatic relationship of shame with their own feminine nature. Together with the promiscuity that is now labeled as sexual freedom and being feminine (traditional feminine roles) is a reason for feeling weak or ashamed, when the whole thing goes much deeper than that. But woah... I loved the discussion. I always suffered in finding women to build a good relationship with and I could relate to many things discussed here. Thanks for the work :)

A guy here ( cause this channel and Jung is just spectacular )... I find this particular topic interesting because on my journey I find that I identify with this alot but in the reverse you could say. Using the snow white example it's kinda like instead of getting the poisoned apple i got the sweet apple, because in a sense I was already poisoned, enraged, felt the world was against me and always in this feeling of fight and survival. Where it was said beautifully that "...Come on you can't see that she's trying to kill you..." For me it would be "... Come on you can't see that someone actually loves you/cares about you" Just made me see alot of my own projections and relationships especially with women from a new perspective And I will also add... It's always been weird to me and still is if I'm honest... That from this video women don't have that "drive", or I love how Joseph put it that volatility but not volition. Cause from my perspective, almost ironically, my drive to change my life I got from being "inspired by women" both in terms of relationships with them be it platonic or romantic or just hearing what they go through. I just had a frame that they were better and had it figured out so I was essentially just trying to keep up (happened with men too btw in this regard) And from that same perspective it always struck me as odd when it came up that they didn't "genuinely" heal/change or use their volition. Which lead to some friendship issues on my end. Because me being all naive with my own innocent complex it was weird to hear that something bad had happened to a woman and then several years later I find out she hadn't recovered or even started the process. Again as mentioned, it's venting but then a return to the same. Like this just confirmed that to me that I had wrongfully assumed that they were taking action because again... I cultivated my volition from what I thought women possessed that I didn't not. Very much to say I'm disillusioned but at the same time not completely because in my head I'm like wait... You feel this way but don't say/do anything? I thought y'all were the strong ones 😅

"You have empowerment at hand, also known as consciousness..." How true, Deb. Indeed it makes such a difference.

The courageous young woman who is aware of the power of her sexuality is also archetypically a "virgin", complete in herself and her inner authority. I think this self-knowledge is very rare and completely unsupported by the culture. Women are encouraged to give away their power, including their sexuality. To take a stand in one's virgininal wholeness is barely understood anymore. A truly "virginal" woman is an empowered woman. I know this stance is enormously politically incorrect, as if it were somehow repressing women, but then, ask yourself who really benefits from casual sexual relationships? Sexuality is not some benign force that can be used casually, especially by young people. This primal imperative can and does end up causing great harm for so many. Just saying. I also want to make clear that my intent is not to shame those of us who were too afraid we'd be abandoned if we actually stated our wants, desires and preferences. Most women I know became sexually active because they were afraid they'd be ditched. That's how disempowered women have become in this hell hole called post modern culture.

The stool if it were a round shape it might be a mandala symbol, which points to wholeness. Also it might have 3 or 4 legs, which is very common motif too.

I would also add that all kinds of female aggression expressions increases along the line from upper class to lower class... or perhaps it is just channeled differently..

I feel like there is such a deep fear of young women engaging in sexuality look at how much shame we place on teenage moms as if they are a anomaly or spectacle .. when in reality the fearsome truth we do not want to admit is that our bodies grant us reproductive capability at such a young age some girls get their periods at 8 .. of course it is seemingly absurd to think of a girl that age as having some power within herself related to reproductivity in our culture at least , but perhaps this is the shadow aspect we cannot admit in our culture … please don’t take this comment out of context … I’m not advocating for any young girl to be engaging in anything so young .. what I’m saying and pointing at is that the initiation process needed like Joseph was saying in order to hold that power , doesn’t exist and if it does it exists in our culture I would even Argue .. only after a women has had her first child … she becomes a mother and then is sort of taken off the pedastle of our cultures eye … and then she is free to engage in her sexuality in secret in her mature life … there are really deeply no containers of initiation for young girls anymore … only infantalization or being framed as some form of fallen young girl if she decides to as nature has given her hormones .. to even test the waters a little bit … our puritan seed is still pulsing in this country in a way that deeply wounds women from a young age .. “born of inherent sin” just because they are born a woman .. this comment is a little rant like but there’s just a lot to unpack in this RU-vid episode … thank u it is a very touching topic

Thank you so much for being wise, brave, and concerned enough to say this. I've thought of this for many years, but in this culture if I said it it would go unheard and be dismissed as "mansplainin'" or "creepy". This affects the boys also indirectly, and a similar shaming process and lack of initiation leaves them just as ignorant, confused, and vulnerable, and also indirectly affects the girls. We're dying a slow death of ignorance and shame in the West, and we all know what the source is. No culture can stand strong and healthy without the blessing and nurture of the Goddess. 🌒🌕🌘
