Fifty Years Since The End of Southern Steam - A Review (Part 2)

The next day 34052 Lord Dowding was off to Weymouth with the "The End of Southern Steam". We duly videoed it at Egham, and then again near Old Basing before setting off for Tisbury, but ominous warnings of traffic hold-ups around Amesbury threatened to wipe out our narrow time margin. This, combined with the fact that we would be covering the same ground the next day, forced us to abandon the chase. With hindsight we should have continued, as a Bulleid pacific climbing Upwey Bank is very much synonymous with the end of Southern steam, and we can only apologise to anyone who expected to see just that in this video.
Sunday 9th July, exactly 50 years on from the last day of steam on the Southern Region, and Clan Line was in fine form, motoring past Monxton and "tanking" through Tisbury at the head of "The Waterloo Sunset", bound for Yeovil.
Eschewing Yeovil and its delightful one-way system we headed for Swanage, and the Swanage Railway's "Southern Sunrise" Gala, which featured 34070 Manston, M7 30053, and 2-6-4T 80146, thought to have been scrapped in 1967, but apparently still in working order (ok it was 80104 in disguise).
Leaving Swanage it was off to Dunbridge to await Clan Line's return, then to Liss, where we had to dodge the resident bullocks, and finally to Weybridge.
5 days and 732 miles* in pursuit of steam and worth every bit.
*During those 732 miles the car's odometer clicked over to 34000 and for the next 111 miles it counted up through all 110 Bulleid light pacifics.

O, NOT SO, FOR A START THERE IS NO INFO ON HERE AS WHEN AND WHY THIS WAS, PLUS NO INFO OR PUBLICITY EASILY SEEN < I SAW NOWT ANYWHERE ON INTERNET ON SUCH AN EVENT> ON AN EVENT USING 3 STEAM LOCOS ON ONE TRAIN AND WITH A LOCO THAT DOES NOT EXIST NOW AS IT WAS NEVER SAVED , SO INPOSSIBLE, JUST TOTAL BLOODY STUPID NONSENSE ONLY DEVISED BY PEOPLE WITH NO COMMON SENSE AND ONLY VERY LIMITED INTELIGENCE.

Another superb video. The Waterloo Sunset trip was a real delight to travel on. We had some really spirited running from 35028 and her crews. A fitting tribute to SR Steam 50 years on.

Thank you very much Christopher. It was a fantastic few days and you were lucky to sample the most significant trip from the inside looking out.

The poster used to say that "the summer comes soonest in the south" but we didn't expect it to hang around for five days. The sun shone on every tribute event to the end of southern steam, and thanks must go to everyone who made it happen. Our thanks also go to you Bob for your continued support.

NO, NOT WITH A LOCO THAT CAN ONLY BE A GHOST LOCO AS 80146 IS NOT ON EARTH NOW S IT WAS SCRAPPED.

Brilliant video. Worth all those miles. Enjoyed watching both parts. Loved the triple header. Fantastic work. We did 1600 miles chasing the GBX . That we thoroughly enjoyed. We imagine you enjoyed doing this trip. Thanks for posting. Kind regards C&A

That's real dedication to cover 1600 miles in the pursuit of steam. Five days filming in a week is far more than we're used to, but you're right it was most enjoyable. Thanks as always for your support C&A.

BUT NO TRIPLE HEADER ADVERTISED AND 80146 DOES NOT EXIST = SHEER STUPIDNESS.

I can just remember once going down from Derby (I think) to Bristol on a steam-pulled train. I was about 5 - I can't recall the style of engine but I think it was one of those with the sideplates at the front. What I'd like to know, if anyone can help please, is what speed the train would have been going at, generally? I remember the corridor coach - really comfortable, and the funny way the window worked and the heating controls. We seemed to be on the train a very long time though! Cheers.

Jon, I'm not sure on this but I would put an estimate on 75mph, as trains would rarely be pushed beyond that for safety and to prevent wear and tear. Don't quote me on that, as there are a number of variables to be taken into account i.e. time period, type of train, etc. But I would say anything from 60 to 75mph.

Not quite the same as when i was on the footplate in the 1950s working trains to the south coast (Ramsgate and Dover) from Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria.. But does give a flavour of nostalgia.

When refilling with water, City of Wells had a water pump placed on top of the tender, does anyone know why?
