Wait until you start looking at the evidence that Marla was a third personality. She and Tyler were never in the same room at the same time. She walked through traffic without anyone braking or honking horns. She smoked in cancer groups and no one ever noticed. There are some great RU-vid breakdowns of Marla being his feminine side and Tyler the ultra masculine. It’ll melt your mind even more!!!!

This is one of my favorite movies. My favorite line is "I was reminded of my first fight with Tyler." The fact you figured out the twist based on that line made me so happy. This movie is worth a rewatch. There are so many background details that are so easy to miss. And then reevaluating scenes knowing the twist, makes the movie much more interesting. Its funny you said that Marla's scenes clued you in. Most people think she's just as crazy or manipulative. But its so interesting realizing how much saner she seem on a second watch (at least to me). Instead of a manipulator she is a victim of it all. The thing about this movie that scares me is that Tyler's speeches and monologues are far too similar to that of politicians. They identify problems in your life. They relate to you. They get you to believe in them. Then they give you a solution. It doesn't matter if the solution doesn't make sense. It doesn't matter if its psychotic. People will follow.

Fight Club is the ultimate Gen X movie and a perfect depiction of the nihilistic mood of the late 90s. That terrifying realization the main character has that he sort of is the villain, and even then, stopping the chaos still seems impossible, is so intense. So many people look back and regret their actions, but can you imagine realizing that “you” are gonna keep doing things you’re opposed to, again and again, on purpose, and you can’t do anything about it? Luckily, stuff like Dissociative Identity Disorder are much better understood these days, so it’s far less scary a condition than it used to be. Until maybe a decade ago, the general public only heard about similar issues from horror movies. As more systems have come out, it’s been such a relief for others to feel like they’re basically (kinda) normal after all.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time because I was working at a theater and before release date, theaters always need to run the print to make sure it was assembled correctly and theater employees can jump in and watch if we want. I had never heard of this movie, and neither did anyone else but someone needed to sit through it so they asked me and someone else. Holy crap my mind was blown and of course I came back to watch with other people. It was probably the marketing, but this movie did not do well at the box office and only became a thing when it was released on DVD.

Answer to your questions on the ending. In the last few scenes of the movie, the movie is asking the audience whether you believe that both the protag and tylers characters know what each other is thinking. The protag is constantly searching for tyler and finding clues to his whereabouts. Insinuating that he doesn’t know what tyler is thinking. The movie then tries to confuse the audience by having the protag say, “if you know then I know”. When cutting the bomb wire. Later tyler asks the protag, “why would you put a gun to your head?”. This question insinuates that tyler doesn’t know what the protag is thinking. At the end of the movie, the protag realizes that tyler doesn’t actually know what he’s thinking. Thats when he says, “my eyes are open 👀”. The protag shoots himself without intending on killing himself, but because tyler doesn’t know this. Tyler has to assume that the protag is dead. Therefore he would have to disappear because his existence is based on the his belief that the protag is alive.

The whole thing was that he never got over his insomnia. Different parts of him went to sleep at different times. I had undiagnosed sleep apnea for over a decade, and when you don't get sleep, that's what happens, parts of you sleep while you're otherwise awake. It gets really strange, dreams start interfering with rational thoughts, driving gets hypnotic. I went into fugue states where I either acted on unconscious instinct or didn't move at all, frozen in place, sometimes for as much as an hour. I thought I had split personalities, sometimes. I found the TV remote in the ice tray once. I got food delivered that I hadn't remembered ordering. I woke up in my car, parked with the motor running, in front of a place I had lived many years before. It messed with my sense of time and my grounding to reality. There's a weird urge to repeat stupid behaviors, because part of you can't figure out why you did them in the first place, and you repeat them to try to make yourself understand, but instead it gets stuck in a loop or gets worse.

I love how Shoshana figured out the twist only halfway through XD Also, a few tidbits on this movie. Brad Pitt was eating healthy, working out constantly, and tanning, so Tyler Durden would look more buff and healthy by the end, while Edward Norton stayed away from sunlight, and practically starved himself, so Narrator would become smaller and more sickly looking by the end. Essentially showing the Tyler alter completely subsuming the other. And there's a Starbucks cup in every single scene. Edit: Regarding the wall of "Human Sacrifices", remember Raymond from the convenience store. When Tyler told Narrator they had an assignment to do, he called it "Human Sacrifice". Those are all people that have been threatened with death if they don't start working towards what they wanted to do.

Surprised I had to scroll down this far to finally see American History X mentioned, an amazing film and incredible performance by Ed Norton. And agree the movie Se7en is incredible (and hopefully hasn't been spoiled to Shoshana/Vince)

You should watch this again there are single frames of Tyler in the beginning of the movie. And a lot of people think Marla is still just another part of his psyche. If you watch the dance in the hallway when Tyler Rescues Marla as the cops go by there’s a mirror that they aren’t seen in. It’s an interesting theory

In response to what is said at the end: what’s interesting about the movie is that the fighting is really the background to the rest of an entire amazingly written book & perfectly written/directed movie. The first time you see it it is surprising how little the fighting is a part of it, when it comes to the whole.

I think the narrator’s psychic break started with the weekly “guided meditation” where he was guided to find his “Power Animal”. It seems that it’s possible that the hypnotic metaphor turned on itself and created Tyler Durden; which lead to everything else.

Definitely looking forward to this one. 😊 This is one of my favorite Brad Pitt and Edward Norton movies. Another great Edward Norton movie that I highly recommend is the 1998 movie "Rounders". And another great Brad Pitt movie that I very highly recommend if neither of you have seen yet is the 1994 "Interview with a Vampire". Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊

This is one of those "must watch"movies. So glad you liked it. And since you want more, I'll suggest Memento, the Usual Suspects and Mulholland Drive. All of them might have you scratching your heads😉

I never really paid attention to directors either, but when I started to, I realized that David Fincher made all my favorite movies. You should check out anything he's made.

Interesting you mention Silence of the Lambs. Ed Norton starred in Red Dragon with Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lector), a pre-cursor to SOTL.
@memento7979
@memento7979 Месяц назад
The whole svicide at the end was symbolic ridding himself of the Pitt Tyler. He's still Tyler because he's always been, that's why the only name we got was narrator and the fake name he gave the support group. Also speaking of Silence of the Lambs and not knowing Edward Norton, he starred in one of the sequels Red Dragon.

if you like psychotic movies that blow your mind, I would highly suggest `Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas` with Johnny Deep and Benicio Del Toro!! It`s an absolute classic!!!! It`s even crazier when you know. that it`s based on real events!!!

This Fight Club movie was based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk and he actually wrote sequels as two comic book series (Fight Club 2 and Fight Club 3). It'd be great if they were able to get Fincher, Norton, Pitt & Carter (Maria) back together to film one of those sequels since all of those characters return in the comic book follow-ups.

One time I had a bad infection lump on my arm, I could only think to name it “Marla”. I remember telling my roommate at the time things like “I’m taking Marla out for a walk” ;)

At the end it was the narrator who was present. Shooting himself was the narrator outgrowing his dependency on Tyler by taking control of his life. In the book, the bullet passes out his cheek. That's why he didn't die but Tyler did. Also there are a million hints to the twist and it's well worth a re-watch
