Just make sure those perspectives are ones you actually agree with, not ones copied from a movie. Do what you want to do, not what others dictate you do.
Tyler is and always being a hypocrite.. which in fairness most people are.. we all want to be the one doing the right thing or say the right things but we always cheat in someway or another or show our hypocrites..
My exact thoughts. Look how stylish and modern looking Tyler is compared to the narrator. Edward Norton's character actually wants to be that kind of cool, good looking alpha male which ironically, is part of the consumerist culture.
Throughout the film Tyler is a representation of the person Edward Norton’s character wants to be - it’s fitting that he’s dressed in more stylish clothes
I'll define God for you and anyone who reads this. Enjoy. 1. He, God, is One (alone), (Absolute Oness of His Essential Existence, not in the numerical sense of the numeral which has its second and third but the One which has no second. The expression one, is in the sense of being the ONLY in conceiving Whose existence all the faculties of the human intellect are helpless. His attributes are His Essence and not separate and never separable from Him. He is One with none comparable to Him, without beginning or end , Unlimited by time, space, or circumstances. A reality before which all others have no existence. He is not of composite nature. He is known to all but not identified with any. Unity of His Essence.) 2. The Needless. (Perfect--the compact--independent--on Whom all depend. He is all-compact in His Unity in the sense that He cannot be described or defined to be void of any excellence or any excellence to be void of Him. He is the One to Whom recourse is made by everything Eternal for its needs, both for existence and for perfection. The One who needs no subsistence of any kind--Self existing to understand Whose existence every mind is drowned in marvel and wonder. Nothing is hidden from His all-enveloping Knowledge--Is not accommodable in anything not even in intellect, Infinite in all aspects of the existence and attributes. In fact the names or attributes mentioned to describe His existence or its nature, are inconceivable in their fullness hence cannot be translated to give the correct or the fullest sense or the meaning of the terms. He is all in all in the true sense of the term. He is all-pervading and all-comprehensive, which means His being infinite. There cannot be a second or a match or a rival for such a being) 3. He begets nor is He begotten, (Nothing has come out of Him. There is no match or equal to Him in any aspect, in any meaning, or in any sense of any of the divine qualities) 4. And there is none like unto Him. (Since man is a limited being and he with his inherent limitations can not correctly conceive of things unknown to him but through some examples in the terms used for things physical, certain terms have to be helplessly used, otherwise the essence or the qualities of God are beyond any description or definition with any amount of human knowledge with maximum wealth of the linguistic expressions which man can ever coin in the mine of his intellect. Any thing man coins would be incomparably insignificant and hopelessly imperfect and miserably inadequate to deal with the matter connected with the knowledge of the infinite).

Tyler was also one of the things the main character "owned" in a way. As the movie advances, Tyler becomes more and more in control and begins to own the main character
Ehhh .. but Tyler wasnt an object he could own, he was an extension of himself.. therefore in actuality, through out the movie, what he really ends up owning, is himself (his life)
@@CursedKoopa Think about the word "possession". Tyler was made by the protagonist in order to help the protagonist achieve and BECOME what he couldn't, but wanted to be. Tyler was just a possession the character unknowingly had at first (which could only come at night). But through the movie, the main character was possessed by Tyler and even became Tyler for society, and started taking control more and more often. Also, the fact that we can't tell (at least in the book), what the protagonist name kind of foreshadows this in my opinion :)
yoooooo, what are you smoking, aye, this comment lit up my day because i never thought of it that way, bless up ben [this is a nice message from the internet universe that is only granted once every pluto sun cycle]
Yes he's slowly becoming not himself but what he consider as an ideal, in the beginning je doesn't smoke and then he ended up smoking in his workplace, he described himself as a nice guy but then he threatened his boss
Ahead? The term consumerism has been around for a half century and the phenomenon and it's critics originate from the 17th and 18th century. Materialism has even deeper roots than that.
I was a teen when I first watched Fight Club. When Tyler said "the things you own end up owning you," I laughed. I thought it was so absurd. But as I got older, and the more I watched it, the more I understood how painfully true that statement is (maturity is a hell of a thing).
Things you own end up owning you only if you are poor. If you are billionaire you're not gonna give a shit about anything. You won't care if your house gets burned down.
@@saverio_6990 Not really, you literally become immune if you just have a little bit of brain. You can never lose money if you are moderately wealthy because you are able to diversify and invest properly. When you are in this state you are truly free. This movies message about owning shit is bullshit im sorry to break it to you. In real world you have to pay bills and eat food for energy.
Although i guess i agree you shouldn't buy stuff you don't need. Most people nowdays just fry their brain with dopamine, so in that sense i agree, the stuff you own ends up owning you by literally controlling your actions with dopamine.
The line in this movie changed my life. Up until then I thought you needed all this crap and I saw how chasing having stuff was most of my time. I live a rather minimalist life now. I have a furnished house, car, etc. But I don’t have closets, garage, basement full of crap. If I don’t use it I get rid of it. Meanwhile all my consumerist and hoarding friends and family are constantly working to afford the next . They move every 5 years to upgrade to bigger houses and drag all their crap from one house to the next. I moved a couple years ago after being in the same place for 20 years. Aside from my furniture all my stuff fit in a dozen boxes. Time-filled and stress free life full of activity and travel. That’s a better way to live.
I think you (and I) have a really good outlook on life. Chasing what you don't have will end up chasing you. In todays world however we need basic material needs such as a house, transport options, connectivity devices etc. However those things are just our byproducts and don't have any purpose in our life other than what they are meant to be. Alas I think (like you) that life should be filled with good people and exploration - travel. Memories that will stay when we get older and look back and say wow those were good times and not be sorry for the things we did.

@AshTheFlash100 this video is timeless. It never really changed. Not before the 90's. Not even after that. Just look at us now being all hooked up on social media like fish eating the bait. The bait for more short-term fulfilments and escapisms.
@@DavidGutierrezRojas fight club is about selling the " anti- escapism... escapism". Tricking the audience to belive that they are in on a secret, and that they can escape escapism.
Considering how important Tyler’s point is in regards to basic human desire, the hedonic treadmill, etc., it will never not be relevant. He’s discussing the human condition on a very basic level. It will always be relevant. The only reason our problems today are even problems are for the same basic reasons
The "Do you want a cigarette?" line is a good example of the dynamics between the two characters and enhances Tyler's visual representation of the world. It depicts his "let the chips fall as they may" attitude.
@@sweengeppetto1915that is the true beauty of all of this. The narrator is envisioning Tyler as the perfect picture of true freedom. He literally creates his own hypocrisy in Tyler. He thinks in his head that stop caring about all this BS I lost, but here is Tyler who looks like some dude who was plucked right out of a GQ cover.
My favorite movie. It’s a masterpiece. I can’t even explain how much it helped me to how to view life or myself. It basically helped me how to be happy with the little. I was very materialistic human being before fight club. Buying clothes endlessly fucking shoes or other stupid shit that I didn’t need. I spent so much money. More I bought those things the more I get depressed, anxious feeling like a shit about myself. I just wanted to impress the people around me so bad. Now I’m much more happy with absolutely little I finally got my inner peace. I don’t know maybe some people wouldn’t understand but to me The less you have materialistic shit more you happy
Moral of the story - whatever you're going through, someone always has it worse than you. Also nothing lasts forever, we came into this world with nothing and will leave the same. So stop worrying about those things you can't change and just live in the present moment taking each day as it comes. The more in control you try to be of your life, the less control you will actually have to the point at which you subject yourself to 'figuring' life out till you die - you become a slave to life. The scene is so powerful and conveys a message applicable to everyone going up against the circumstances of life..
Change is possible, but worrying about life and overthinking everything will control you. If we managed to control our emotions instead of worrying about things you cannot control, we can find peace. It's a good thing to lose your ego. To identify your thoughts instead of letting them control you. Just my opinion though, cheers!
@@snipe4lllife there is only one problem. You cant lose the ego!. As you say you can identify the thoughts and see that they just come and go in the same way that emotions do. The brain works mostly automatic in the same way other organs do. meditasjon is just to recognise this and to acept that this is how it is. There is no more to it. The ego cant be destroyd. This is the ultimat fantasy of this film. It`s great symbolism of the minds inner stugles, but i think that alot of people dont see the tings that you are talking about. Insted they think that they can in some magical way destroy the ego.
Some philosophers and psychologist would make good counterpoints against your claims tho. I mean you got a point but it seems like basic armchair philosophy to md
For most people especially my age that quote is very practical for phones. They take over our entire lives and seem to decide our wellbeing for us. Scary
The semi-irony here is that he’s drinking and smoking a lot for this small clip. He’s consuming alcohol and cigarettes as he’s talking about consumers. And he smokes throughout the movie. It’s a Vice.. it owns him. I love the message tho. That’s why I say moderation and balance is key in life
Tyler reprsents the hypocrisy of the illusion of materialism bc he is not real to begin with like in the end he was a mental creation of ego that reflects what the main character became aware of of human nature and desire to acquire things to fulfill some innate sense of materialism if they acquire more it wil lfulfill them or complete some longing they have
@@37H662 its not the action of materialism thats the bad part, the main thing I'm saying is that yeah people buy products, we buy food to sustain our bodies, some people hunt and fish for survival, its our evolution to survive like our for fathers when they had to be hunter gatherers for tribes and such for survival, but its the overindulgence is my point, where some people become consumed by material possession and the question arises do you own the material/possessions or do the possession own you that they take away your very identity, it's just a balance of owning something
I have a deep scratch on my brand new car and was really upset about it. I came here looking for a different perspective. That is literally my biggest problem in life right now. Tyler Durden reminded me to quit being such a bitch.
A tiny thing, but something I like: When asking the questions and setting up the speech, Tyler says "we". But when he moves to his actual philosophy, he moves to "I"

This film has some very deep and philosophical ideas that are even more relevant today than when it came out in the 90s. I still use this quote today. "The things you own end up owning you" which leads me to believe that my phone records my speech then Google uses this to create content.
If u like thia concept of minimalism u may like a documentary called "my stuff" made a few years ago by guy from Finland I think .. as an experiment he puts all his stuff in storage and each day takes one thing out .. learning what is really needed ..

Spent the last three years of my life working 60+ hours a week to pay for a house so I could have a partner and a "life." Spent all of my time working, maybe an hour or two of free time before having to go to sleep again so I can wake up and do it all over again. My relationship suffered drastically. She started to believe that I didn't care about her, while my mind was being blown because I worked my ass off for her to have a house. Needless to say, the relationship ended recently. Now the house is pointless; it's a big, giant, empty box that I live in alone. Since I don't have my fiance anymore, I don't need the house. Since I don't need the house, I don't need the job. Since I don't need the job, my time is actually mine. My lease for the house ends in three weeks. I have no idea, whatsoever, what I'm going to do. But I know I'll be happier. Because literally anything will be less miserable than slaving away a job I hate to pay for shit I don't need for people who don't care. Peace and love y'all ✌🏻❤️

I love this phrase. It's the real truth, we humans go after things and these consume all our time and energy. It's like saying "be careful what you wish for"
I like how "you did lose a lot of versatile solutions for modern living" is out of character, like at this stage Tyler is still just putting Jack's thoughts into words.
It's not out of character, he's using general lingo pulled from magazines in an ironic statement. Someone like Tyler would absolutely read one for a laugh and rattle off a quote like that.

I don't see many comments getting defensive over consumism. The movie kinda failed to convey the intended meaning of the book though, because I do see a lot of people idolising Tyler as if he was better than the consumism he criticises.
No one is talking about the smoking. Smoking is the the purest form of consumerism that Tyler is talking about here, it's addictive, expensive and ultimately pointless not to mention it's a multimillion dollar industry. At the same time it could be seen as a act of rebellion and living-in-the-moment because he's trading his health for small hits of nicotine. I think it nicely reflects the duality and hypocrisy of Tyler's character.
Tyler is the epitome of style and fashion, his body is all perfectly molded, he takes good care of his physique, even his movements is like everything about Mr. Durden is perfectly carculated
The best life trajectory for a man is to watch this in his mid-teens, then become a Christian, THEN watch this again afterward, preferably in his late-20's, early-to-mid-thirties.
Bought an expensive bike now I am tied to it because I will be paying back the loan for it for 3 years. I don’t own a bike the bike owns me for the next 3 years. Lesson learned, this quote “the things you own ends up owning you” became very relevant after buying that motorbike.
