You popped up on my feed yesterday, and you’ve been pretty entertaining. It’s been pretty cool to hear an actual fighter pilot comment on things. As for this, given your reactions in the previous video, as soon as he said ‘best fighter pilots on the planet’, I _knew_ that a ‘no’ was coming lol. Gotta ask, can you actually suspend disbelief and enjoy movies and games, or does your skill in your profession make that impossible?

@travisneill704
@travisneill704 2 года назад
@@Ad-ho7hc are you asking how to convey that in a screenplay through actions, fewer words, theme, and artistry? Yes, there is. But like most of the time when you see expositional dialogue, it's simply laziness that carries that day. Most times it's viewed as too subtle for the audience. If that's the case, then fine, you just have dumbed down dialogue. Got it. Speilberg used to get around this by adding a layer of tension to the exposition. a good example of this is Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indiana and Sala are talking about the markings on the medalion and how high the staff is supposed to be. It's completely expositional but Indy is tossing a poisoned date around and we are more worried about him eating that than what they are saying. That's more sophisticated than what they did in Maverick. Please don't get me wrong, I've seen Maverick 6 times now and love it. But it's not flawless and it's a good study to identify the weak parts.

Was an F-15 crew chief. I know that our base we lost a 15 on takeoff from a bird going in intake. I’ve seen a video of a 16 going down from a bird strike. They do happen all the time and when they go in the intake, a big inspection on the engine has to be done. Usually a bunch of blades get damaged and need to be filed or replaced.

I'm glad you guys noticed what I did about their training. They simulated a route that they have to take for the actual mission, but they're also flying in a canyon during practice. So did they just happen to find a canyon that is exactly the same as the one for the mission and required the exact same maneuvers? And if that's the case, how did they hit a wall in the simulated one and not die for real? Edit: Okay, another thing! When Maverick says they're going to pull a 9 G climb out of the crater and it will likely bend their airframe, how are they practicing it without, you know, bending the fucking airframe? Are they just sacrificing dozens of F-18's to attempt this?
@doudymac
@doudymac 2 года назад
I think the practice canyon is not an exact copy of the real one. Just close enough for simulation. That's why they weren't close to the mountains for real. Just like practicing hitting the target was in an open desert area.

Funny part about the timeline that is pushed to speed up the strike. 1: The Navy cares about the enemy's remote, inhospitable doom valley enough to worry about irradiating it in the first place. 2: Treating a nuclear enrichment facility as if it doesn't take MONTHS to process even a few kilograms of material. "Oh, we have to hit the place before they get their first shipment!" "Why?" "Because then it'll have material in it!" "How is that a problem?" "They'll be able to process weapons grade uranium!" "...In what universe does a centrifuge get you weapons grade uranium in five minutes?" I'd be going: 'Hey, why don't we wait for the first shipment to arrive, then bomb it at our leisure? Then they're not just down an enrichment facility, but they've also lost the raw resources of their entire first shipment!'

This is not a movie for Hoover and Wonky. This is a movie for me, the comm-multi pilot that will never go faster than Mach .85 but still loves badass cinematography of even more badass aero planes. And let’s be honest, this movie needed Jon Hamm, so let the 3 Star have his day! 🤣🤣🤣

So, as someone who knows nothing about it, what would be the actual emergency procedure Phoenix should have followed in the event she had an engine fire due to bird strike/other obstruction?

Worried about the g limit? On Aircrew Interview's channel he had a Q&A with a Tomcat pilot Keith "Okie" Nance who tells a story of pulling 12Gs (maybe it was 12.5) in a Tomcat because the ground crew had reduced the weight of pull on the stick and didn't tell him and he made it back to base just fine, but his comment about him and his RIO peeling themselves off the cockpit floor was classic. Lol

@@WALTERBROADDUS so there's a video of Snort Snodgrass talking at the Smithsonian about a mission he was on in Desert Storm where he pulled 10gs to break a SAM lock and during the story he references a time when his dad was involved in the Tomcat development when the test pilots told his father that the F-14 was a 13g airframe. Once again, i know that I'm referencing a story told in an open arena that anyone can go and pull up, but once again, all i have to go on is the word of people who flew the jet and have a fair amount of stick time in the jet.

@ 26:14 - Trade every second your engines are still making useful thrust for altitude. Altitude = options. Longer glide distance, more time to try a restart, more time to choose a ditch location... this was a great reflex imo

Based on all this low level flying and bomb dropping it seems like the British tornado or the old aardvark would’ve done a better job. They both have terrain following radar and low level auto pilot. Does a super hornet have that as well? The whole mission seems ridiculous. We already have crews on board carriers trying to do this stuff this whole movie seems flawed and it’s basic premise.

You are correct in all regards..it's a hollywood movie..they are purely popcorn movies, intended to entertain folks and make money. They are not, and never have been factual documentaries. Take EVERYTHING in movies & games with a grain of salt & an asprin.

Knowing nothing, I thought the bird strike scene was the film showing its authenticity by going through the actual emergency routine. That it's not the actual routine is strange as the scene could have still ended with the crew ejecting.

My wife hates watching military movies with me . Simple as that . For example , why do they need 5 minutes of posturing and shit talking allowing the bad guy to get away or turn the situation around when a simple shot to the face and leave would suffice ? ....... Her response " because the movie would only be 10 minutes long " . Obviously she knows something I don't ..

love listening to these fighter pilots evaluate this movie...think it's one of the best movies in general that i've ever seen, but of course they had to take some liberties with the facts of flying jets in order to propel the story along and create the drama for the pay-offs...have deep respect for fighter pilots- a very, serious job...
