Fighting Bear on his terms (no feinting, looking up or down, crouching or messer) 

My first impression is not great, it's very little do to with actual mechanical skill and more ability management. There's a rock paper scissors ish thing here but it doesn't really matter when you can run away until you get your abilities. The progression system also doesn't seem very fun. Nobody will want to grind this game and there's an entire crafting system to access different weapons and such.

No, this happens in any game that is skill based and no luck, which are 1v1 games. Stuff like this also happens in AoE or Starcraft. If you got no team to blame, you gotta blame the game

Hexen and Hexen 2. Both predate Quake 2 and have some modicum of melee combat. But for the Doom Engine what do you expect? But understand, instead of doom 2 you'd have Lo Wang. Daikatana would need to wait another another 4 years to even get a sniff of the quake2 an entity that wouldn't exist without the foundation of a shooting game. However you enjoy whatever game you choose to enjoy, and if this was meant to be a joke. Heh. Funny. But if Shooters never existed Carmac and Romero prolly would'nt've made the doom engine, carmac probably would have went on to make the Quake engine regardless, and Daikatana would stay in development hell for an undisclosed duration. Or maybenot, seeing as romero wouldn't be a rockstar for making doom. So the general quality of games you're looking at are things like Hexen and Shadow Warrior. I'm sure there are ample other titles out there that have a take on melee combat, but I'm just giving examples. The reality is, in a world without shooting games, development of those titles you predated by a decade would more likely get pushed further back. Cause you don't need to innovate rendering technology if you only need to load a quantity of people in a small area.

Maybe instead of Doom 2 there is Daikatana (a non 3D version), and it's a smash hit for it's unique swordplay, becoming an instant classic and one of the most influential games to ever exist. With the release of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (except like 10 years earlier), it's 3D graphics and gameplay that just builds off the already existing classics, the genre takes off as the biggest in gaming. Now FPS games are all that anybody is making (First Person Swinger that is). Now modern day, and First Person Swingers still dominate the market, but unfortunately most that do don't keep all the roots from the originals, leaving some quite tired of the genre. Steam is littered with these First Person Swinger games, some good, some bad. AAA studios have modernized them, leaving fans of the classics to be left with nothing (although there has been a resurgence of the more classic type of First Person Swingers in indie studios that have been dominating their own smaller market). The Esports scene is dominated by them and wouldn't even exist without. And Mordhau, Mordhau, well, Mordhau doesn't exist. After Dark Messiah there was another, very influential game called "Half-Swing". This "Half-Swing" game ran off the "Swource" engine, which spawned the home of many mods. Eventually, a mod named "Age of Machine" was released. Although a bit clunky, it's was unique with it's use of guns allowing it to gain a following. After this, we see a sequel to Age of Machine called, "Machine: Modern Warfare", which was an absolute successor, and the birthplace of many, what we call "firearm-shooter" fans. Machine: Modern Warfare was slowly neglected by it's developers. A player named "squeeze" who had actually already developed a patch for Machine: Modern Warfare" to enhance the game ended up working with a group of people to develop a supposed successor to Machine: Modern Warfare called "Sidegrip". So Mordhau doesn't exist because the melee genre was already on top, meaning that events that lead to Mordhau had a completely different kind of outcome.
