Fighting Food Poverty with Britain's Busiest Food Banks

VICE heads to Newcastle to go inside one of the busiest food banks in Britain, where food is being distributed for free to more than 1,000 people a week. We meet the dedicated volunteers and the locals for whom poverty has become a part of everyday life after decades of industrial decline and years of austerity cuts. Inevitably, in such a situation, the system will occasionally falter.

Living in South Africa which could be said to have poverty on a whole different scale and this film still reduced me to tears. Poverty so ugly wherever it appears. Thank you to the volunteers, filmmakers and the brave locals who agreed to share their stories.

It’s so sad, everyone I know is working harder to survive . I have 3 children( my daughter moved out 18 months ago and we pay her £200 a month so she can have the heating on. My boys are going to secondary school next year and it’s £500 + each for their uniforms and PE kit. With two birthdays and Christmas, that means that we will be around -£1500 before they start the biggest year of their lives and won’t be able to afford school away days and trips. It’s absolutely terrifying. I haven’t slept for more than 4 hours a night in nearly a year now. The worst thing is there are families worse off than us😢😢

All it takes is one catastrophe: a sudden death of a family member; a serious illness of yourself or a dearly loved one, etc. It happens to more people than many are wiling to admit. I got two disciplinaries when I worked at a big UK supermarket. I reduced food waste by a lot, which when you think about 2 people is amazing. A huge waste is the bakery, they throw away tons. I was bagging the misshapen, overbaked bread and literally giving it away. The idiotic thing is the moronic managers would rather pay to have 3/4 crages of bread to be dumped rather than be paid or taken for free. The food charity guy was allowed in once a week. Sad thing is it was the greedy customers who got me in trouble. The me me selfish attitude really spoils things for those who really need help. I know not everyone is like that, but you focus more on the bad

I work for a supermarket chain and we work with local food banks. In my opinion, we don't give enough. The amount of food that goes in the bin every single day is shocking. Food that has hit its sell by date, but could easily last a few more days. Food that could go to people who need it but can't because of silly rules. They won't let us buy the bread that was made that day once the shop is closed- they won't even give it to us for free, it HAS to go in the bin. We've proposed ideas to higher ups but they simply won't listen.
@finbarstud
@finbarstud 4 года назад
@@KittehHawk Couldn't agree more, it's a scandal really. I think a lot of it is fear of people getting ill, suing etc. Why not just make em sign a disclaimer or something promising not to sue? there's gotta be a way. Sell by dates are deliberately too careful anyway, I'm normally happy if something's 1 or 2 days past. sometimes more, depends what it is.
@SaschaHusenbeth

@@KittehHawk they do it in the name of hygiene. The real reason is, of course, that it's not profitable to give the stuff away below market price, and undercuts demand.

At one point I had to quit my job because of my health ( was in process of getting disability) & my husband was layed off his job. We finally got food stamps, our landlord understood & let us pay as we could, my mom & brother bought groceries & other things we needed. At another time, I went to a food bank. We had a little boy, in kindergarten & I wanted him to have milk, cereal & other things little ones want. That was a long time ago, but I remember it well. My husband died 3 yrs ago at age 70. I live alone with my little dog. Now I'm at a time when I can help others. Thanks for your post, it made me think & feel little ashamed I never thought of it before. God bless you.

Some of these people are trying hard, applying for jobs all over the place and never being given a chance. Nor do they have the means to go through education to get credentials and skills. It's easy to say " You made bad choices " but that doesn't mean you should be punished for it tor the rest of your life. We are not all given the same opportunities and chances and sometimes your lot in life is just to he average but again that doesn't mean that you should suffer. We have enough resources and money to feed and house every single person in this world. But it will never be the case because if you don't have kindness in your heart no one can put it there. Peace.

Hits close to home this, it really does (literally too, I live near Newcastle). I was raised in a flat on a rough estate, and we didn’t have to use food banks, because my grandparents would pay all my mum’s bills and food costs. However most of our food was always out of date but we had to eat it because we had no choice. My grandparents weren’t exactly the richest either.

Having been in a very bad situation myself and still very depressed, I think another good social assistance initiative would be to teach people how to cook using every part of what they buy. For example, when I buy veg such as leeks, I make soup with the green leaves (bung in a few potatoes too) then use the white parts with a vinaigrette (oil, vinegar and mustard if you have it). Soups can be made from virtually anything, try nettle soup, lovely and full of iron and vitamins, add a potato s&p, so virtually free. If you get a basket of fruit, say, apples, make compote with a bit of sugar. Even the peelings can be used just add a little sugar and cook in the oven. Although I do realise not everyone can afford to put the oven on, when you do, put as much stuff in as possible to cook at the same time. Bung a few onions and potatoes in then sprinkle with some grated cheese... the possibilities are endless. Use the water from boiling potatoes to use for soup.... Just a few suggestions, I hope they'll help somebody, wasting food is a no, no whether you're rich or poor.

She's 5 now and we also have a 2 year old boy. We got through our hard times because of the kind people that spared a thought for us. Staying positive and working hard to improve our lives. Keep donating to food banks or charity's if you can afford to and keep thinking of others and being a good person, it will reward you in the long run. Put yourself and your family first and never feel guilt or shame for your privalages. Be thankful for anything good that you have and share some of what you have in excess. whats funny there jim is, i bet you can pay your bills and not worry about getting kicked out or not worry about having to save the tin of beans for another day cos you cant afford to buy more food, you more than likely haven't been as low as they are in that situation. it's easy to sit on your high horse and look down on people in need and laugh about it, and say they're scroungers and scumbags, but if you get into the situation at some point where its you in the line at a food bank cos you're flat broke with £60 to your name a week, to pay gas, electric, food and other living costs, because you cant find work, or get denied work, or have medical reasons as to why you cant physically work, you'd soon change your tone. i've been there, on both sides, living the high life with a job and cash to literally burn, and i've been so low that i feel like life isn't worth living stood in a line at the food bank. it's not as cosy and comfortable as you'd think, but to each their own...

People forget it’s incredibly hard to quit smoking even when your life is going well. I’m heavily addicted and if I had to choose between food and tobacco, it would honestly be a hard choice. Probably sounds ridiculous to someone who doesn’t smoke but addiction is awful.

Maybe if she had a decent GP and some proper medical support?, Please stop blaming folk who have no support and cannot cope?

This was 7 years ago, and cigarettes weren't £10.40 a packet. And we can blame the government for the price of cigarettes today 2022, and if they really were worried about people's health they would ban cigarettes, but they wouldn't get their tax if they banned them.
