Flying the F-4 Phantom, Randall Harold "Duke" Cunningham and Willie Driscoll shot down their first North Vietnamese MiG on January 19, 1972. They scored their second MiG kill on May 08, 1972. On May 10, 1972, they became the first American fliers to qualify as Aces in the Vietnam War when they shot down three MiGs in a single action. In addition to becoming the first Vietnam Aces, the two became the first Team of Aces, the first to score a triple kill over Vietnam, and the first U.S. all-missile Aces.
Cunningham joined the United States Navy in 1967. During his service, Cunningham and his Navigator/Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) "Irish" Driscoll became the only Navy aces in the Vietnam War, flying an F-4 Phantom II from aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CV-64). He and Driscoll recorded five aerial victories against North Vietnamese MiG-21 and MiG-17 aircraft between January and May 1972, including three kills in one flight (earning them the Navy Cross).
In the final engagement, Cunningham downed a MiG-17, supposedly piloted by "Colonel Toon", a mythical North Vietnam Air Force fighter ace loosely based on a North Vietnamese pilot from the 921st Fighter Regiment named Nguyen Van Coc.
Van Coc retired from the Vietnamese People’s Air Force in 2002.
While returning to the carrier after the final shoot-down, Cunningham and Driscoll were forced to eject from their F-4 over water near Nam Dinh, but they were rescued by Navy helicopter.
Here is a bit of the story...As they approached the coast at 10,000 feet, Cunningham spotted another MiG-17 heading straight for them. He told Driscoll to watch how close they could pass the MiG's nose so he could not double back as quickly to their six o’clock. While this tactic worked against A-4s in training at Miramar, it was a near-fatal mistake. ... A-4s didn’t have guns in the nose.

He was one of the airmen I admired until I learned of his crimes. There are lessons there. This does not take away from the skill and courage the man showed while he served. Lets not forget that. Another lesson is that Washington can corrupt the best of men. Another is that people who served are not saints, and some of them, while showing great skill can still have some flawed characters to put it mildly. Not saying this applies to this man, I never met him. I served 34 years in the Air Force and while I worked with great people, some were definitely not the sort you'd want to associate with. Let's enjoy this great video now.

@@ThomasMaltus Knowing what I know now about Washington politics there is a good chance he was set up. There is also the peer factor, where everybody is doing it or worse. Bribery is pretty small potatoes when we look at Pelosi insider trading, Swalwell banging a Chinese spy as part of the Intel committee, etc. This whole business could fill a lessons learned video about what can happen when someone who is not a career politician goes to Washington

I totally agree with the last part.Of your statement.I don't feel that whatever he did.Criminally has anything to do with his Bravery and commitment to this country. He was a boyhood iidol of mine. But to suggest that he was somewhat set up because he was very vocal or aggressive is just ludicrous! As much as I love Randy Cunningham. He didn't have a checkered past and it followed him for a long time. He wasn't very well liked by his teammates And his superiors. As a matter of fact, he was kinda regarded as. Unreputable and dishonest. Another air force legend by the name of robin olds Wrote in his memoir about and unreputable. Lieutenant that he would not dignify by naming him in his book. That lieutenant was Randy cuttingham. It had nothing to do with his. Aggression, in politics, let's just call it what it is. This clearly shows the problem in Vietnam wasn’t due to maneuverability but the BVR ONLY Doctrine that was in place during Vietnam. The phantoms ended up in Gunfights armed with missiles that failed 90% of the time and pilots not trained to Dogfight. But those pilots who could Dogfight became ACEs in the phantoms and Frank Ault Report shows that the problem was with bad missiles and pilots not trained to Dogfight. Dan Pedersen the founder of Top Gun armed with the Ault Report trained Top Gun pilots who would take the ratio from a 2:1 to 24:1 with the phantoms by the end of Vietnam. This record is never talked about!

JESSE FOLMAR shot down a Mig 15 in 1952 with his Corsair, probably a FG1D Corsair. He and another Corsair were jumped by 6 Mig 15's, the other Corsair beat it because he was shooting film and had no armament which left Folmar alone against the 6 Mig's. After shooting down the Mig, he was shot down himself by one of the 5 remaining Mig's.

Most controversial take of the day... being anti-B-52 genocide during the Vietnam conflict was the more patriotic, more natl.-defense focused position and is worth more respect than the village-erasers. The US oversaw countless crimes against humanity in their bombing campaigns, as witnessed daily now with Israel on Gaza (Today's Laos and Cambodia). These arent "heroes defending b52" they are rebranded genociders following orders just like the SS of equal infamy. When US life is greater than all other humans. Exceptionalism should be the title of this channel. History is history. Embellishment and propogandizing/whitewashing history is a choice and a wrong one. I hope this channel makes better choices. They call the patriotic ones unpatriotic and that's hilarious. Why our boys fighting for Vietnamese dirt we'll never touch or help develop? "Patriotism". No questions asked 9r somehow youre unpatriotic, march blindly into cannon fodder and trust big goverment that is now owned by 4 arms dealers... right. Way to carry water for them as if needed. The patriots were the natives. The evil was pur leadership. These are career men doing a career job. No one calls carpenters national heroes for building affordable housing. That title is reserved for those who create pink mist. Vereneration, unwarranted.

Poor misguided fool; I doubt you know anything you write about. For example, the convictions of the people of ASEAN nations, who regard the US involvement in Vietnam as what lead to their collective freedom. You might look up Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore, or the struggle of Indonesia to contain a communist uprising that lead to years and thousands of deaths. My guess is you revere Pol Pot’s solution: “To keep you is no benefit, to destroy you no loss”. You ignore the corruption of Johnson, MacNamara, and Rusk as they violated and undermined those they sent to Vietnam. Again, gaiur superficial and elementary dialog is without value and void of meaning.
