You haven't forgotten how to teach from a fundamental level. You know how the brain works and how to nurture it. Thank you.

Awesome to see that drawing from imagination can be used as a tool to test yourself! It reminds me of weight lifting, except for the art brain. Will definitely do more of these!

I’ve noticed that I’ve been procrastinating drawing from imagination because for whatever reason the experience is really painful! Gotta break through that resistance!

I get it! Start slow, complexity can come with time. Good luck!

I have the same thing happening! I use drawing as a way to process negative thoughts because they will inevitably come up I don't know why. Especially if it is from imagination because there is no reference to escape to if that makes sense? When I recognize that it has nothing to do directly with the drawing per se it helps me get through. I rarely finish what I start but that's okay for now I'm getting better at it. So yeah I just wanted to share with you and apologies if this comment looks like advice slipped under the door lol. Just do you! Your own experience has a lot of value. I'll be glad to hear if you are doing better but that's not an obligation on your part. Keep it up!

Im completely opposite. I have to humble myself to get a reference when i draw. I don't know why i have such a hard time doing it

@@danklegosi6084 Same here. Drawing with reference feels like a test where you get the results immediately - and it is usually a solid F :) (at least for me). Rather intimidating to draw from reference in my opinion.

@@helmetofmeat The answer to the test are right in front of you - with reference is definitely best. From imagination is a serious challenge.

Drawing from memory is important and a foundation in observation is helpful but after 20 + years pf experience doing this stuff, i have a couple bits of knowledge just from my experience personally to share. There are some skills that overlap the drawing from imagination vs observation approach, and there are some skills that help one, and not the other. Ultimately if you wish to become professional you need both sets of skills, and the ability to invent depends on a combination of what you know/recall from observation as well as established principles and theories about form, gesture, proportions, anatomy and other aspects of figure drawing. It also depends on what your goal is with art and the kind or things you wish to do that will dictate how and what you should really focus your study on.

This was a great tip! Was considering doing something similar, but could not figure-out exactly how to do it. I've been looking into study techniques and if I understood correctly, this bootstraps recollection (active process) instead of recognition (passive process) which is a way to promote active learning. Highly recommend looking-up a few "mindmapping technique" YT videos as those explain active learning as a whole really well. All this great info out there for free, what a time to be alive!

Thank you! This was more of an example for others. I've done this particular drawing from memory many times for my classes.
