This will help you dry your filament, filament absorb water that can ruin your print. So here is a simple solution to this. Also Drying your filament 1h on a new roll helps it not to unwind on you.

Hi, I'm Frank my channel is all about 3D printing. I can't get enough of my 3D printer. I make everything and anything out of 3D filament (PLA, PETG and more). As I say a printer that is not printing is a missed opportunity.
I'll be doing electronics, mechanics, computer engineering, DIY, reviews and tutorials.
I update twice a week on Tuesday and Saturdays.
Subscribe to my channel, and don't forget to turn on notifications.

is filament snapping during printing prominent with moisture in the filament?

Oh yes enfin une chaine québecoise! Je viens de commencer l’impression 3d et je cherchais justement une façon de sécher mon filament!

Thank your Frank. There is a XH-W1308 box on thingiverse. I just modified it with one hole for the DC jack and 2 holes for the AC cables. The cable of the sensor is only about 30-40 cm. I would extend it so I can put my box far away from the oven. So guys when buying you should check if the length of the sensor cable is written.

Actually did this last week. Had an old toaster over and when i turn the dial till the heater just turns on, it keeps the temp between 110*F to 115*F. Used an oven thermometer to check the temp, and after about seven hours, my roll of PLA printed fine again.

Nice tip. I spent some hours reading about different types of filament. It explained that filament will absorb moisture and suggested storing it in zip-lock freezer bags. I'm thinking maybe a large Tupperware tub and silica gel packs might help. But I live right next to water (15 second walk out my door) and it gets very humid in summer. So I'm sure I will be needing a dryer as well.

+Duck Landes I will do a quick video on this, but I store mine in a sealed container with an Eva-Dry E-333 Renewable Mini Dehumidifier.

I followed your link to the PrintDry Oven, then from there to their kickstarter page for the filament containers. One advantage I can see with the PrintDry is you can print from the spool while it's in the oven. The advantages of the DIY oven is lower cost and it can heat pizza! I received my MP Select Mini V2 printer yesterday but haven't opened the box yet till I decide where I'm going to set it up. And today picked up a 12-pack of Elmer's glue sticks. I thought I was getting into a fun and simple hobby. But am quickly learning that it actually takes a lot of research, learning, experimentation, and time to get good at 3D printing. Fortunately I have time and patience, and not afraid to read, research, and learn.

I will do a small container rubbermaid style to host the spool while printing...

I think I will probably end up buying a PrintDry Oven. It's a bit over priced I think for what it is, but I really like it's design. And gonna pre-order a 6-pack (or two) of their filament containers.

+Duck Landes Take your time, look at the print in cura layer view and try to imagine what will happen... Plastic is cheap so you can make mistakes. It sure is a learning process, but at least you have a functional printer, my first one was a kit, nothing assemble, you learn a lot, but so much more work, now it works quite well, just printed a 160mm high Samus from the Metroid Game, had to think and tweak the supports for a long time, first print his right foot came off... instagram.com/p/Ba-YkIklbh4/

When I printed for the first time I covered my PETG in a paper bag thinking if it pulls moisture from bread, then it could pull moisture from PETG. Bad idea. Week two I start hearing popping sounds when printing. Now it's in a vacuum sealed bag after baked in the oven.

Will heat drying filament like this fix spools of filament that are brittle? I have 2 spools of a cheap brand that became brittle real quick. They are also not very straight meaning they are a bit wavy as they come off the spool. It makes the filament though to go through small diameter opening of the the Hotends and fittings. I wont be buying that brand ever but am just wondering if I could make them useful by heat drying so they are not a complete waste. Any thoughts?
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 6 лет назад
Hi, in fact it probably would make it even more brittle, you could try a small batch...
@VectorRoll
@VectorRoll 6 лет назад
Frank's 3D shop ok thanks. I might messaround with it a bit and see. I've pretty much written off the spools for the most part. So experimenting won't hurt. Thanks for the reply.

Hi VectorRoll, could you please let us know what is the "cheap brand" to avoid it? Thank you very much for sharing.

Put your spools on a backing sheet and not the racks when doing this... I've never compromised the integrity of plastic or cardboard spools doing this.

I have a filament that left out in the open for a year and definitely it is full of moisture. So, with this method I can dry the filament completely and have a good print with it again? It really help if it does.

I have a monoprice mini.I was wondering if it was worth it to modify the hot end and print bed to print nylon and polycarbonate? If not, what printer do you recommend? We need more Piper!
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 6 лет назад
Hi, the Mini could be capable to print nylon and such, with major modifications. I would use a Prusa for that, ok not the same price, but a MK2 kit is not harder to build then modifying the mini and would give nicer results. Or build an Haribo from scratch as I did, or modify any Prusa i3 clone with a E3D v6 and a MK3 modified X assembly. And you need, an enclosure, Nylon absorbs water really fast, you need a heated enclosure.

Hi Frank. Is your toaster oven powered by the same plug that powers the thermostat or a separate plug? Can you please confirm. (It would make sense for there to be two separate plugs because the thermostat can only handle a max of 12V and 10A DC while the toaster is max 120V 12.5A AC.)
@chimi6877
@chimi6877 6 лет назад
I think i answered my question, from reading a comment on amazon. I should buy a magnetic contactor to help the thermostat control the toaster

Is it still safe to heat food with the same oven that you used for drying your filament? in my case im planning to dry ABS plastic. Awesome video!
@Franks3Dshop

Hi, ABS it gives out nasty fumes, I would not put it in my stove. PETG is better in that regard.

Hi, some people do it with a food dryer also. There is a commercial unit www.printdry.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwnfLVBRCxARIsAPvl82HjeAGMDT06MMnX2RnSEw-HehQJ1toxWifPaN8z0i4SRUG_Hc1qXF8aAiYYEALw_wcB

Do you think we can dry the spool by putting it inside a black plastic bag with some moisture absorber material?
@scottyroberson3532
@scottyroberson3532 3 года назад
Like dessicant?
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 3 года назад
Dessinant does not dry the filament, it draws moisture from the air, you toute filament add moisture in it, you need to dry it.

Did you buy your shirt at the same place? I use my printer bed as my dryer, add box over top, zero dollars and designed for the application. Using an oven is a scary idea to say the least. The chart was handy. Looking forward to the gas and smoke detector videos.
