Q: Can trees get cancer? A: Cancer is a result of a mutation in dna which causes the cell cycle to continue out of control. The issue is, we need the cell cycle to make more cells for growth and healing, but in these two cases the cell cycle is regulated often falling in to a “dormant” stage when complete. Cancer occurs when a cell does not enter the “dormant” phase and continues to replicate. Trees, like all living things, are made up of cells. These cells replicate to help the tree grow. Conclusion: It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility for a tree to get cancer, but thanks to the difference between animal and plant cells along with other factors, it’s much harder for trees to get cancer. Edit: Just looked it up, and yes there are instances of trees getting cancer, but most of the time the cancer is a result of an infection.

Horticulturalist here! Yes trees get sick, and yes they get cancer-ish illnesses. The thing is that it’s usually either galls or burls. Galls are formed in response to a bacteria, virus, insects, or similar agents and are similar to a benign tumor that is usually used as a home or nursery for the agent that caused them. And burls are caused by stress, and we don’t really know what stresses usually cause them. They’re basically the secondary meristem (the part of the tree that makes the wood and bark) going buck wild and growing everything everywhere. They’re not particularly dangerous for the trees and are highly sought after by woodworkers as the appearance of the grain is something like wooden tie-dye. Plants also use a tumor-like mass of undifferentiated cells (essentially stem cells) to heal and repair damage. When the secondary meristem which wraps around the plant like a skin right under the bark is damaged it grows these masses of undifferentiated cells at the damaged part. If these masses are close enough they will fuse together (this is how grafting works!) and line up to start differentiating. Basically if you’re next to bark you become bark, if you’re next to wood you become wood, and so on until the wound is sealed and if possible the damaged sections have been bridged back together. It’s really cool! Edit: calluses are also how micropropagation is done! Make a plant form a callus, put it in a sterile growing media, and instead of becoming part of a plant, it just starts becoming a whole new plant! Dozens of them all at once! One little mass of callus will start popping out roots and shoots that will be separated into their individual cloned plants. A skilled micropropagation lab can fill a greenhouse with just a few plants worth of starting material. Orchids are very commonly grown this way as their seeds are a pain in the Aston work with, only a breeder will want to put up with them. Bananas and pineapples are commonly produced this way as well.
