My husband's uncle is Filipino, When We went to visit for 2 weeks in California, I couldn't walk through the kitchen without him forcing me to eat, amd I don't mean snacks, he would make me eat a full plate...lol I tried tp refuse amd he looked at me disappointed and said, but I made it for you so I sat down and ate everythinghe made...He made gallon freezer bags full of homemade lumpia for us to take home. I am not joking when I say they are food crack super addictive and you can't stop at 1. He was so loving, I wish I had been able to see him again before he passed away Rest in Peace Uncle Bill 💖😘...
The spoon and fork thing is becoming part of Filipino identity. I literally thought before that the rest of the world also use spoon and fork, I mean every Filipino household before had this giant wooden spoon and fork, and last supper painting or embroidery hanging on their dinning room's wall.
History and culture, man. Like our sheer, see-through Barong shirt worn tuck out that becomes our men's formal national wear. The pinoy like other east asian culture, only more so, has a deep and extensive blade (sword) culture. You can see that on the varieties of swords and weapons available throughout the archipelago. Pinoy martial art is not fancy but extremely deadly. So the Spanish or the Kastila whenever they have pinoy guests for dinner dont issue knives. Only spoon and fork. They were afraid that the feast might turn into a massacre. Same with the Barong shirt. Its sheer and worn tuck out so no weapons could be hidden underneath. Its a tribute to our sense of humor that we turn these blatant insults and forms of discrimination into our identity and sense of pride in who we are as a people. Crazy really.
Jokoy is more Filipino that most First generation Filipino-American. Jokoy should have his own TV/cable show, does not need to be all comedy show. He could be a great host.
I gre up eating mostly Mexican food and occasional family outings to Chinese buffets after church. In my teens I began to venture out after school to try new foods. I let my nose choose lol. I passed by a small Filipino market/hot food spot, smelled the most delicious thing ever. I walked in to order that smell lol. It was a bowl of steamed rice drenched in pork adobo with a side of lumpia. I fell in love forever. Filipino food is my first foodie love 😋❤.
I once cooked filippino chicken Adobo for a food contest on Christmas for my husband's predominantly black family and got 2nd place! Everyone loves it and calls me to ask how to cook it
i used to work in jail as a housing deputy. whenever we have a potluck, i bring chicken adobo. shit is usually gone by the time i go on my lunch break.
@Bill Zussman you dont know that. She could be multi racial she could be black or hispanic you dnt know! We come in various shades and colors Bill get used to it lol... Have a great day!
My mom was born and raised in the Philippines, and she taught me to use a spoon and fork like that as well. Just a few years ago, we went to visit my mom’s relatives, and her cousin saw me eat like that at dinner and said, “Wow, you can tell she’s at least part Filipino from how she eats!” 😂
Spent 3 years in Philippines feel that is my home more than US now. I love the filipino dishes (except balut pancit) sisig calderetta adobo lumpia kang kong Laing bangus ampalaya and too many others to name but always had to travel to Icebergs for Halo Halo masarap!
Which pancit did you try? My sister is not fond of it especially pancit bihon, but if its pancit habhab also known as pancit Lucban(the place where its from) she would always eat it and it's one of her favorites.
The Hungry Syrian Wanderer hi man. I saw you in Wil’s vlogs as well so i decided to check out your vlogs. You’ have an amazing positive personality so I’m subscribing. Hope you get that 50k subs soon!
That's the beauty of Filipino dishes, it has an element of surprise. May not look enticing at first glance but when you do try it, its heavy-handed plating will be the last thing on your mind.
I agree, the foods presented here doesn't look even a little bit of the real thing served locally here in PH in my own perspective it looked dull to me :)
I've been in the Philippines for two months and I loved their "isaw" which means roasted chicken intestines and you get to dip it with different sauces. And "tapsilog" which is a mix of fried rice and seasonings and "tapa" which means fried steak or pork meat and fried egg. They are nice folks too.
Damn! Jo Koy sounds Mexican-American when describing his family and what they eat, to even the way they eat!! I worked with a Filipino Doctor, he had his family make us Filipino food for an office meeting.... It was HEAVEN, so YES, I LOVE Filipino food!!!...
Filipino food is so freakin incredible and underrated in my opinion!!! We just did a Filipino Pancit episode to try and help spread the word!! Awesome stuff with this one guys!!!
adobo has a number of varieties depending on the meat used - the basic and must the meat is stewed in mix of soy, vinegar and lots of garlic. As for the "meat", you can have pork, chicken, squid or a mix; can also have deep fried tofu as extender. to add some kick, chili flakes can do the trick. a sweet and sour variety can be achieved by adding pineapple bits. there are a lot of ways to cook and enjoy adobo.
I just love what he said more or less "when you go into a house, we don't care if you're full, you're about to get more full". This made me chuckle because this is so true.
I spent 4 Months in Makati and LOVED my time there. So much great food they didnt get to here. I did eat a Balut and it will be the last time i have that. My favorite bar food type dish i had is SISIG. It was amazing!!!!!!!
So you spent 4 months in the city? If you really want to experience the Philippines you need to get into the province. I live north of Iloilo away from the city and it is much better.
“You don’t need knives, We you those for weapons”🍴🥄 _ Jo Koy One my favorite comedians..hands down. I agree w/ everything Jo says about the duck embryo (Balut) I don’t like it after tasting it before. Cambodians eat it too
Watching this make me reminisce the times when I was still living in Philippines. The halo-halo, Inasal, Sisig, Fishballs... I could go on. Damn, I miss it
Dang idk how I've just now seen this. I've been wanting to open up a little Filipino spot in my area as there is literally not one anywhere and this has re lit my enthusiasm for it.
I once ate pig testicles that my grandma (lolamom) gave me. She also didn't tell me what I was eating until I finished eating it. When your Filipino you learn to not be a picky eater
Rande Thorman Lumpia can quickly deplete whenever i go to a party... And i never got the chance to eat one except at homeee. Ubod is the most common one but i love sariwa the most.
I remember one time a friend made pancit for us. She called me to taste if the pancit is not too salty. She gave a plate full of pancit to taste. 😱😱😱And i was like i thought i was just tasting the thing. 😨😨😨
Joy koy is the man. Also some advice for anyone that doesn't know how to fight. If you're about to get your ass beat, pull your pants down and shit in your hand. No one will mess with you.
I’ve recently fell in love with Filipino foods, I had a neighbor years ago, she would make lumpia and Pancit and I so loved it. But been watching a lot of travel Vloggers in the Philippines and have been craving the food. I love arrow caldo and Halo Halo( obsessed) .. so good, I’d love to visit the country one day and experience this wonderful friendly culture. Great video , so funny... Balut.... nope, me either couldn’t do it .. 👍👍
Arroz Caldo is one of the most popular comfort food in the Philippines. It is a chicken and rice porridge flavored with ginger, garlic, onion and fish sauce. It is similar to a congee. The dish has Chinese origins but the Spaniards gave it the name arroz caldo which means hot rice.
I am Filipino here in Cali and when I miss my family I just start making Filipino food. Im no expert because I had my yayas and my mom cook for me but you learn a lot on RU-vid.
"We don't need knives, we use those for weapons" I don't know if it's true but I read somewhere that when we were colonized, the Spanish didn't give us knives because Filipinos with knives make a dangerous combination... 😂😂😂
Most of are native fighting skills involves shorts swords or knives because we use them both as a weapon and a farming tool like how viking mostly use Axes short swords and arrows in fighting it because they also use it for farming or labor
My filipino mom told me this joke a long time ago. It sounds better when said with a filipino accent. Why are pinoys not allowed to vote? Because they'll just eat the balut.
Filipino food is just amazing!!! One of my longest time friends is Filipino. She was actually born in Seattle, we met up while both living in Cali and now we both live in WA lol .... LOVE her family, parents are both Filipino and just AMAZING. Her and i were inseparable 😍😍😍
Eating balut, 1. Make sure its hot, its gross when not hot and fresh. 2. U need good spicy coconut vinegar (with herbs and spices some call it "sukang pinakurat" not too sour) and salt. I think the secret in eating balut is in the vinegar recipe mix. Without vinegar, it makes it eating gross also. 3. After opening, sip the hot balut liquid. 4. Put little salt, vinegar, and drink. It does change the balut flav.in the mouth. Then repeat while eating balut meat. 5. For first timer, eat it in night or in dark place :D
@@michellehyman8468 i understand making something good taste better . But choosing to eat something "gross" like this comment implied , doesnt make sense to me. Its "gross" without vinagar , ok so unless your starving and have no other options , just eat something else!
I always get Pork Adobo from Adobo Express gourmet food truck in Orange County, CA. Garlic rice, pork adobo, fried egg with runny yoke on top. Sriracha on top is a must. Super tender and flavorful large chunks of pork.
@Adjie Damaso I am from California. My mom is Spanish-Filipina. I am more pinoy than you know. Ikaw saan ka nakatira? Ipag luto mo ako nang arroz caldo. Ang sarap nun!
There exists an alternative to Balut. It's called Penoy (pë-nöy). It has all the goodness of Balut, without the duck and its feathers. Balut always gets featured though for novelty.
I love filipino food, I'd say it's my second favorite kind of food after puerto rican food, and I also wonder why, neither of those foods are mainstream
As a Filipino American, for me I think local joints aren’t great. Filipino food is amazing when down right. For me none of the local joints in my area best my dads cooking. When Filipino is cooked with great cooks like in restaurants like in this video I think it could get more respect. People say it’s super unhealthy but I don’t think it’s different than any Asian food and American. There is also healthy varieties in fruits And fresh fish. I wouldn’t say its better than Chinese or Korean food but definitely not shit.
I saw him last year at the Brea improv. He's hilarious and really nice in person. He gave me a bunch of free merchandise without me asking for it. He stopped signing autographs and walked over to the merch counter to grabbed some shirts asking what my size was and gave them to me.
Okay, Balut technically isn't a dish _locally_ . But if it were overseas, they'll claim that it is. Balut is a duck egg sold on the streets. Basically, it's "street food".

A Filipino dish that I haven’t heard or mentioned is Siopao,- shoo pow (chicken, pork , and egg stuffing wrapped in a white dough steamed and can be frozen to be eaten later. A dish I frequently make. Learned it from my mother. RIP. Almost like a hot pocket.
That's the thing with jeepney, thier chef isn't Filipino so they don't cook traditional Filipino food... they add some kind of twist so you can't really say it's classic anymore :( They are also very popular so the other traditional Filipino food places don't get noticed as much...
Thats HOW THE HALO HALO should be. I can see that the ingredients are abundant and less in Ice. buthere in the Philippines the halo halo is 25% ingredients 54635234% ICE. LMAO
Because you bought the cheap ones 20 to 40 pesos. When you buy halo-halo in the streets it is most likely to have 50% ice. Try buying it on a fast food chain or restaurant where the price goes from 150 to 300 pesos. Try buying halo halo in the provinces where ingredients are cheaper, I guarantee you that it will have more ingredients than ice and it will have more than 8 ingredients. Like banana, garbanzos, nata de coco, macapuno, ube, langka, monggo, beans, etc.
It's true. Every single time I have visited my daughter's in laws I am treated to excellent food. Filipino, Cambodian, Mexican and vietnamese with American bbq too. Damn excellent food. And they always insist they make a plate to be taken home with you too. 😍
When I was about 11 years old, my best friends mom offered me this and I knew I couldn't refuse because that's disrespectful, she only gave me the nugget tho. As soon as I ate it they all laughed at me LOL. I'm white, I had no idea what it was at the time. 13 years later and Filipino food is now my favourite, Still will never touch Balut again tho.😂
Tip for eating balut 1. Eat balut in the dark, seriously balut is delicious, its just that if you see the bird? you'll be sadden by the appearance but the taste is really good.
I found it nasty but my cousins grandma bribed me by promising to make those Filipino sweet cheese bread from scratch if I tried and successfully ate balut, lol. I damn near gagged because of the texture and of course my palate is different since I am Black but I took it like a champ to get that freaking delicious sweet cheese bread hot and fresh!🤗
GBCuddLe yeah Americans are so used to salt and pepper lmao they don’t have spices or herbs which is why their taste buds is bland. Even McDonald’s is so fucking bland
Filipino is my comfort food ♡ it is life♡ I wish I would have spent more time in the kitchen with my LOLA when she was alive to learn how to make all of my favorites. I guess i just thought i would have her forever....
I need all of those. Except the balut. That's a hard pass. Our Filipino neighbors taught my parents how to make Lumpia, and if I could eat that all day, every day, without worrying that my ass would BECOME the living room couch, I definitely would. Now I need to make some Lumpia and put my face in it.
When Jo Koy specifically says he won't eat something, don't take it as a joke lol Sean learned today! Loved the video! Would've loved to see you eat pancit though.
