MANILA has the world's oldest CHINATOWN After an amazing time in Batad and Banaue, we took a night bus back to MANILA and returned to our Guesthouse in BINONDO.
This guesthouse is right in the heart of Binondo so was a great location for us to spend a day exploring Binondo and Quiapo, and for Lee to finally try HALO HALO

thanks for visiting the miraculous church of the Black Nazarene - the Quiapo Church..i always make it to a point to visit and attend the mass in Quaipo church whenever I happened to come to Manila, and God blesses you both for showing, visiting and praying in some of the most famous Philippine churches including Quiapo church. Congratulations as well for succeeding to come to Carriedo Street, that street that leads to Quiapo church as only few vloggers have the guts to intrude that street as its loaded with vendors from all walks of lives, chaotic but you can really feel the truest vibe of "real Filipino masses market".

Hi Steve 👋 Yes, the poor Pasig river has had a bad time of it... I'll be showing more in an upcoming video. I'm so pleased you agree that the halo halo looked so much better in its original state... definitely a thing of beauty rather than some amorphous purple stuff 😂🤣

Thanks Mandy & Lee for another wonderful and honest video. 👍🏻 When I was a student, a friend invited me to join him on his trip to Manila. At the time I had heard Manila was not the cleanest city so I declined. I’ve since regretted that decision and learned to accept every location for what they are-not to mention visiting with a “local” was a lost opportunity! Wow-that coffee place looks wonderful. Surprisingly the price didn’t go up for many options and only a tad for others! Lee was wise to ask for no sugar. I found in my travels that many places use a lot of sugar-so good move IMHO. Worth a detour! ☕️

Oh, Maurice... that's such a bummer as it would have been such an interesting experience, visiting Manila with a local. It's great though that you've learnt from the decision. They were seriously the best value drinks, and I think they might appear again in another Manila video... or maybe I cut that clip, I can't remember 😂 ~ Mandy

Guys that's not a river. It's what we call an estero (estuary) which is like a drainage canal. They're usually smelly especially in crowded places like that. But yes, they should really do something about the smell.
@FrugalTravellers

Hopefully they can do something because it was pretty bad. Noone wants to live near such pollution. 🙏 Manila is such an awesome city. 😊

Try out the famous all time vegan Filipino dish named Tortang Talong ( Fried Egglant). Can be found anywhere. Palawan is famous for seafood dishes. Try the Kinilaw Ke-Nee-Laaü as ( Fish Ceviché) and Sea Grass / Sea Grapes salad. For Frugal Travellers, Cebu and Bohol islands are very affordable compared to Palawan.

Truly enjoyed this video of Chinatown 💚 Mang Inasal is my go2 here in 🇵🇭 I love their bbq chicken! Razon’s halohalo is my fav! Rich creamier taste with just macapuno (coconut sport), sweetened banana (saba-also used in turon and banana cue), piece of leche flan on top) similar to creme brûlée) and evaporated milk. Pinakbet 💚 Filipinos cook it with shrimp paste. Filipinos love sardines. I usually buy the spicy ones. Looking forward to your Palawan videos. Take care 🙏

Hi Cindy 👋 Busy Manila indeed... I wish I'd videoed more of the busy streets and markets, but it seemed just too difficult to walk in amongst the crowds! Yes, we were definitely more fortunate than you with our ferry trip... but there was one issue, which messed us around a bit... you'll see on Saturday 🤗🫣 ~ Mandy

We mix the ingredients when we eat halo halo :), about the black pasig river, San miguel Corporation is doing its best to clean up the river. When it comes to vegetarian dish, filiponos by default Pinakbet. Filipino's has different taste buds compared to other ASEAN countries. We like sour,bitter and salty foods. Glad you are enjoying Manila, thanks for visiting Philippines :). Will watch your island hopping Palawan

I admire how you're so honest and down to earth. You've now given me a reason to visit the old Quiapo Churh - the Minor Basilica Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, haven't been there for the longest time since the 80's😢. Chinatown too. Btw the spiderweb electrical and telecom lines are up there because Manila gets flooded when the monsoon season comes. So building an underground wiring system is not advisable and too costly. The river or eatero as we call it in chinatown is such an eyesore and an embarrassment, you're absolutely right it stinks and always clogged despite efforts to dredge and keep it clean. Thank you for sharing this video. Keep safe.

Thanks for this fascinating information. 🙏. That makes total sense about the overhead wiring. We loved our time exploring there and even though some parts are rough round the edges we thoroughly enjoyed Manila. It's the wonderful, happy people that really make it special too. 🙏😊💕

Hello M&L, It's hard to impressed by the Manila shown on the video. That river looks like an open sewage 🤢 and them overhead phone lines aren't pretty to the eyes. (I wonder, do they still use landlines? Or are those lines used for home Internet / TV?) On the positive side, Filipinos have beautiful smiles and seem genuinely friendly. 🤩 Catch you guys later, take care 🙋🏻‍♂️
@FrugalTravellers
@FrugalTravellers Месяц назад
Hello SERGIO Yes, Binindo isn't the prettiest of areas but it does have its own gritty charm. I'm not sure exactly what the overhead lines are for, or if they're still in use, but they're always fascinating to see! I completely agree about the Filipino people having lovely smiles, and they are just so friendly and helpful. They've kept such amazing positivity in spite of the terrible hardships the country has faced over the years. Thank you so much for your insightful comment, SERGIO, and we hope this finds you well 🙏🤗 ~ Mandy
