We Filipinos would NEVER change Canada, if you compare Canada to the Philippines Canada is doing WAY Better than the Philippines lol 🤣 There's a saying that goes: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" and that's exactly what we Filipinos are doing, Canadians doesn't need to adjust themselves just to make other immigrants feel better.. It's the immigrants that have to do the adjustments not the other way around.

Very well said😊👏🏻 But how come filipinos were still the one who are adjusting for the foreign immigrants in the Philippines? Isn't that unfair? 😂😂😂 The immigrants should be the one who are adjusting right? Filipinos have been adjusting for everyone since they were born. To be fair, foreign people should also take some linguistics exam (just like the Ielts, Oet, Pte, teofl, etc.) for them to enter the Philippines... 😂

I think it made a huge difference that the Philippines were colonized by Spain then the United States. It made the people more accepting to other cultures or races. It's somewhat easier for Filipino immigrants to assimilate to the Canadian western society as they are somewhat exposed already to this type of society back home. From the everyday exposure of American pop cultures, music & movies even American politics & news. A lot of Filipino have this sense that Canadians & Americans are not really that different..lol. Plus the majority of Filipinos if not all are Catholics or Christians. They pretty much celebrate almost the same holidays like the Canadians like Christmas, Easters, or Halloween. So yeah I guess that's the advantage of trying to adjust & live in a new country like Canada 🇨🇦👍

Filipino here👋! Living in Toronto. Thanks for your kind review on us. Well, most of us were raised to adapt to situations/place we are in. We try to do our best to respect the country we are in. And before we even leave our country, Philippines, we won’t be given clearance to fly abroad without taking PDOS (Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar) which basically teaches us what to do and not to do in the country we’re going. Although there are some who taint it but it actually send a message to us (overseas Filipino workers) to make our country proud of us.

I think in every country where there's a community of Filipinos, change comes in both parties. For example, we Filipinos in the Middle east experienced big changes in our lives. We are earning more and as a result, we are now able to provide the needs of our family. At the same time, we change the people in the middle East by teaching them the value of hard work, education and resilience.

The problem is Filipinos hardly ever stand up for themselves and let themselves be pushed around. The live in care giver who was looking after my grandma had a chemistry degree from the Philippines I asked her "Why are you doing a 4 month community college certificate in food handling?. You should have applied to do a Master in Chemistry in Canada" instead they'd count your 4yrs chemistry degree Philippines as an equivalent undergrad failing that they'll grant you a qualifying year and then let you into a full masters program. She gave me the I wish I knew that and just accepted her fate rather then trying. Filipinos sometimes don't know any better and just accept things or make things up based on there assumption without any fact and try to post it as fact. My sister and I were born here but her husband and his family are fobs, constantly they make wrong assumptions of Canada and were always trying to "guide" them in the right direction.

Filipino/a are the Perfect Models as Immigrants. Their culture fits well with Canadian culture. Filipino/a come to Canada to contribute to Canada and make a new life. What makes them such a perfect model is their belief in the same God as Canadians + their unique peaceful characters + willing to fit in and become like us Canadians. Yes those who I have met in Canada can be called Peaceful & Gentle People.

I'm a Filipino and I live here in Canada, i'm from New Brunswick. I would say, changing the way it is will only cost us immigrants and the locals a massive misunderstanding. We came here to live and not to colonize. Canadian people are so understanding(not to mention that there are some who are hateful to us immigrants for no reasons at all, also experience racism once but it's all good anyway) and that for me is enough. They accepted us as who we are and we did the same. I don't think changing the culture will give us any benefits at all so I say, it's good as it is.

Some Canadians are patriotic like Filipinos are we do not want our country taken over until the late 60s Canada was 97 percent white research this and was built by Scots .I agree if we have to have some immigrants Filipinos are a good choice. But ask yourself this would you want the Philippines to have the same immigration polices as Canada and have your founding people reduced to a minority in their own country? I think not.

The same facts and situations apply here in Australia. We simply love Filipinos and welcome them above many other cultures who simply do not assimilate as easily. Filipinos adapt, whilst still proudly showing their own proud culture. They are honest, religious and yes, hard working. The women are simply gorgeous and remain feminine, which makes for a perfect wife and mother. Unfortunately, its not easy for them to come here. Aussies love Filipinas!

Filipinos are a great fit for Canada because Canada historically is reputed for being a peace keeping nation...polite and caring in general and God fearing. By model, family is key and respect for their neighbours is a trait shared by both nations. Filipinos will never insult a host nation by trying to impose their ways, but rather assimilate themselves because entitlement is not in their vocabulary... They earn their keep and they work hard to earn respect. I'm not saying all, but by comparison to some other immigrants...a much higher percentage.

When we go back to the Philippines now we adjust again and adapt our own culture. Same when you visit our country ( Philippines) you have to respect our culture. 🤗

@@ocahkipihikew I'm sorry you had to witness this behavior from someone from my culture. Sadly growing up, I've witnessed this behavior even from elders who should know better. A lot of us don't know our full history or have been fed portions of it to distort the truth of our colonialism and are bred to be model minorities. While learning to be an ally for the Indigenous groups in Canada (which means learning about history especially the ones intentionally overlooked- ie. residential schools, lack of justice missing women) I discovered similar experiences within Filipino history. We also fought and we also lost and we did what we can to adapt. I'm proud to be Filipino and see our potential beyond being polite immigrants and servants and that growth goes hand in hand by becoming strong allies with Indigenous, Black, and other groups experiencing discrimination.
@xxdalionxx
@xxdalionxx 6 месяцев назад
@@ocahkipihikew that's very unfortunate.and I am so sorry this happened to you. I'm Filipino and I personally feel that indigenous Canadians and Americans to be my ancestral brothers and sisters. And treat them the same way I treat other Filipinos. I see many similarities in regards to culture as well as appearance. And I really care about the community and it's well being. Most Filipinos will treat others well. But unfortunately not all Filipinos are as open minded or as accepting as others. I know very well that one bad experience with one particular racial group can ruin a person's perspective on the entire racial group. Many are susceptible to it. Born and bred Canadians in urban areas like Toronto and Vancouver less so but for immigrants who have very little exposure to other people groups are the most susceptible. I love in rural Ontario a place where immigrants are less than 3% of the population and as a Filipino I behave extra well as to not ruin the Filipino image even though I speak ,talk, and walk like any other Caucasian Canadian having lived in Canada since I was 7. I even curse and say full send as much as the average hockey boy but cause of my skin colour I have to represent an entire country to the people around me in my everyday life.

What you said are true about the Filipinos. It is because the Culture of Philippines and Canada are almost the same.. Both Canada and Filipinos speak English, Celebrates Christmas and other holidays, both have democracy, eat bacon, had western values and cultures etc etc.. But not all Filipinos are like that. Some Filipinos are muslims who had almost similar attitudes like the other muslim groups in Canada..

Filipino muslim in Philippine majority of them are businessmen. They sell so many stuff during holidays or xmas because they make money on that.. 😄

Billy Murray That are True,, Here in our Country White people had more Privileges than Non white people. Because White people can pay more money than non whites. I rarely heard that white people speaks in our language even if they live here more than 10 years or more but no one really cares Because we can speak english also. White people lived here with good big houses or condos but most non whites lived in an ordinary house or rent.. White people here can get easy promotions in work than the Non whites but no one complains about it. We just accept the Rules of "White Privilege".... But are those Filipinos you mentioned ALSO wants to destroy canada like they want Sharia law or wanted to make more mosque and demand to change the canadian constitution into more Sharia, kill the queen of England, death to infidels?

Watch out! Most filipinos are backstabbers, gossipers and suffer severe "crab mentality" (Especially the filipino women who just migrated here) Also they have poor assimilation when coming in to this country. Most filipinos should go back, they are not meant for the west. Also make sure you keep an eye on your bags or wallets, because when a filipino is around, your belongings might dissapear in a blink of an eye.

There are few good reasons why most Filipinos have the ability to assimilate into different society, especially in western countries. 1. Western influence, we've been colonized by Spain and the US for many, many years. We've been exposed to different cultures. 2. Filipinos are very tolerant and generally friendly, we embrace different cultures and traditions and enjoy other cuisines other than ours. 3. "Utang na loob" (debt of gratitude), welt felt indebted or obliged to do good things in return for the good opportunity given to us. I am not sure if this tradition exists in other culture but this common in Filipino culture. We believed in the saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" I think those are the characteristics makes Filipinos likable to other cultures.

I totally agree. 4. Also our accent is not as strong as many Asian countries. 5. Pakikisama culture - we strive to blend to the group where we are at, although this culture also makes as stick together as a group because Western culture is more individualistic

I agree that Filipinos make a good immigrant model for the same reasons you have mentioned. Filipinos just know how to respect and appreciate different cultures, and their adaptive and friendly nature can never become a threat to any country. They are mostly skilled in their profession and when treated with respect, they will remain loyal to their employer. Filipino traits that will be advantageous to other cultures would be: their nature in staying close to family, keeping old friends but being open to new friendships, providing their children a globally competitive education, working hard towards job security, and making time for faith and worship.

From a linguistic point of view, politeness and humility is pretty much integrated into the Filipino vocabulary where specific words or phrase are uttered just for the sake of being polite. Kind of like the Japanese's polite-yes "Hai"(はい) and/or ''desu''(です) which is uttered at the end of every sentence just for the purpose of being polite. The Japanese are probably a slightly more polite people but I guess the key difference is that Filipinos speak English and are hence, more adaptable.

@ohiopines14

Mr.Satoshi Nakamoto is correct. We added the word "po" at the end of every Tagalog sentence to emphasize politeness to the person we are speaking with. (even in writing). The other form of polite word is"opo" This is actually mean a "yes" in English but with a touch of politeness on it. Usually we used it when we speak to the elderly but sometimes we used it also with our regular conversation with others (non elderly) to show politeness. Let say you asked. "Have you finished your homework? ". I would say."No yet." In Tagalog- "Hindi pa PO." Sometimes we associate tagalog with english (TAGLISH) so we say "Not yet PO" ;)

DakeBaloVEVO Not true. I grew up in the Visayas of working class parents (educated parents who are NOT landed, NOT business owners). As early as i can remember, my mom would speak to me in English and when i entered Nursery/ Kindergarten, English was already taught in class. So when i started Grade 1 i was already conversant and read simple english textbooks. So yeah, English is widely used and taught all over the Philippines.
@Wanitetch
@Wanitetch 6 лет назад
DakeBalo, I should know better than you because I was born and raised in Mindanao. I know the first few words a baby speaks in Visayas and Mindanao are in English and that's regardless of the child's parents' social status. When I reached grade 3, I cried and didn't want to go back to school because I felt forced to study a new language that was foreign to me and that language was Tagalog. I was fluently conversant on both Bisaya and English languages. Prior to third grade, I could only read and write in English because it was the only medium if instruction at school and at home. I could speak Bisaya but that I have learned to read and write in Bisaya and Tagalog texts only during high school. Believe me, it was so hard learning Tagalog even during university days and we all hated the subject. Back then we had the brightest and strictest public school teachers. We had only one FM station, NBC, that plays 50% Filipino music and 50% American classic on Sundays and all American English songs on Saturdays and weekdays hosted by excellent American sounding DJs who were prohibited to utter even one local Filipino word. The only one TV network was RPN's TV9. I grew up learning nothing but proper English from this chanel whose news casters sound near native American speakers. This Network too, rarely aired Filipino programs and movies. They usually aired American movies, programs, and series on Mondays through Saturdays and exclusive Chinese cook show and Chinese TV series on Sundays. It was in the early 80s when the Philippines was still a powerful country in Asia. I'm sad for the kids born beyond that generation especially recently that from nursery to grade 3, children are taught local dialects and start to learn English only on the 4th level. It's going backwards and I do understand why the younger generation has weak foundations in English language.

The reason why we aren’t ever vilified is that, as you say, Filipinos adapt into the local cultures well and are more closely tied to western ideals than, say, the Chinese. The Chinese specifically get a bad image because the Chinese tend to be extremely eastern and hold very disagreeable behaviors at times for westerners.

Karaoke is not a Filipino thing. It's a Japanese thing. Filipinos only adopted it when Japanese exported it to the Philippines. Most Filipino homes, rich or poor, may have some form of a karaoke equipment like a stand-alone karaoke machine or a simple karaoke microphone and a TV or stereo system.
@lionhearted1969
@lionhearted1969 6 лет назад
@Pacho_Hubu...I can't confirm that, sorry. If you can provide a link to prove your claim, then I would appreciate it. However, based on the articles that I read, it is Daisuke Inoue, a Japanese musician who invented karaoke in 1971. As what I've understand, Inoue didn't patent his invention so four years later, in 1975, Roberto del Rosario, a Filipino, has 'developed' a similar machine based on the existing 'karaoke machine' that Inoue had invented.
@bringbacon5153

lionhearted1969 the inventor is roberto del rosario you can google it though
@lionhearted1969
@lionhearted1969 6 лет назад
Bring Bacon...Not true at ll. You should understand very well when you read articles. Roberto del Rosario developed his 'Sing-along System' a karaoke machine in 1975. Karaoke was invented by Inouke in 1971, four years before Roberto created his ''Sing-along System'. The technology was invented by Inoue and Roberto's sing-along machine is an innovation based on that technology. So Roberto is just an innovator of the karaoke, not inventor. Otherwise, the patent name 'karaoke' would have taken a Filipino name. Karaoke is a Japanese word which means 'Empty Orchestra'.

Look at every part of the world where they emigrate and you'll see that they are the ones who assimilate into the culture of their host country. I am a Filipino-Canadian living in Greater Vancouver area. We Filipinos can assimilate quickly that is why we don't even need to form a community in order to survive. I lived in Richmond, B.C. and in Surrey, B.C. Richmond is like China or Hong Kong. The city is so Chinese, signs are in Chinese, everything is in Chinese. You come to Surrey, and the same thing is happening, it's India. I am not against this trend, but trying to change Canada is not a good thing. At work and in the streets, people in Surrey, even speak to you in Punjabi, when in fact they see you as not Indian-looking. When in Richmond, same thing, people will speak to you in Chinese, when you don't speak Chinese. Canada has two official languages: English and French. When you are in Canada, you should at least know the basic English, that's why these people formed their own communities so they can survive. Filipinos don't have to. You can see Filipinos everywhere even in the remotest regions of Canada.

Filipino and Canadians are known to be kind hearted and good people so there's no problem about us, and filipinos also known to be non-confrontational and less aggressive that we let ourself accept insult or compliments that sometimes can be annoying, but in general filipino are respecful towards other culture and im pretty sure about that. And also were pretty much "westernized" so we can easily adjust on other euro or north american countries. Thank you so much, sir ☺ Sorry for my bad English.

Filipinos are the least oriental in the orient! Because of history, Filipinos have been acculturated with a plethora of influences which make them more flexible and adaptable. In general, Filipinos are just happy, ever curious, and would probably start or engage in a conversation with non-Filipinos. I have traveled to many countries and without being biased, I would say Filipinos are probably among the nicest, ever helpful people on earth! Of course, we Filipinos also have our weaknesses. We may be open to many cultures but in my opinion, Filipinos tend to be weak in terms of our collective national identity. Because of the varied historical influences, our cultural identity is not as strong as the Thais, or Japanese for instance. There's a kind of identity crisis, if you may- a subconscious quest for what truly is authentic Filipino. When I meet a Filipino in another country, almost always, he'or she would voluntarily flaunt the information that some Spanish or Chinese blood runs through his or her veins (as if that would make him/her superior than other FIlipinos!) but when you ask him or her if he or she speaks Spanish/Chinese, that person can not even speak the language. One ironic thing about many Filipinos is when our country, people, or culture is being criticized, we are uber-sensitive about it. We retaliate irrationally. What I'm trying to say is we FIlipinos should just take it easy, be confident, and equally proud to be just the way we are - Filipinos. Period. There is no need for pretense or facade. We should just embrace the beauty of "fusion" whether in terms of our cuisine, arts, design, or how we express ourselves. Embrace the beautiful East-West paradox of being a Filipino and I think this is something that should be developed in the country's educational system. There is power in fusion and that should likewise be the overriding theme and even a competitive edge in its development trajectory as a nation.. :)

3 EXCELLENT points. One other thing about Filipinos is that they don't keep to themselves as much as other Asians. They are more open, more inclusive. They know how to get along with others.

I think Filipinos do a great job of assimilating unlike some culture who segregate themselves to pockets in most cities.Its also easier for most Filipinos to be a part of a community because they can speak english well.

2:55 "Filipinos: I have not heard anything bad" - I think it's because most Filipinos who work abroad are more educated and hardworking than the "filipinos" in the Philippines. OFW's (overseas filipino workers) or Filipino migrants are concerned about reputation - they are "representing" us in a way, and doesn't want to put a bad image on our country. I think it's sad that the only time that Filipinos will become more "hardworking" and "successful " is if they'll go abroad. We are sending our best people abroad, and the ones left here in the Philippines are lazy... like me hahaha 😂🤣 I'm so lazy I want a cure 😣😅

Mr Panic Attack you are wrong in your thinking. The reason why filipinos work hard in countries like canada is because we arent really lazy people as our country would have us to believe (juan tamad). It is just that working hard in countries such as canada is paid for in kind. Whereas in the philippines, you can work as hard as you can but you will still be underpaid. Hence there is no motivation to work that hard. Filipinos arent lazy, you can simply go to those destitutue people collecting plastic bottles or selling rice cakes, balot or peanuts on the wee hours of the morning and all they get are chump change compared to the same amount of hard work that filipinos are paid in canada.

Mr Panic Attack the cure is to work hard and get high salary. Overseas Filipinos Workers (OFW) has nothing to do with you for being lazy. Dont generalize us. We're not lazy like you.

One of the inborn nature of Filipinos is that we can immediately adapt in our surroundings, we can still find a way to entertain ourselves even in our worst situations, we work hard, and most of all we protect each other immensely, no matter you're a stranger you hit one Filipino the whole nation will hit back on you. But we don't mostly go out for attention, since We go to other countries with a goal in mind and that is to help our families back in the Philippines. That's why we are also called underdogs, because we may not always start a fight but We will be sure to end it with us being the victor.

My wife was born in the Philippines and arrived here when she was 9 yrs old. We have 4 children, ranging from 26 yrs old down to 15 yrs. old. I have nothing but praise for my wife and her (and now my) family… from my in-laws to my wife's extended family. Over the years we have integrated into one another's culture and traditions. It's been a rewarding experience, no doubt!

*Im speaking this on behalf of Filipinos working abroad whether in the US, Canada, Middle East.....etc.... that filipinos are a well diverse people or should i say, right from moment we learned to talk and understand, we were already went through some socio ecological adaptation from our surroundings so with this, we were trained and able to adjust in any way such in religion, politics, and even the traditions*

They will not change, they will adapt that's one of the characteristic of being Filipino, one good example is when i am taking a vacation in my province when the people know that you are from manila they're the one who adjust for you even it's hard for them to speak in tagalog they will try their best to talk to you in tagalog even though it is not their mother tongue language of my province, in exchange for their adjustment i am the one who speak in mother tongue language of my province 😂😂, it's crazy though but that's how we adjust for each other.

I just notice that they don’t impose their culture and traditions wherever they migrate. Check europe for example, when refugees came, they demand to have various things like new places of worship and special respect to their religion and prophet.. and when ask why they want these things, they have the audacity to claim its because their religion is the true religion. Filipinos don’t do that.. they just keep their heads down and grind.

I got a plan to study in Canada for college, as my fanily got a history in Canada for years. We Filipinos are adaptable, ranging from working to a hot, humid country to a cold area (like my mother in UK). From my experience, I learn how to speak in english due to my exposure in english TV shows and the english subject in kinder. cheers from the Philippines!
