Right after the Korean War, Korea was literally the poorest country in the world. General MacArthur said it would take 100 years for the country to recover. Everything was destroyed. But now in 71 years, Korea has become the 10th largest economy in the world. The blood and sacrifice of soldiers in the Korean War were not wasted. Because of them, there is Korea now.

I have been visiting South Korea since 2011. I was overly interested in learning and understanding Korean History. Furthermore, I was curious when I saw the Filipino names at The War Memorial Of Korea. As a Pinoy myself, I started to research about it. On other trips to Korea, I had special experiences in the Subway, train stations, or typical sightseeing tour locations. Some old men reached me. Some started shaking my hand, even hugging me or crying. My Korean friends translated for me and said, they fought together with or saved the lives by Filipinos. They just wanted to thank you for surviving and that I looked like his Filipinos mates. Well, that was special. And last April I visited my Korean friends again, and when my friend was drunk, he also started to thank me, that he has a wonderful life now. Yes, that was special too.

US deployed 1.78 million and it's more than 200 times of Filipino soldiers and they're still being bashed by stupid people. So I think it's a long way to go for us to fully appreciate Philippine for their sacrifices but I hope we'll get there.

Thank you guys. My grandpa fought in Korean War and Vietnam war. I’m so thankful of him fighting for the Philippines and for other allied countries. He was a Philippine army then recruited by the US to fight in Korea and in Vietnam. When he died at the age of 91 someone announced it at the podium that he’s had 20 plus medals 😢😢😢. I didn’t really pay attention to it because I was young at that time when he passed away. Now I realized how tough he was and I’m very grateful, also because of him we all migrated in the US and have a better life. I’m very proud and I’m always grateful. We should always thankful for all the fallen soldiers, veterans and troops today for their sacrifices and services!!! Mabuhay!!!

Vietnam war was mess. Philippines should never get involve in a war that initiated by Americans. It was different from Korean war, where the communist was the first aggressor. Filipinos never fought in Vietnam war. The PH government that time only sent non- combatant personnel like Doctors and Engineers for rebuilding purposes. This is the reason why the first country that the Vietnam leadership visited after Vietnam war was the Philippines to show of gratitude because Filipinos did not support the war which the US started.

Maybe it's because I'm an INFJ, but I see myself as being part of continuing Filipino-Korean history by being a teacher for kids here. I'm probably the first Filipino person they've ever met. A lot of Filipinos work here but not in English teaching jobs. I had the privilege of growing up in Canada so I am eligible for English teaching positions here. Jessica-- thank you very much for giving tribute to the Filipino soldiers who volunteered to protect Korea, gave up their lives for freedom and helped Korea what it is today. This happened just right after WWII when the whole Philippines was devastated and still recovering from the damage. But more than 7,000 Filipino volunteers went there to help protect South Korea. My father who was a WWII veteran was supposed to go there but decided to stay in the Philippines to finish his degree. Eventually he came to the US to pursue his graduate degree in engineering. Some of his friends, though, did not make it back home. This very special relationship between Korea and Philippines is bound throughout history. And thank you for your love of the Filipinos and Philippines. I hope the Korean media will notice you being a very talented and articulate and wonderful person.

This is one of the places I loved when I visited Korea few years ago. I took myself out on a date and spent at least 5 hours inside... to the point that a security asked me if I lost my group(there were students who came on a field trip that same day as I did) and had to explain in broken Korean that I'm not part of any group. LOL I remember tearing up while passing by the Memorial Hall because, like what you and Sylvia said, can't imagine living during the war. Couldn't even imagine being a mother during the time and just praying every single day that your child will come back home after serving. Oh gosh, I had to hold it in when I specifically went to the exhibition room where there's a drop of water in the middle and every drop has the name of the soldier who passed away during the war. I wish you showed the uniforms of the females who served in the military, as well. I thought that was pretty cool! Can't wait to go back to Korea and visit this again! PS. I don't know if they still do it but when I went, they're actually giving out a free book about the Korean War.

Filipino soldiers are actually the one who literally risked their lives for South Korea. 3 countries (Colombia, Philippines and Turkey if i'm not mistaken) are guarding a certain mountain (Yultong), Puerto Rico and Turkey was alreadt defeated and among the 3, Philippines was in the middle so when the 2 country fell, Filipino Soldiers were surrounded, literally surrounded, their front, left and right are all occupied by the opponent. Soldiers actually suggested to retreat but a Filipino general told them not to, so even the cooks of the soldier was forced to fight and they actually won. It was a small fight in the Korean History but it actually helped Korean focus on their own fight. And if my estimation is correct, the ratio of Filo Soldier to Chinese soldier that time was 1 : 4,000 (meaning 1 filo needs to defeat 4000 chinede

When you mentioned about how people are interested in korea but not more interested about the korean history, as a kpop and kdrama fan I didn't even realize how I started to like korean war movies or based-on-true-story movies about how korean life and how they lived back then. I as an indie film and historical movies enthusiast, it is always a yes to learn and to appreciate the history of everything.

Many Filipinos have forgotten the Battle of Manila where the city was completely devastated by gunshots where you can still see some of the structures with bullet holes to the massive bombing of Manila to the mass murder did by the Japanese and it was estimated that 100,000 to 500,000 people perished in that battle alone which only lasted 28 days.

After seeing how modern Koreans perceive Filipinos today around social media, I felt hate and confusion until I learned from one of the comments that Philippines helped in the Korean war. Upon learning that I didn't feel a sense of "gotcha" moment, I just felt pride and understood that today not many people (including me) are educated about the past. I no longer hold hate for the Koreans who blindly "bully" us, instead I feel love appreciation for those who remember the courage of their countrymen and our countrymen along with many others who helped protect the core of any country. The people. On behalf of humanity, human lives and the Filipino heart, thank you for this video and thank you to you beautiful ladies for your respect and the love for your country!

When you mentioned Douglas McArthur being a controversial hero, there are some sentiments among historians that the total destruction of Manila could have been avoided if not for the big ego of Douglas McArthur. Who am I to judge the actions of people back then, it was a different time. Manila then was called the "Pearl of the Orient" pre-war, to "Stalingrad of Asia" post WW2 with the city in rubbles ...we lost hundreds of thousands of lives and 300 years of civilization.
@nightvisiongoggles
@nightvisiongoggles 3 года назад
Buildings can be rebuilt, history can be recovered, but one life lost can never be brought back. To be fair, postwar Manila was still as beautiful in the 50s and 60s as before WWII, and the Philippines was a wealthy and independent nation. During those two decades we proved that we can stand on our own and govern ourselves well. Manila and the Philippines deteriorated in the 70s for obvious reasons.

Honestly, the battle of Manila would had been avoided if the Japanese Naval commander Adm. Iwabuchi obeyed the orders of General Yamashita and not defend Manila. Once the Japanese Admiral decided to defend Manila to the last, he absolutely guaranteed that the city and its inhabitants will pay the price regardless of what Mac would do. It was Iwabuchi's ego and fanaticism that destroyed Manila. Remember, if MacArthur bypass Manila and pursued Yamashita, the massacre of the UST internees including the angel nurses of Bataan and Corregidor was very much a possibility. Worse, since the Japanese did not care much about the Filipinos, what guarantees did these historians know that Adm. Sanji Iwabuchi ,who had a grudge and wanted redemption, will act rationally if Macarthur bypass Manila?

@ A) Look at the fucking map and guess why Japan invaded the Philippines in the first place and why China wants our country today. If you control the Philippines, one can easily control the South China Sea especially if China takes Taiwan as well. B) Roosevelt ordered MacArthur to Australia and we know from history that Dugout Doug after 1942 can be depended on being in or near the frontlines along with the media in Southwestern Pacific Theatre of Operations. C) Was the defense of South Korea against North Korea and China due to Western Imperialism? Don’t think so dude. D) The greatest threat to our country is China and not Western imperialism. Ask the Tibetans, Uighurs and the people of Hong Kong.
@willcruz943
@willcruz943 3 года назад
@ Hate to break this to you, but ask Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea how they view China in their own respective histories. Why the hell do you think that there is a historical strong anti- China and anti-Chinese among South East Asian countries even before the Kano, the Limeys, Ivan, and what ever Western imperialism became vogue. Second, let me guess, they send Christian missionaries in China. Hate to break this to you, but fucking Japan, Great Britain, Kaiser Germany, Italy and Imperial Russia were screwing Imperial China pre- Boxer Rebellion.The United States was just a second rate regional power with a small navy and a very small professional army and an even smaller Marine Corp pre-WWI . The joke at that time around Academic circles was the Europeans already cleaned out the place while the Americans had to buy things in cash in order to place things in their museums . So it was kinda hard for the US to do shit in China at the early stages of the 20th century.

We sent Philippine rice. For a while, I was saddened because there was Korean bashing of Filipinos. But somehow I am happy now because there were those who remembered that there was a time that our country was not the way it is now. God bless those who know how to say thank you.

The Museum was closed that day because it was a holiday... But ROK Armed Forces managed to organized a guided tour for us even it was closed. They said we should not go without seeing both our countries' joint history. When i saw the names of the filipino who where honored by your country for ultimate sacrifice they made for your freedom... I was both honored, and proud and of course sad for their family also. Salamat Jessica iha for this. Also thankful, because until now, there are lots of koreans visiting PH. But as a 10 year plus kdrama fan, I was shocked that there are some koreans having safety issues in PH probably because its shown in the PH news tv. But how can Koreans really think that Philippines is only a dangerous country? When about 7,000 Filipino soldiers were sent to the Korean war as requested by UN Allied Forces. Just learned today March 2023 about Filipino war veterans who fought on Korean war. Japan conquered PH, yet they keep sending lots of help to PH during calamities and all. Though I know South korea also do? But for koreans to think PH is only a dangerous country is not justifiable for Filipino war veterans who fought and died for the koreans during Korean war. Appreciating this video you created. Korean media needs war history news update? Peace!
