Filippo Ganna is going for the hour world record. This is a short video of the engineering behind is bike. There was quite a lot more around the manufacture of this bike but when I went to make it, both the video and the article had been removed.
Everyone expects him to break the record but nobody is sure by quite how much! Guesses below!

@Hambini Thanks for a great an informative video! I think you forgot one possibly important variable: He is riding on a circular track, which means the centripetal force is decelerating the rider every time he is in the turn (twice per lap). Bigham's vs. Ganna's different body masses could mean several watts differences if my logic is not mistaken.
@galenkehler
@galenkehler Год назад
try looking at Ganna from the front. side shots can tell some things about the "Cd", but the front shot tells you more about the "A" he also has some real holes through the middle, whether those are advantage or not is beyond my ability, but the curve they've added to the bars below the elbow suggest that airflow through the middle is important

@cjpshawe

The gaps at the edge of the frame are probably a by product of a slightly tapered fit in the frame and then using ballotini beads to create the bond gap internally. One of the few occations where printing is probably the most appropriate manufacturing process rather than being sold as some fancy new magic process so they can charge all the $$$. Also 56.38km (just beating Boardman's record)

We tried leading edge serrations on axial fans. At normal operating conditions they had less efficiency than a straight leading edge, but at highly turbulent inflow and heavily throttled operating points they worked better because the serrations induce longitudinal vortices that helped postponed flow separations on the blades’ suction side. Maybe they use the serrations on the bike in a similar way by reattaching the flow which could reduce the size of the wake and therefore drag.

The best estimate of Romingers power based on a comprehensive mathematical model was 460w, more than Bigham can manage. This was the highest figure except (possibly) Indurain's record which was probably around 490w due to his height and weight,(1.88m 82kg.) Although Ganna is a similar size to Indurain, the advances since then mean that he requires less power for a similar performance. However, beating Boardman's distance will need more than Keen's estimated of 442w for Chris's ride.

Dan's seat angle is steeper, more tri-like, so his knees aren't rising twd his chest as much. Your side-by-side makes it look like Ganna's position is inefficient both aero and mechanically. Does he look like this in TTs? His knees are almost hitting his elbows too. Seems to be doing alright anyway!
@petegarnett7731
@petegarnett7731 Год назад
The difference in position is mainly due to the height and proportions of the rider. I would say that Ganna's is almost perfect for him providing he can produce the power, which we already know he can do in this position. In hindsight this is proven by the fact that he did not lose his position and fluidity until the last 5 minutes. Almost everyone else hits this point at about 40 minutes in.

Even though I'm happy that fellow Brit, Dan Bingham, holds the record, I'm excited to see what someone of Ganna's class can do. I hope we see a ride for the ages and see something bordering on the unbelievable. It's about time that someone got close to Boardman's ultimate hour record since it has been shown aerodynamically that the superman position really isn't that much different from the better positions today.

@Swampster70
@Swampster70 Год назад
@@LS1conehead Who knows indeed. After Boardman's 4'11" pursuit record and 56km for the hour I guess many thought that was that. Now the pursuit record is sub 4 minutes yet it's strange that the Ultimate hour record set in 96 is still much further than the current record despite riders being more aerodynamic now. Maybe we've figured out how to tap into and train VO2 max and sub 8 minute efforts more than we have >20 minute efforts. Who knows? I surely don't. Ganna is about 5 seconds faster than Bingham in the pursuit, maybe it could be a bit more if you had them race at the same meet - maybe a bit less, no discredit to Dan but that 5 seconds might as well be a lifetime.

3d printing titanium is NOT easy. Alpha-Beta phase transition and the usual thermal distortion you get in any 3d printed metal parts. And those parts are big. One way you have to make it perfect is to simulate the printing job and calculate the residual distortions. Then you compensate the distortions on the nominal geometry. However simulating such things is also NOT easy. Really difficult. Or you work with trial and error where you print more parts and slowly change your process parameters until you find what works. But this approach is extremely expensive. So I guess that because they did not have a huge amount of time to print it, they just allowed for more materials knowing that, no matter what, they could have machines off the not needed bits.

I suspect that the sawtooth in this case is for flow conditioning, directing, without the surface area penalty of having ribs or channels all the way across the tubes. Trying to control the air being churned by the legs... Not an aerodynamicist...

You forgot about the bearings in the pedals. Also his size is a disadvantage for aero it is an advantage for power. I don't know the biological term but for example, roughly you are 1000 times bigger than an insect yet you are 10,000 times the mass. So the aero disadvantage disadvantage of size is not a 1:1 ratio to the advantage of extra muscle power.

The air pressure is less favourable today compared with Bigham not by much though, Ganna has already taken to 57avg for 30 mins preparation and already tested full hour training. 56.7 for Ganna today

@@Addiies Ganna did it in 56.792. I just didn't bother putting extra decimal numbers 😁 Although one might say 56.8 would have been a spot on prediction.

I think you underestimate the rolling friction, I would have thought it would be more like 30W. My guess is 56.6km for Ganna, if he's on good form, putting out close to 500W.

You could well be right. It's 6 bearings and the tyres. At that pressure and on a smooth surface, it was a guess on my part
