A reboot of my 2012 post updated with new HD footage and alternate cast recordings of "Fill The World With Love" from the motion picture "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1969).
This is a tribute to Sherborne School in Sherborne parish, Dorset, England, narrated by Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark. O'Toole and Clark starred in the 1969 version of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" based on the classic James Hilton novel. The book and film immortalized British boarding school life. Founded in 1550, Sherborne was the setting for the fictional Brookfield Academy at which the character Arthur Chipping ("Mr. Chips") served as headmaster in the 1969 film adaptation.
"Fill The World With Love" words and music by Leslie Bricusse. Musical conductor John Williams.

Brings me to tears and I've seen it a dozen times. I'm also a school master at this school.... So I guess I'm biased but it is rather special.

I liked when she said if she had a boy she would want him to go to this sort of school. ^___^

Sherborne School was Bishop David Sheppard's alma mater. I don't know what he thought of using it as Mr Chips' fabled Brookfield School!

Fantastic film, I went to a boarding school and had a teacher like "Mr. Chips" Years after I had left I would visit my "Mr. Chips" and take him out for meals, I cry every time I see the ending of this film.

HIs valedictory speech still makes me cry. Actually more now that I'm an older teacher, than when I first saw the movie as I totally understand what Mr Chips was about.

Thanks for posting this because I absolutely love this movie. Many say the original is best, but for me this one is tops. Whatever corny moments it has are far outnumbered by those that are great. Peter O’toole is so superb and brings the Arthur Chipping character to life in such a definitive way with such expression that there’s many moments where I’m either fascinated, inspired or even chocked up to tears. The part where Petula shines and steals the spotlight on the school stage leaving everyone in awe is just so cool. Their unlikely pairing and romance of love found by chance and then lost by tragedy that takes you from elated highs to rock bottom lows is so endearing. I’ve watched this many times since I first discovered it 30 years ago and still enjoy it now and again.

I wonder if this beautiful movie was an influence on J.K. Rowling to create the Harry Potter books? You can certainly hear John Williams 'Mr. Chips' score in the first three Harry Potter films which he also composed the music for. 😉

Now that you mention it, I do hear a bit of "Chips" in the Harry Potter films. I'd be curious to ask Rowlings if she'd drawn from this or perhaps the original 1939 classic with Robert Donat.

I never did until now but watching this video I saw the train and then came the bunch of boys and I just suddenly thought, "Shades of Platform Nine and Three-Quarters" and thought, this is like Hogwarts only longer ago (and of course Hogwarts would have had students back then too). As far as connecting the two schools and the two stories I think it is most likely a better fit for fanfiction than for canon as I don't think this is really what J.K. Rowling was thinking of. The two schools did really start reminding me of each other though. But in England and Scotland they do have *a lot* of old schools that are in mansions or castles, so she did not necessarily have to be thinking of this particular one. I love love the idea of connecting them though. 💕💖❤💓💗 And Chips when he is 90 would be like Dumbledore, if he had a beard like Dumbledore. Of course at Hogwarts the children are not all boys. The teachers do seem to get fond of the children and probably somewhat regard some of them almost as their own, but the "all boys" part would not apply.
