I also made meals for my father after his wife died. Dad was receiving meals on wheels but hated it. To him they were bland and repetitive so once a fortnight I'd do a cook up for dad and puree his meals for him, but loaded with flavour and they were all meals he liked.

Australia is very big so depends what you want to see and how warm you like it. June to aug is winter, so cooler down south and warmer up north. Western Australia is stunning, as is the east coast. Generally the shoulder seasons are great times to travel (Feb-april) or (oct-nov).
