Film Comparison - Lomochrome TURQUOISE vs. PURPLE vs. METROPOLIS

The film photography community spoke, and Lomography listened by re-releasing their beloved Lomochrome Turquoise film in 35mm, 120, and 110 formats! For the occasion I thought it would be a lot of fun to do a film comparison and see how Lomochrome Turquoise stacks up against Lomochrome Purple and Lomochrome Metropolis!
I loaded up my Mamiya RB67 and three 120 film backs with three rolls of Lomography's medium format film and headed out to various spots in and around the beautiful city of Montreal, Canada. Using a tripod allowed me to capture the exact same scene three times to have the most accurate comparison I could think of.
My preference for shooting Lomochrome Purple has always been on medium format, and so I thought that Lomochrome Turquoise and Lomochrome Metropolis would perform similarly. These films are all variable ISO, so I shot each at ISO 100, 200, and 400 to also see how they compare at different ISO's. Since Lomochrome Turquoise has only recently been released, this isn't meant to be a film review, but rather a fun experiment in how each of these films can fit into your workflow!
I was really pleased with how each of these films rendered their environments, especially Lomochrome Turquoise as this was my first time shooting with it! I've got lots more stashed away in my film fridge, and I already can't wait for spring to hit so that I can get back out there with the Lomochrome lineup!
As always, thanks for watching! And if you'd like to get a closer look at a few of my favourite images from today's video, head on over to my Instagram page @jesshobbsphoto

You're seriously the MVP for this video. These Lomochrome films are what pushed me over the edge to snag a cheap 70s Konica rangefinder. Its so helpful to see a direct comparison between them all.

What a really great comparison video, Thanks for sharing and to be honest the Lomo films looked good in all your compositions and choice of iso.

Thank you so much! I have to admit that I am really pleased at how well all three films performed! I had a few ideas of what would work best for each, and then they went ahead and surprised me anyways! My personal favourites were the last two shot at ISO 400, because I find the colour shifts to be more extreme, which I like. I also love shooting these films on 120 to help reduce the grain, which also allows me to shoot them at ISO 400 comfortably. Thanks for watching! ❤️

I have to second David's comment below. From concept to the realization --- this is simply brilliant. I haven't shot any of these films in a long time --- you've really motivated me to get all three and try some comparisons myself. Thanks so much Jess, I really appreciate your good work!

Thank you so much Terry, I really appreciate that! This video was a long one to figure out and to make it exactly as I saw it, but I'm really proud of how it all turned out! And I already can't wait for spring to get back out there with these three films again! Thanks for watching! ❤️

Thank you so much, Monica, I really appreciate that!! I've always loved Purple, so it was fun getting to try out Turquoise! And I gotta say, Metropolis really surprised me... it might not be the first film I grab for landscapes, but the results were actually quite nice! Thanks for watching! ❤️

Thank you so much! I tried shooting in different scenarios to show what each film's strengths and weaknesses are. Of course, it will always boil down to personal preference, but it was fun hitting up different locations! Thanks for watching!

Great timing shooting these films as you cought the good fall period before it goes the wrong way with the light, colours and available daylight! I shot a roll of metropolis as 400 using my rolleicord III and I like how summer greens look with the film! Have a good new year!

Excellent video. Reminds me of the first video of yours that I watched, where you strapped on three Pentax K1000s to compare three different black and white films. I love the final set of images. They'd make a great triptych on a wall.

I love Lomo Purple and it rarely disappoints, but never got any useful results from Metropolis (or my scan interpretation is wrong) and my Rolleiflex ruined a whole role of Lomo Turquoise. But your video is a great reminder how wonderfully creative these film stocks are. Thank you for this comparison.

Great video, nice images and fun to see the comparison of these specialty films that I don't use. I recognize most of the places around Montreal you were shooting, but if I may ask, where is the metal sculpture at 2:05? I find that the main movement I use with my large format 4x5, at least around the city, is the front rise, allowing me to control vertical perspective errors from pointing my 6x7 Bronica up to get buildings or other tall subjects with straight lines. You'll love it! Best wishes for a good holiday season.

great to see the comparisons! Would be nice to see what the naural colours are too.. at least even in video ... to gage what colour the trees are, or the sky etc. But great concept, wish more film TY vids were like this. Thanks!!

one interesting observation, the first shots of the Turquoise and purple shots exibit a phenominon, the people in the shot are NORMAL black and white, the SHRUBBERY is what is 'metamorphasised' into the retro colouring! is this what normally occurs with these films?, aka it only works on reds & greens in the image?

I think I like turquoise the best. I especially like the sepia skies. I used to photograph Chicago in my younger days using Panatomic -X (I am dating myself here). I would then sepia tone the prints. I encourage you to explore Montreal a bit more. You may have a different perspective on it now that you have been living in the country for awhile. Try your hand at photographing people in an urban setting. Good shooting.

love the metropolis !, it gives a look almost as vintage as a LF glass plate (Wet plate colloiden) image, also with a little selinium or gold toneing affect as well. nice shots. I am into archatecture and technology/transport, and this film would do wonders at this subject matter. the other films are great too, but a little retro '70's for my taste.

I find these off color films a waste of time. I know that others like these inaccurate colors because the real world colors bore them. But I still loved your video because as always it shows joy in photography. That rather that content or film color always makes your videos so enjoyable. Also if folks find fun and enjoyment in their photography using such films that is super also!!! Great video
@jnrickards
@jnrickards Год назад
I agree about the funky colors, not something that fits my liking but Metropolis appears to be reasonably consistent to reality with a bit of stylist deviation, that might be something for me.

I've always thought of these films as rather gimmicky but Seeing what you did here has me rethinking that. I like the look of Metropolis the best. You said they are ISO fluid and if I understood you you can shoot the same roll at different ISO's? If that is the case what do you tell the processor or do they have a standard they develop it at regardless of the ISO used
@MichaelZieschang
@MichaelZieschang Год назад
You develop it as you would usually do a C41 film. It's that easy.

Redscale isn't technically in the Lomochrome lineup, although the brand new 92 emulsion is. But I have no plans to remake this video any time soon, although I might do a video on just Redscale at some point, who knows!

La LomoChrome Turquoise baigne les clichés de tons chatoyants. Elle transforme les couleurs chaudes en nuances bleutées, les verts en tons émeraudes. Superbe !
