It's a shame the "director's cut" has one of the best lines in the series removed. When Good Ash shoots Bad Ash, instead of saying "I ain't that good," he says "Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun." SO much better than the "real" line. Evil Dead II is my favorite in the series, but Army of Darkness is the one that I enjoy the most.

Apparently, Internet Movie Firearms Database claims that Ash described his boomstick as the wrong type of shotgun, which makes that particular scene even more hilarious.

+Cyborcat the remake.. If you compare it to the original. It's.. Meh, no harm no foul. But if you see it going blind. Like I took this one girl to.. It actually does hit pretty well. Especially the hero at the end! 😊

Ash vs Evil Dead is awesome, but the retconning is now a part of all the sequels, so you have something to look forward to :)

Bit of trivia for Doctor Who fans, the guy playing Arthur appeared in the story Battlefield, where ironically he played one of King Arthur's knights.

The continuity in the show is interesting. They tried to blend the first two movies together (complete with bits of footage for brief flashback glimpses), BUT they apparently didn't have the rights to reference Army of Darkness, because they couldn't make a deal with Universal. So they don't mention anything about him traveling through time... even though he traveled through time at the end of 2.

Are you watching a different cut of the movie? Because the version I used yo seeing has him saying "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun" at 11:35

Fantastic Job! Your have done me a great service and provided me with a type of entertainment I cannot get any where else! But I have to point out...the line isn't : "I'm not that good" It's actually: "Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."

Excellent review. I seen the TV series and loved every minute of it, hoping for your reviews once you seen it. Of all the magic and demons the only thing that I thought was far fetched was how many rounds he got off without reloading in the final scene. My theory was he got back to boring clerk so it was just a fantasy daydream of his.

Them having gunpowder in the Middle Ages isn't actually too far-fetched. A recipe for gunpowder appeared in the Middle East in a treatise by Hasan al-Rammah in 1280 A.D. , and in Europe proper with another recipe appearing in Opus Majus by Roger Bacon in 1267, and that work would be reasonably widely known in Europe because the manuscript was actually written as a vast collection of works on natural science at the request of Pope Clement IV. I just thought I'd mention that, also, I really wish they kept the old title for this movie "Evil Dead III : The Med-Evil Dead" .

Good video, as always. However, there were some little tidbits of interest you missed out on. The new Linda in the opening montage/recap was none other than Bridget Fonda, who was apparently a huge Evil Dead fan and basically kept suggesting to Sam, Bruce & Co that they should work together sometime on the next one if it ever happened. Also, the haggish deadite that echoes Cheryl from the first film was played by actress/stuntwoman Patricia Tallman, who is particularly known for her portrayal of Barbara in the 1990 remake of Night Of The Living Dead. Even Bill Moseley has a cameo but it's mostly just a "look away for a moment & you'll miss him" bit, and even if you're aware of his presence, it's still hard to spot him because he's so buried in prosthetics & make-up, and he uses a thick english accent that disguises his own unique timber of voice. I will also confirm that Sam is a huge Three Stooges fan, since Bruce & himself have gone on record about that quite a few times. I would agree that in the Director's Cut, the slapstick goes on for too long in many areas, but I think they got almost the right balance in the theatrical cut (though they made it too short of a film). This is one of those cases where I have done my own recut of the film and am content with it, feeling I found the right balance on all that without making the film feel too short. I will commend you on your stance on the remake. Even though my particular opinion of it is in the minority, you & myself seem to have fairly similar tastes, and based on that, I do think you would not like the remake either. It's one of those films that I curse I ever gave a chance to because sitting through it in a theater was probably one of those insufferable experiences I ever had, and it's not because of blind love for the original trilogy either. When I watch a remake, I generally tend to watch it as its own standalone attempt, and even as such, I hated this movie and found it a lame modern horror film. Also, don't buy into the claims that it is actually a sequel rather than a remake because it follows NONE of the established continuity of the series at all, and the only loosely based thing that even remotely implies sequel is the shoehorned in cameo of Bruce Campbell after the end credits. Anyway, that's all I have to say. Thanks for covering this series, Dena. Glad that you finally got to experience & enjoy it. :)

+Flowtac Entertainment Holy shit, I thought Ash's girlfriend looked familiar, and I remember checking the names of the three versions of Linda just to double-check that it was indeed different women and I wasn't just being stupid =P But it still didn't click for some reason. Maybe I only checked with the first two because it was easier to tell with the third. But yah, now that you point it out, I definitely recognize her from Single White Female.

My Dad and I always viewed Army of Darkness as fanfiction. Ash changes a lot, the retconning, famous scenes from the source material, even a Mary Sue love interest. Not bad though, it's pretty funny and the puppet work is good.
@KoiPuff
@KoiPuff 8 лет назад
+Talisguy His love interest in this movie is a smart, strong, independent, woman who charms Ash with little effort (slaps=true love?), she becomes possessed just like his girlfriend but unlike GF 1.0 she gets to stay alive. Sounds like the kinda Mary Sue insert 13 year old girls write into their fanfiction to me.
@Cyborcat
@Cyborcat 8 лет назад
+OnigiriPuff Ash just thought she was hot, and developed some feelings for her after they had sex. And in the end, he left her to go home. I don't see how that's a "true love" scenario.

+OnigiriPuff Keep reducing everything to what some dumbass writes on a trope page...that'll make you enjoy movies less and less because you're too busy looking for the tropes to nitpick the shit out of them. You can destroy any movie doing that nonsense, it adds nothing of value other than giving some a smug sense of superiority for "seeing through it all".

You have to watch Ash vs Evil Dead, it is sooo awesome, and hopefully you can make a video out of the first season. One of my best friends also ratest he trilogy in the same order ;) Even though I wouldn't argue that the second one is the best, I really like the third one most, probably because I just like the tone better. Funny enough though, when you mentioned all the slapstick, it never bothered me - and usually I don't like slapstick and can't stand the three Stooges. I guess Bruce Campell makes everything better ;) Also liked him a lot in "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." saw only a couple of episodes on tv and wasn't diasppointeod when it finally came out on DVD.

I was a huge anti Evil Dead 2013 person. Be it a remake, sequel, or whatever. I've never been proven so very wrong and would say that as far as remake-types of all film genres, it's one of the best. I have to give it to them that there's an actual logical reason for them to be in a cabin in the woods in the middle of BFE. The humor isn't there, but Ash VS The Evil Dead brought that back. Not that they really had much choice with Bruce returning.

That Alt Ending got me thinking. If they wanted to make either evil dead 4 or army of darkness 2 they should make it post apocalyptic and make ash as this Jesus like figure and deliver the world from Deadites once and for all lol. I find it weird that there were ED games and they were canonical with the movies witch is weird but funny as hell.

As someone who generally hates remakes - The one for evil dead is pretty damn good - It's not like an 80s remake where it's something completly different and comendably good like The thing, The blob or The fly....(Huh, never saw that pattern before.) - But it's nothing to be swept under the rug like most modern remakes are - Think of it as an alternate Evil dead 3 where they went for a more extreme horror angle instead of slapstick like in Army of darkness.
@Rubaiin
@Rubaiin 8 лет назад
It's weird. I'm familiar with the alternate ending more but the actual one seems familiar as well. I remember him fighting a deadite in the store but also remember him sleeping too long. Have to find my old VHS and see what's up with that.
@dennett316
@dennett316 8 лет назад
+Snarfle The sleeping too long ending is the original ending, studio interference led to the filming of the happier S-Mart ending. Raimi and Bruce Campbell prefer the downbeat ending, but Raimi also said he's kind of happy there's an alternate universe thing going on...one where Ash gets screwed, the other where he's a "cheesy" hero type.

It's mixed amongst fans it's issue is that it took itself so seriously that it took away what many fans love about it the book had its face taken away making it less iconic looking, the Deadites were more animalistic which is a huge departure from their more fiendish and sadistic personalities the films established and it's confusing trying to place it in the timeline as it can't be the same cabin, the book is too different, Ash's Oldsmobile Delta is outside the cabin despite him keeping it after the events of AoD Darkness and it's just unpleasant I have nothing against it personally but I think it's officially been booted from the franchise unless Mia shows up in season 3 of AvsED
@FionaBell2007
@FionaBell2007 7 лет назад
Mr Critical TBH I saw it as its own movie and it was ridiculous fun with good scares here and there. The bathroom scene was tense. Did it take itself too seriously? to be honest the tone maybe but the story was not serious at all like it was fucking hilarious up to that epic chainsaw climax.I have an extremely morbid sense of humor. Which helps in the medical field(and bad movies) but not in social aspect I guess. Also as a special effect lover I adored this movies effects. The movie has faults (glaring, pulsating and veiny faults) don't get me wrong it can't live to the glorious insanity that is the original and it's sequels but it was a fun ride and I'll take it again anytime. The book being less iconic is a bit of a nitpick but I see what you mean. Tho I would love to have the new book because some of the drawings are hauntingly beautiful. Anyway thanks for sharing your thoughts

+NowherePhotp Thing is, there's plenty of good remakes out there - Ocean's 11, The Fly, The Blob, Night of the Living Dead 1990, Dawn of the Dead, Scarface etc. Dismissing all remakes out of hand is foolish.

@Cyborcat 8 лет назад

+Cyborcat The Departed, True Grit, The Ring, Friday the 13th 2009, Evil Dead, Fright Night, The Hills Have Eyes etc. All more recent, and all good to great. Alright, since there are already a bunch of comments about the remake, and I won't try and convince anyone to watch it, but I'll tell you how it is...In my eyes at least. It's one of THE BEST gore films out there! Yes. The effects and the violence are excellent! It's disturbing, disgusting, and over the top all at the same time, and makes the film stand out. HOWEVER!...The characters are not interesting what so ever. It actually has an okay premise, and does try to throw you through a few loops and moments akin to the originals without ripping it off, but overall, no one actually has much of a personality. The lead goes kind of bad ass towards the end, but it isn't enough, and they don't have the charisma of Ash. It's a movie of ups and downs. Some good. Some bad. Overall, I am actually glad I watched it. It's not as cliche a modern horror flick as I expected it to be, and had the characters been better, I could've recommended it without the caveats. As is, it's a good, not great flick.

I got the HD remeastered BluRay at home and it wasn't a good choice. They put in extended szenes and only the alternate ending and that isn't as good. Furthermore they got rid of a lot of the gritty old video noise and thus it looses a lot of cornyness and comes off even cheaper than it actually is. Overall, great movie though.

Hi! So, I'm thinking of replacing my laptop for a desktop cuz it needs a lot of maintenance at the moment. Do you think desktops are more reliable, personally?
@Cyborcat
@Cyborcat 8 лет назад
That's kind of a random question, but ... I've mainly used PC's for the most part. I've only ever owned a couple of laptops and don't currently have one. Lately I just use my phone when I'm away from home and want to go online. Anyway, It would probably depend on what you planned on using it for. I'm not really up on the subject.

Kind of amazed no one in the movie made an actual "Boner" joke. You'd figure that would have been thrown in somewhere.

Never actually saw the first 2 and generally don't plan to as I'm not a Horror fan. However the added comedy in this one made me love it. (Yes I own 2 or 3 different DVD releases.) Most horror movies I have seen always seem cliche or the actors are just being idiots. Or watching someone get killed gruesomely cause "the bad guy is evil yo" just isn't enjoyable to me. Final Destination and Saw movies probably the most face palming unwatchable to me.

I think you'll really enjoy it, its much closer to Evil Dead 2 in how everything is done. Though imo the time limit hurts it at times, as a few episodes end up feeling like a lot more could have been done with them.

Gotta say, much as I like your reviews, most of the time you always have more behind-the-scenes anecdotes, which I found were kinda lacking with these videos

+A. David A. Thanks for being honest without being rude about it. Yah, I have to admit, these were a bit of an experiment that I'm not totally happy with. I'm thinking of doing a follow-up video in the future to make up for it.

Anytime! And that sounds cool, I'm really big fan of your work, so it's great to actually talk to you :) Also, if you wanna learn more about Bruce Campbell (and the Evil Dead series in general) you really need to read "If Chins Could Kill". Seriously, that book's awesome, and it's the only one I've ever read three times.

I didnt care for the remake, but since you're not gonna watch it, I wont feel bad in telling you it puts its own spin of what the first movie did with the false protagonist, but in the remake, its the chick who gets possessed who ends up being the hero.

That's true, I suppose they could have built off of that and had him find other people--something similar to AoD except in the future, if they were so inclined. I'm just not a fan of "Ash is the last human left alive because he's an asshole so haha".

Yeah, I spent the entire time watching Evil Dead 2013 completely pissed off at it, so you are better off giving it a skip, alright. The series on the other hand, while not perfect, definitely has some really good scenes. I feel that it's a lot better than Army of Darkness, anyway.
@FukcYuo-cy5yg

+H&F what a mixed message its better then army but skip it? It may not have had ash but Jane Levy was amazing, and i enjoyed trading alot of the humor for more gore and ratcheting up the level of Lovecraft. so tell the truth you like this movie :-)
@HFOfficial

No, the TV series is better than Army. Skip the 2013 movie, watch the 2016 series. No mixed messages here.

you know I've never being able to find a video or dvd with the ending were Ash goes back to his time and not the ruined world, I think that's an Australian thing. though it amuse's me that in the comics both endings are true and cannon... yar you think super hero contuinity makes no sence some times they got nothing on Army of darkness. their was even Army of darkness Ash saves Obama... were Ash never actuality meats Obama. it was more of a parody of the wave of Obama theamed comic books that were a thing for a while. And Ash is summons a hoard of super Obama's to fight a deadite army.

oh it gets better, the deadites coped pages of the evil book and put them in comics, to get this I sware im not jokeing. so When Obama went out one day to a comic store to by himself and his kids some comic. he would be possessed by the evil of the book and use those pages to you gessed it take over the world ("of Couse") bur Obama was such a good gut he just refessed to become evil and tossed the comics in his fire place.... I can not make that kind of stuff up.

it makes me sad to hear you dismiss something so flip-idly as Evil Dead you missed out all those years never seeing the originals now your just going to pu-pu on the 2013 wtf. TO tell you the truth Evil Dead 2 is my favourite movie ever so when it came to the 2013 E D i went in with the expectation of hating it like the shit that was platinum dunes Freddy and Jason respectively but the 2013 E D is awesome and my second favourite of the serial watch it i think it will make you a fan
